Does Shadow of Mordor's Crazy Ultra HD Content Pack Make a Real Difference?

See what awaits you if your computer is equipped with a 6 GB graphics card.

No Caption Provided

Gamers with extremely high-end computers can download a special HD content pack for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor that enables the game's Ultra-level textures. But do they actually make a difference?

In the very likely case that you're unable to take advantage of these yourself, Digital Foundry has provided some impressions of what they're like. You can also check out the video below for a comparison of the PS4 and PC (with Ultra textures) versions.

Expectedly, it's very pretty when running the game at Ultra. However, it's not the kind of leap over High that you might be hoping for, particularly because the most-improved areas are hard to notice while playing the game in a normal manner. "For the most part, we found that the high setting--in itself placing a significant video RAM requirement on the user--offers the bulk of the ultra experience," writes Digital Foundry.

The option for these Ultra textures are built into the game, but in order to actually activate them, you need to download a free DLC pack from Steam. Earlier this week, the pack was only obtainable through an unintuitive process.

Installing the HD content is now easy enough, but you'll need a fairly ridiculous rig in order to take advantage of this if you follow the recommended requirements. In addition to a 64-bit processor, you'll need at least 8 GB of RAM and a DirectX 11-compatible video card with at least 6 GB of memory. That is not a misprint. It is, however, what's making me so sad about having spent a ton of money on a 3 GB video card not so long ago.

Digital Foundry spoke with lead designer Bob Roberts about why this option is even being offered, given how few people have the necessary hardware. Roberts said the game's artists built the game's assets at "an outrageously high fidelity" before then optimizing them "to fit onto [PS4/Xbox One], to fit onto PCs at high-end specs."

"Then obviously there's going to be that boundary where our monster development PCs are running it OK--but why not give people the option to crank it up?" Roberts continued. "It makes sense to get it out into the world there--we have it, we built it that way to look as good as possible. You might as well, right?"

According to Digital Foundry, high-end artwork can actually be run on GPUs with less memory, but you'll run into issues without capping the framerate. Fortunately, the game offers a 30fps cap option if running the game at the highest quality possible is your goal, though you'll still want as much GPU memory as possible for a good experience.

For a comparison of the Xbox One, PS4, and PC (running without the Ultra textures) versions, check out our video below.

Guys, i play in this game on 3 24" Dell monitors 5700x1200 Ultra HD resolution and it is amazing. For that i spent $5000 on my PC. Playing games on PC much better than on consoles, but that is much more expensive too.

So, your choice:)

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's only "much more expensive too" if you make it so.... There are people building 'gaming' PCs for around the price of a new-gen console. Personally I think they should have probably spent a few hundred more, but supposedly they are getting by...

Why would developers give a damn about pc? Evil within has been out a cpl of days and it's already on pirate bay! Pc gamers steal from developers and that's why console gets all the best games.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>You can also modify consoles to play copied games as well as downloading them to their HDD to play without a disc. Usually Pc pirated games still have game breaking anti piracy mechanisms hidden within the games data. My favorite is in mirrors edge where at the first building jump, you get slowed down to a snail and can never make that jump causing you to never be able to play it. It's quite hilarious really.

I don't condone piracy but have noticed that a large portion of those who do pirate games will end up buying the game later down the road so that they can add it to their collection, I mean, who does not want a legit copy? Also, I can see a lot of those people being a younger group that just does not have a job for whatever reasons.

I will be honest, I have downloaded no more than 5 games before and ended up buying them anyways whether on sale or full price. I have always preferred to have the game added to my ever expanding steam library of over 200 games. A certain feeling of just owning the game is much more over powering compared to getting the pirated version. I like to have game updates, achievements and knowing that I help support the developers who deserve it the most and etc.

The last time I had gotten a game, I remember has been so long now, but during that time I had put well over $600 into fixing my only car then bought the game the next week once I had more money. Also, in a way, the Developers are not always at a loss as like I said before, if you don't have the money during that time then you would not be buying the game anyways, at least you can play it and recommend it to others who can afford buying the game and eventually buying it your self or having it gifted to you later down the road.

