Disney: "It's such a disruptive time in the industry"

Vice president of product development Bill Roper says in 19 years he has never seen such a state of disruption in the business.

Never in the past two decades has the industry been in such disruptive state, according to Disney Interactive vice president of product development Bill Roper.

No Caption Provided

"It's such a disruptive time in the industry right now. You've got mobile just exploding; the Wii U came out last year; you've got Xbox One and PS4 coming out this year," Roper told GameSpot during a recent press event in San Francisco. "In the 19 years I've been doing this, it's easily the most disruptive time, which is saying quite a bit because we've gone through a lot in the past."

Roper further explained that Disney's gaming division has implemented a strategy of "intelligent diversification" to combat this level of advanced disruption. This equates to making "smart bets" on projects that Disney believes will be successful by partnering with the right external studios and internal companies as development sees fit.

Disney Infinity, developed by wholly owned outfit Avalanche Software is one of these projects, along with Fantasia: Music Evovled, from Guitar Hero and Rock Band creators Harmonix.

Even with Disney Infinity and Fantasia: Music Evolved, Disney Interactive is not as embedded in core gaming as it used to be. In recent years, the company closed Propaganda Games and Black Rock Studios, and canceled role-playing game Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned.

Asked if Disney Infinity will be a core component of Disney Interactive's business going forward, Roper said the game doesn't have to be, because the company has other endeavors, like an upcoming Planes tie-in, Fantasia: Music Evolved, and its mobile and social game businesses.

"I don't know if it's the core of the Interactive business," Roper said. "I think the great thing is that we're so diversified with our strategy. It's where a lot of our focus is, obviously not all of our focus. But we do see it as a platform. We designed it to be a platform for all things Disney: past, present, and future. And we want it to be something that continually grows and expands to be even better and more fun."

Roper previously held executive-level positions at Blizzard Entertainment, Cryptic Studios, and Flagship Studios.

Disney Infinity launches next month, while Fantasia: Music Evolved arrives on Xbox 360 and Xbox One sometime in 2014.

I wish Disney would stop with the Cussing and the anti-family business. I trusted Disney for years so my family could enjoy a nice film. Now all I see is violence and sexisms. WTF DISNEY!!!

@ded2me Maybe you didn't know this, but---it's 2013---Disney is just rolling with the times, expanding their market (movies/games), as anyone would expect, naturally. It's not 1960 when Walt was still around.

It's a darn shame Disney doesn't have a Walt around to keep the brand intact.

I wish Disney could just make the next Disney Sing It! game. The last one was near perfect. Also, it won't hurt if they made every Disney Channel based game a turn-based RPG instead of a mediocre platformer. How can they mess an RPG up?

What kills me is still the complaints down below about lucas arts being shut down as if that studio has done anything of note in the last 5 years.

Now as for Disney itself.. I don't really play their games. So perhaps outsourcing would be a good idea. IF you can't make it yourself, hire someone who can.

@ethanm1834 @QTEseven No one is wetting themselves over Battlefront 3 being the hands of EA. They're wetting themselves over what they hope BF3 might be; some people like to be excited, I guess.

We all know it's going to be full of microtransactions, day one Clone Trooper dlc that should have been in the game, etc. The crushing disappointment will be severe come 2015.

@QTEseven @ethanm1834 Yes I got that. Yet in another news story you have people wetting themselves with excitement for Battlefront 3.. Whose publishing that? Oh EA.

Hate when its convenient and love when its convenient.

My thought is make good games and I'll buy, if it sucks I won't. Pretty simple process.

I have to agree with some of the previous comments. Disney, stop allowing games that suck to be made. The quality of Disney moves have been in constant decline too.

Disney used to mean something good, now it's something to avoid.

How about you unscrap POTC: Armada of the Damned? That's about the only Disney game I was ever looking forward to (before the lucasarts buyout).

Stop making bad games then? Disney Universe was the only decent Disney game I played, and even then they screwed up by giving retailer exclusive DLC and NEVER releasing the DLC for sale to get extra money.

As for Brave, it was the worst performing Pixar movie ever made, why do you think the game failed?

Epic Mickey 2 was alright, but the quest system was so terrible I don't want to play through it again. You miss one thing and you have to play through the game all over again.

And as for Harmonix' Fantasia game, PASS. If they left out the crappy pop music and made it only Disney music from their movies, then I would buy it, but no, I hate Bruno Mars and other pop singers, so I'll never buy it.

Same will go for Disney Infinite, since they only using a few Disney characters and the rest is nothing but Pixar's junk. Why should the Incredibles be in it and not Mickey Mouse?.. That doesn't make any sense at all.

It sure is "Disruptive Times". Buying LucasArts and shutting them down didn't help much either. Now who the **** will make Star Wars 1313? EA? **** no.

I agree. It won't matter much the power the next gen consoles will bring. Over the years during this gen, developers kept showing me less interesting stuff i want in a game. It's like they don't have the passion for making them. Not trying to be pessimistic, but I don't think it will get any bettet soon...

They talk about the future of gameing yada yada yada, yet they STILL cant even tell the consumers if Infinity will be released on the XBOX 1 or the PS4. Talk about not helping the future out...

Oh wait.... they want you to buy it twice... once now when it releases in Aug, then again when it comes out for the new platform next year... They know if they come out and say it will be coming to the PS4 and Xbox1, then people may wait on buying the game till then, therefor hurting sales.....

Inflammatory statement used as headline to get people to read a total waste of an article completely unrelated to the headline, THAT'S awesome gaming journalism! I want those three minutes of my life back.

@UdderJuice What exactly is inflammatory about saying it's a disruptive time? New consoles are coming. Mobile games continue to be successful. Digital sales are on the rise. I'd say he's right.

@WilliamChase Well disney is past it's renaissance era. They still have their hands in everything though. I knew they owned the muppets, marvel studios, and pixar, but according to wikipedia they own abc, a and e, and 80% of espn. They also now own star wars. So If you've moved on from all that, well there's a lot of stuff you don't like.

@RedLegZeff @WilliamChase Disney does own a lot of great properties, but Disney Infinity isn't geared to appeal to most of us here. In fact, I think the demographics are younger than anyone allowed be read GS.

Disney as a company has a lot of great properties and are great. Even the games aren't all for kiddies, but Disney Infinity definitely is.
