DICE 'very interested' in Battlefield 4 eSports

Developer says it is looking at competitive gaming support for upcoming military shooter; game won't have any co-op.

DICE is "very interested" in eSports support for Battlefield 4, according to studio general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson.

No Caption Provided

"I can say that eSports is an area that we are very interested in," Troedsson told Leutin09 in a new video interview posted on YouTube.

Troedsson did not go into any further detail, as only Battlefield 4's single-player has been revealed that far. Still, he explained that eSports is a growing phenomenon and that it will be no easy task to pull it off in the final product.

"It's not as easy as some game developers like to think; that's it's just that you do A, X, Y, and Z and everything is done. It's actually much bigger than that now," Troedsson said. "There are some people that actually see this as a new phenomenon and that's not true either. It's been around for a long time. It's just recently that it's really starting to take off…"

Troedsson further explained that Battlefield multiplayer has always been "very competitive" and "the heart" of every new installment in the series.

"And that won't change moving forward," he said.

Also during the interview, Troedsson revealed that Battlefield 3's cooperative mode will not return for Battlefield 4. "We don't have co-op in Battlefield 4. We have made that decision. We're focusing everything we have on multiplayer and the single-player," he said.

Battlefield 4 launches this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but not Wii U. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Dice isn't anywhere near talented enough to make a balanced enough game for eSports. Look how often Blizzard, Treyarch etc tweak their eSports titles. Usually once every week or 2. Dice tweaks BF3 once every 4 or 5 months and still haven't gotten it right.

@Whiskey3romeo i'm a recent convert to dice from pretty much only playing cod. bf3 is exceptional fun which cod hasn't been for a long time but in terms of competitive play you might as well play random number gennerater competitively

@Whiskey3romeo DICE is extremely talented for being so small but let me guess you favor activision right. DICE is the one that made a fps franchise big in a time when cod was king (MW). After that BFBC2 came out and changed expectations for multiplayer on consoles remember that.

@chaos-commander @Whiskey3romeo How is DICE small? don't they have nearly 300 employees, count in EASY and you have probably over 400 if I am not mistaken. I wouldn't call that small, and btw, they are an EA studio family, so they have all the resources of EA available to them.

@chaos-commander @Whiskey3romeo I despise CoD and everything it stands for and much prefer the gameplay of Battlefield, but from a pure quality standpoint CoD is a far better game. It's not even close. BF3 has extremely clunky controls, horrible weapon design and balance, uninspired maps, etc etc.

Yeah, bloody horrible BF weapons and small stupid maps... 20th century visuals... and all those pesky vehicles... who needs them anyway? ;)

@-Geo @Whiskey3romeo BO2 is a good esport game. You just have to limit whats allowed and not allowed in a match. Far better than BF is as an esport so far.

e-sports is not a stepping stone for more milkage EA. Maybe if you don't introduce pay to win (rented server, godlike badmins) people might actually be interested in competitive play

@beuneus12 battlefield is pay to win? I suppose it is if you look at it like "yes i just bought battlefield! I win." As far as rented servers go I'm going to assume you're a console kiddie. Games are initially better with dedicated servers and I could be wrong here but I'm pretty sure badmins are not EA's fault. lol

@MoreThot @beuneus12 yes i'm ps3. i'm all for the benefits of rented servers such as mix your own maps and ticketnumber.

However if your server is RANKED, admins should not be able to switch people around to unbalance teams. Kick/ban whoever is in 'their' chopper. And boost how much they like with no consequence. That is pay to win

@nikon133 @beuneus12 @MoreThot I agree I only recently moved on from COD to BF and while I enjoy playing BF3 a lot more and feels a lot fresher, I wouldn't mind playing a game that lasts a decent length of time, alot of the servers are setup for marathon long matches it gets pretty tiring quick and I can see why it's off putting to the average gamer.

@beuneus12 @MoreThot I agree with you. Lack of official servers is killing BF3 for me, slowly but surely. I've been complaining bitterly about that across different forums. People who rent servers should have right to do whatever they want on "their" servers, but we (gamers) should have right to play game we paid for as it was originally created and advertised, without being forced to endure extreme long games, silly limitations and other "owners'" arbitrarinesses.

Everyone would love to make an eSports game that a lot of people play, but if you can't do something interesting and bring on a lot of mainstream/casual gamers you won't be able to accomplish it. Besides, a lot of BF players are very toxic.

DICE: I am begging you, please please please make 2143 and make it a PC exclusive with titan mode! Please Dice, I love you guys so much as gaming developers and outside of Valve you are some of the last true great gaming developers out there but if you want to keep your core fans through all this craziness. Just focus very much on BC3 and very much on 2143. those are what will make you the top dog without any question asked(already are imo, I am honestly probably the biggest BF fan boy ever. Just take a look at my veteran status) but with all these modern shooters and the genre fatigue. This is something you must do!!! Creativity and thinking outside of the box is not what makes the numbers for EA, but it’s what keeps your core fans loyal, like me. And I have been loyal allthe way through bf3 and will be with bf4, but take what works and continue updating the frostbite engine and no one will be able to touch you. Also keep your PC players privileged, and your core crowd privileged.Don’t let EA push you around because you will be fine without them.