My main view on piracy is this, don't do it unless you know you are willing to buy it once you have the funds. If you are doing it just to get everything for free and never spend a dime, then you should avoid it and forget about the games existence.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I was just thinking too, that if you rent games for $4-$5 and then never buy the game, what is so different? You never paid the developers for renting the game, same with buying it used. I remember when the xbox 360 first came out, I was buying at the very least what seemed to be 2 games a month brand new. I had nearly 65 games about 2-3 years after the xbox 360's release. Then I got to the point I would buy them new and sell them a couple weeks later then getting more than half the money back. I am now down to about 30 of those games still left as they would only make $10 back, so no point in selling them now, lol

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> So, in other words, If you are not someone who is buying games brand new and for full price, then you are practically getting to experience the games without ever handing over your money to the developers, placing you into the category of never helping the developers to being with, which is right there beside the piracy people.

Neither of you sent the developers money, so those people may as well be together.

This is just how I view this topic, so of course your views will be different.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Another thing just came to mind, Pc gamers are nearly limited to buying games digitally now days so the cost of production is greatly reduced and they can sell all the copies possible without it ever costing them that initial production cost. If you buy a Disc copy, you typically have to activate it and can't ever sell that disc since it may as well not exist anymore as it's attached to your profiles.

So here's a Pc gamer, Digital, DRM, can't resale and can't rent.

Console gamers, Many forms of renting, borrowing from friends and the resale of their used games.

I am both a Pc and a console gamer and not looking to defend anyone as I don't take either side, but both has their flaws/negatives.

I own everything from classic consoles to, Ps1, ps2, ps3, Xbox, xbox 360, xbox one, wii etc. Lot's of money has been spent, that's all I see.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Oh and just to add to it even more. Games are made using Pc technology and then downscaled, reduced graphics and resolution just to get them to run on the consoles. It's more difficult trying to reduce settings to get it to work on Console and decide what aspects of the game should be removed for it to work while on Pc you can just go wild.

I know that these are all useless comments and waste of time but it's kinda fun debating these things as I have nothing to do for the next 20 minutes till I have to run my errands and install home equipment soon oh and the fact that this topic is a few months old but what the hell. lmao

Well finally, a justification for my spending an insane amount of money on a new rig about a year and a half ago!

Also, all these articles are making it very hard for me to avoid buying this game.

createcruncher (and the other pc gamers here) are right and the console kids here probably dont remember what console gaming was like 10-15 yrs ago coz they wrere still pooping in their pants and suckling off their mama's teat.

Pc gaming has been held back by the consoles.

Games that were not pitched at consoles were awesome (examples: Crysis 1 and The Witcher 2)

Most 'bigboy' games are made for the 3 main platforms, sony, microsoft and pc\mac.

The benchmark is set by the lowest hardware available (ie the consoles.)

Pc hardware is constantly upgrading and changing, moving forward at a much faster pace, all the time.

Console hardware changes every 5 top 10 years. Looks at the gaps between the xbox360 and the xboxone.

The hardware being used today is what we pc gamers were used to 3 to 5 years ago.

Games don't go onto pc as they do with consoles (ie, GTA 5 and in the past the same with Assassins Creed) as the corps want to sell as many of their new devices, which is the only thing you can play these 'new awesome games on'.

We already have beefy pcs. We dont need your new half cut consoles (joypads are nice though xxxx).

Thanks for the HD textures. Lets make more games aimed at next gen pcs and then cut them down to work for the console kids. The consles will still look awesome but the pcs need to take the next big step forward again.

nb: What happened to all those tech engines we saw previews of but the games never appeared?