@djpetitte Sorry but if you check the units sold, the console versions sold overwhelmingly more than the PC version, which means more money to develop better BF games, so bear with it until consoles can aptly output large scale battles of 32 man teams(although for me that's way too many per team). Now talking about playing favorites, you must be nuts if you want to see BF die then DICE can go that route, the instant it starts selling in the low millions it will be toast, remember EA owns BF. What's wrong with modern shooters? I see no issue with them, in fact they are so fun that no other type of shooter ever reached such widespread acceptance. Just enjoy having shooters to play, just know that that favoritism thing you want isn't going to happen, stakes are too high and the console market overshadows the PC market with BF3 hitting 25m in sales the PC version which is the version to get has about 3 million in sales, followed by PS3 at 6 m then the 360 with the lions share...why would EA give PC some sort of favoritism?

That's the whole problem it's driven by numbers. I don't care about units sold. If I cared about that I would think Cod games are good. You lost me when you said what's wrong with the modern shooters.. can we say Cod and how its ruining games from RE to BF. I could give two shits if the games I like were widespread accepted.. by parents who buy their 13 year olds a new cod every Christmas.. and I don't recall saying anything about BF dying unless you mean by Dice leaving Ea and calling it something else. I don't think Dice would completely Die. ever. Ea definitely wouldn't favor gamers, but Dice would.

that makes sense, although I wish it wasn't that way. As for as single player goes in a battlefield game. they had a pole recently asking what people most look forward to in bf4 and 12% said single player meanwhile 88% said multiplayer. The poll have hundreds of thousands of votes. just a side note there. lol

@djpetitte @SavageEvil That's the thing, in order to continue paying their bills these guys need money, they have families to support too. I said if BF starts selling too low, EA will kill the franchise simple as that. BF is a big franchise for EA so they will pull out all the stops for it.

It's not about what you like, it's about what sells. We are in a day an age where developers have little say in big name franchises, you always have to answer to someone much higher and writing your checks. BF is in no way for the CoD crowd, the game is geared to team play as one man armies get killed fast in BF. There are drawbacks to each role in BF, meaning you have to rely on squad mates, but there are weapons that let the roles play a bit more closer in output.

@MoreThot DICE can leave EA, but BF will stay with EA, it is their IP. DICE doesn't make the call on what is exclusive, EA does. Battlefield started out on PC, but once it landed on consoles it took off and sales on consoles dwarf those of PC. PC gamers helped give DICE feedback but honestly, us gamers have little to do with making what any game is, developers just use what they thinks might make sense and fun and apply it, you figure it out when it play it and if you like great if you don't sucks to be you. All games are like this, Halo with it's hip fire supreme gameplay is just not my type of game, but a shedload of 360 gamers can't get enough of it though.

BF will continue to go full speed on PC and a bit slower on consoles, I don't see what PC gamers have to complain about, you still get your over the top visuals and gameplay, consoles versions are just lower end versions which are derived from the PC...because DICE realized that their game also needed to have a single player no problem there. Stories drive games and not all people want to play with others competitively, perhaps they wish to play through a game. That is a balance that DICE can handle, BFBC2 was ok in that respect, even with a throwback to WWII within the story, fun times, fun times. All the while having a wicked fun multiplayer.

@fueled-system @djpetitte @SavageEvil If DICE wanted to leave they would, but if you think about it. EA will pay DICE to stick around, because quite frankly if they up and left EA then EA would be the one to suffer big time since DICE would take their game and engine elsewhere and call it something else.

Also the only reason for DICE to make a PC exclusive is because Battlefield started out with PC, those gamers of that day made battlefield what it is today.

If DICE wants BF4 as an eSport, they'll need to somehow grasp the concept of how to balance a multiplayer game.

The patches for BF3 have just made balance issues even worse, since they've catered to aircraft pilots who don't like being shot down. First they nerfed the SOFLAM into oblivion by allowing flares to distract laser-guided missiles, and then they slowed down the missiles so that jets can just outrun them, so it's now pretty much pointless to try using a Stinger or Igla at all.

I guess players who never leave their jets are the most vocal on the Battlefield forums.

Ugh if they are thinking of esports for BF then you can kiss big maps and lots of people goodbye. BF would not work as is because of the map sizes and player count. It would get out of control so all they can do is shrink the maps and players to allow for a more frantic game.

Oh wel, shooters are dead to me anyways, they can do whatever they want to a game I probably won't even play anyways.

They said the same about BF3. Look how that turned out; never even implemented a basic spectator mode even after a year's worth of fans asking for such things. Then again, that pretty much sums them up in terms of listening to feedback.

Lots of complainers coming out of the woodwork for this one. I never understand this thing about weapon balancing, BF3 weapon balance is skewed to make all weapons viable, but realistically some weapons are vastly superior to others there is no two ways about it. DICE has chosen to keep the game a little more playable, seriously anyone with a LMG would murder everyone else, the PKP Pecheneg uses 54mm x 7 shells; dude that would tear a man to shreds in seconds(in the game they give you bad aim and does random high damage if hit in the upper chest area and head). It's a game so they can't have you blowing off limbs as many of the higher powered weapons would actually do.