Devs just don't care about pc, to many pirates to many hackers and to many nerds that don't even play the games they just pirate them hack them and ruin them for genuine players then move on to another game. Then there's the geaks that just like to play with settings and fps and resolution blah blah but don't actually play the game! Real gamers play on console and they play the games how there meant to be played and let's remember they are just games spending hundreds more on a pc for a few extra pixels and fps is just crazy. The games look amazing on ps4 and even X1 in most cases and consoles just have more better games and exclusive games if you love gaming get a console if you love messing with specs and fiddling with settings like a no girlfriend pencil **** get a pc and if your **** is really tiny spend thousands on it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> All I see from Ima flyguy, is hateful comments thrown around. He believes that if you are not spending money on consoles then you are nothing, if you spend too much, you are nothing, If you are him, you are the coolest person in existence. Anything and everything he does is correct. He just want's to find reasons to contend with others and show that he is superior. Not sure what owning a pc or anything else has to do with penis size or whether or not you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, but he likes to think that those things have some correlation with each other.

As I see it, gaming is gaming. If you play video games in general, then you can label your self a geek, a nerd, etc, what ever you want to be labeled as, So essentially he does not think he belongs in any of those labels, maybe labels like, Douchebag, asshole, jerk, bastard, troll, and so on are labels best suited to describing this type of person.

Just get your game on, have fun with your friends whether it's Pc or console. I enjoy them both but after having a good pc, it does make you frown upon the consoles that you bought as they don't perform the way you automatically expect them to, but oh well.

Enjoy life and the things that you have while you have them.

Some scenes it's not so obvious, while others is blindingly so. If you can't see the difference in the youtube video at 1:05 to 1:38 then take that blindfold off.

anything above 2k is pointless you cant see pixels past this point so you will not noticed the smudges left between 2 texture pixels...so unless your gaming in 4k you wont notice much with ultra ...and this video is horrible i hate this at this point these video cant show anything for real since there both shitty encoding shitty conversion not in 4k and bla bla bla could go on forever...only way you can see the diffrence is with your own eyes on something 4k...in 120fps...

I'm glad to see Digital Foundry releasing this even if I can't run it. It means more people will have an excuse to upgrade, more sales and eventually lower prices for the current generation high-end cards. In a couple of years most everyone will have 6 Gb of RAM on their cards and complaining they don't have 12. That's the way it worked in the days before consoles slowed pc gaming tech requirements down to a crawl.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, because the only reason cards aren't cheaper is because not enough people are buying them. Wouldn't have anything to do with production costs, right? I mean, if consoles just disappeared, surely everyone would go out an drop $1000 on a video card. Your assertion completely ignores basic supply and demand economics. People buy consoles because they're ok with getting good graphics for $400 as opposed to top end graphics for a lot more money. Looking at this video I can see why, the "Ultra" version isn't THAT much better than the PS4, certainly not good enough to warrant paying 3 or 4 times as much for the experience. If that's what you like, cool, but don't act like it's consoles holding back PC gaming. People game on consoles over bleeding edge PC hardware for the same reason they drive Camry's instead of Porsche's.

So any difference in HD seen on the videos isn't a true representation. If not for price fixing development would be much more advanced and things in development waiting for a sales quarter would have come out and be half the price they'll start at and still give all business entities a 200-250% profit. Consoles would be upgradeable and PCs would be far far better than consoles compared to now. Profit is all they care about, and turning in good quarterly reports.
Everything should be cheaper and the gap in graphics should be beyond a sharper image. They need competition to drive a fan base and keep the pricing competitive.. Sales, supply and demand, they are meaningless when the parts and industry has a common goal of going slow for profit.

The 6GB requirement for the Ultra HD textures is a serious overkill. I am currently running the game with the Ultra HD Textures everything on Ultra at 1080P and I have no sluttering or preformance issues. I am running it on Geforce GTX770 4GB. I have played the game for 3 hrs yesterday and my used GPU memory was between 95%-96%. So if you have a 4GB GPU you should be able to run it just fine.

Awesome article, thanks!!!!! I have been playing this game set on high at 1080p and wondered how much of an improvement the HD textures were that I'm not using. Often the first thing that modders do with an aging game is do HD textures, like Skyrim, and Fallout, and here the devs did it already, which is amazing.