Now if BF returned to no auto healing like games of old and realistic weapon damage then we would have a more strategic game, but it will be boring for the masses. You have to strike a balance in order to get sales to continue to push the franchise forward. CoD is fast a furious and wholly unrealistic to a point, but it's fun considering how many people play it. BF3 is slower and requires a bit more methodical play but it's still unrealistic but it's fun to play. DICE just have to find the correct balance between fun and realism, although with their talent I think they should really have a no holds barred hardcore mode that really forces thought with gameplay, like Socom back on PS2, one life use it wisely. Also DICE for the love of God, add a freaking practice mode for flight vehicles, it's insane to play multiplayer and the guy flying the chopper needs a few more lesson before he can learn to take off...what is with games these days with no sort of instructions just throw you in and expect you to play with pros who have been doing this for months and years.

My mistake the Pecheneg uses 7.62mm rounds which are the same ammunition used in high powered sniper rifles, which can tear off limbs. I enjoy playing BF3, but there are things that can be done better. Just add a practice mode to learn the nuances of vehicles, who has time to look for empty servers to practice...it should be built into the game. I don't really enjoy fast paced gameplay, I prefer team based objective and squad play, playing roles that work for the team and utilizing your loadouts. Very hard to find online with people who never use mics and just run and gun all day. Not the games' fault at all though. I do have aught with the balancing of weapons, some weapons are definitely nerfed(rpgs/smaw) do very little splash damage, claymores rarely work correctly(no you can't sneak past one that's utter BS) and why in the hell do they always use like a ton of C4...it's incredibly stupid to use that much C4. It's like a giant book and gets thrown as far as one 3ft. One thing which really takes from strategic use of explosives is inability to cook grenades, wtf is that about? These things need to sorted out in BF4, because they really screw up a fight, guys waltzing through rpg fire with little or no damage, no even from the shockwaves...gtfo. There should be slight disorientation similar to stun grenades effect would go well or getting knocked off your feet. Why isn't there a roll while prone that would help Recon when having to quickly move in and out of cover and why are there no realistic attachments for pistols? No laser sight, no silencers, no gun stocks and why do we unlock the same weapon with a silencer that you can't disable. Fix this stupid stuff that makes no sense. I've seen 9mm with suppressors and laser sights attached, why is that not in the game? Pistols are absolutely terrible in BF3, you have to really place your shots well to get kills but this is hampered by lack of any type of gun sight(those nubs on the gun are all but useless). What's worse is the scopes, why on earth do we need to have all those scopes, aren't they all variable zoom? Why can't I use a 7x scope and zoom out back to 3.4x? Why is it common sense things somehow don't apply in games, come on quit with the extra parts that just add more clutter because a few can do the job of many on the fly.

@SavageEvil 1. Hardcore in bf3 has no auto healing and less health for more realism. 2. Squad rush and deathmatch modes are very fast paced and would be perfect for esports. 3. You can practice piloting skills with a buddy in an empty server or to a lesser extent in the co-op of bf3. The game is not perfect but you cannot please everyone in such a huge online game where everyone complains about OP weapons to a point where everything becomes the same gun with different recoil directions but it is still leagues ahead of Call of Duty in my opinion

YEAH FUCKING RIGHT!!! Dream on, DICE. You need to have a balanced and bug-free game, running at a decent framerate. Maybe in 3 generations? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Co op in Bf3 was terrible as it had pretty much no battlefield feel to it what so ever just like the worst campaign the battlefield series ever had which was also in battlefield 3.

If EA and Dice wanted Bf4 to be a success then here is a list of improvements

* Bring Onslaught mode back as this is what the co op should have been.

* More destruction.

* Better maps that actually makes battlefield what it is in other words big maps in various settings.

* More teamwork integration like in Bad company 2 as Bf3 had little to no teamwork well it kind of did but alot of players treated Bf3 like call of duty.

* For console versions make maps that will actually be fun on consoles as well as pc, I understand about current gen console limitations however I think more can be done to make maps more enjoyable on consoles as Bf3's maps were very stale.

* Bring back commander mode.

* Although this will never happen it would be great if EA and Dice to allow full keyboard and mouse controls to consoles which would almost certainly not happen. :(

If all these things happened then Bf4 will be awesome.

Just get rid of the single player campaign altogether. Let us shoot bots if we want to (and then we can figure out how to fly things offline). All of the focus should be on multiplayer, not some rails single player experience.

Battlefield has taken the Call of Duty route, you can tell how everything released about the fourth installment looks identical to the third, even the fucking box art. This is now how E-Sports are made, this is just EA stirring up some drama.

If they made the game more strategic then I can actually see it being on eSports. However a random shoot everything on sight go straight for the point and take over it by having better aim than the others it's not that appealing for a mass audience. I don't really see Esports but I saw once a match in league of legends and people where getting exited and really hyped up when they made a good strategic play or 2 champions where having a duel and 1 barely beat the other. There's not excitement in just killing someone in BF you have to make the death count and the team play. It would improve the game greatly over all IMHO for people to want to watch it.
