Doom Review in Progress

Oh, to be dead again.

Shooters have certainly changed since Doom 3 landed on Xbox and PC over a decade ago, so it comes as a relief to discover that the new Doom embodies the spirit that I loved about its predecessors. Sure, it's laced with modern touches--Glory Kills get a lot of attention--but after a handful of hours with the campaign, the core experience is thus far familiar-feeling in the ways that truly matter. The demons are tough, the guns are fantastic, and the atmosphere is gnarly. So far, so good. Without early access to Doom, I haven't been able to play enough to write a full review yet. Like anyone picking it up at launch, I will be knee-deep in virtual blood and ammo casings over the weekend, prepping for my full review early next week.

I can tell you this, however: after almost six hours in the campaign, I do not want to stop playing Doom. It's rare that I get to play a game where I don't feel--at least occasionally--confronted by convoluted dialogue or overwrought systems; even the best games are guilty of this from time to time. Doom's straightforward identity and focus on gunplay and haunting environments is a breath of pleasingly rotten air. I'm revelling in the challenge of combat as new demons are introduced to match my rapidly expanding roster of weapons. With collectible modifications that add the likes of missiles to my heavy assault rifle, or homing capabilities to my rocket launcher, there are 27 weapon variations to tinker with. I've got access to 13 thus far, and it's a good sign that I have a hard time choosing my favorite loadout.

Melee is an integral part of combat thanks to the presence of Glory Kills. These contextual attacks show you violently dismembering enemies. But it's for more than sheer spectacle. To activate a Glory Kill, you have to attack an enemy until they are in a staggered state--enemies glow orange and blue to indicate they are vulnerable. While it's fair to say Glory Kills bring combat to a temporary halt, they are also a godsend as they cause enemies to drop health packs, and occasionally some ammo. I've learned to use Glory Kills to my advantage, either to get out of a hairy situation or to play aggressively, confident in the fact that I can get in close and recuperate some of the inevitable damage I'll endure. Then again, Glory Kills aren't required, and you may choose to ignore the option at your own discretion--you can even disable the visual effect that indicates when an enemy is staggered. I was skeptical of Glory Kills at first, but now I view them as an ace up my sleeve.

Likewise, a chainsaw you acquire early on proves to be an almost equal partner to Glory Kills, albeit with a different balance. Your chainsaw can kill most enemies immediately, and the reward for slicing a demon in twain is a deluge of ammunition. In my experience, predefined ammo caches are far more scarce than health packs, and when the going gets tough, I'm thankful for my chainsaw. Because it relies on fuel--which is even harder to find than typical ammo--it's not as reliable as Glory Kills are, but it offers far more strategic depth due to the way it compensates for the game's slow dole of ammo.

There's no place like hell.
There's no place like hell.

I'm currently playing Doom on PlayStation 4, and will spend a few hours between the Xbox One and PC versions of the game before writing my review. The PlayStation 4 version is fast and fluid, but it's not without some issues. To accommodate what feels like 60 frames per second, it's clear that Doom's textures have been downgraded quite a bit from the PC version. This is par for the course when it comes to cross-platform games, but there's an unusual amount of texture pop-in present in Doom, predominantly right when you boot up the game or enter a new stage. The mental impact of this is somewhat diminished by the strength of the environmental design, but watching objects shift from muddy hues to crisp details temporarily interrupts my immersion in Doom's dark splendor nonetheless.

As much as I wish I was currently playing Doom on PC--both to experience the full extent of the work that went into the game's art and effects and to wield the accuracy of a mouse--the PlayStation 4 version hasn't really let me down. I don't appreciate the texture issues, but they pass quickly enough that I can focus on what matters: shotgunning demons, point-blank. With numerous monstrosities and new weapons on the horizon, I'm ready to keep the train to hell rolling. Come back early next week to see if I make it out with my positivity intact on the other side.

No worries everyone. Mr. Brown will have the review up soon. He probably got sucked into hell by Olivia Pierce, and is busy fighting his way out.

I hope it gets a good score. I'm loving Doom. I can't stop playing it. : )

Just finished it on Hurt Me Plenty - replaying it on Nightmare.

9/10 for me - didn´t touch the multiplayer.

I quite like this style of review. It reminds me of the composer John Cage's famous piece 4'33" which consists of no musical notes and invites the audience to observe 4 and a half minutes of silence.

Peter Brown is advocating a new style of review where the community visits the page but without any words. Well either that or he was actually fired for playing Doom for 20 hours and not turning up for work.

I'll fill in the rather large blank here folks, this game is a solid 8.5 out of 10.

@Namahsdrol: Gamespot left the .5 review scheme a long time ago. So it´s either an 8 or a 9. Solid 9 in my book.

GS takes about three or four days to review Doom. Reviews Stellaris right away.

Makes sense.

I agree did the reviewer get fired too? Maybe he falls asleep every time he attempts to write this review because he finds it boring? One day hopefully we will find out the mystery:)

Doom would be a great game if the balance of weapons in single player was thought out a bit better.. A hand grenade is more powerful than a super weapon (rocket launcher, plasma rifle etc.) Also the checkpoint save system absolutely blows.. you can get armor in a secret area, however if you die with that armor and get reloaded to a checkpoint prior to obtaining the armor it will not respawn. so your so called secret armor becomes a once in a level type deal you will not reload with the armor and it will no longer respawn. if the checkpoint system will remember that you got the secret location why wont it remember that you got the armor?

it seriously needs a manual save system, and the glory kills get dull and old after the first level. ok we get it... you can just Smack crap with a weapon for glory kills... after you do 1000 glory kills its clearly obvious to me that they focused more on the stupid ass glory kills than actual gun play.. Ya know saying how a Shotgun with explosive rounds is more powerful than the actual rocket launcher.. and how the hand grenade is more powerful than the rocket launcher... WTH is the point of the rocket launcher again? Oh ill just melee bash demons for glory kills and don't use anything (totally possible). for some reason the weak weapons feel strong and the strong weapons feel weeeellll.... weak lol.

As far as spawns go the surprise is totally taken away from you once you see armor shards and health packs peppered around everywhere... when you see armor and health you just know a big fight is about to come about (surprise taken away *sad panda* ) and the enemy spawns become 100% predictable... nothing about the enemy locations bring a scare or thrill or anything... its just going from door to door.. you pick up a weapon/item/activate something and POOF mobs appear... now that would be ok if it only happened once in a while.. but EVERY time. and thus far its like this... open a door shit spawns... pick up an item.. shit spawns... see armor and health peppered around shit spawns... its so predictable.

@ALLIAMOS: For me this is a 9/10 and only because the multiplayer is average. However when people complain about this I don't think they are taking into account the multiplayer / co-op possibilities with snapmap which hasn't even got going properly yet.

I think the reviewers absence here says it all, he is far too busy enjoying the game to write up the review!

The review is pretty redundant now as most people have already purchased and its clear from the majority of comments this is an 8/10 (or above) and a recommended purchase. This is the most enjoyable FPS I've played in a few years now and I think this element has been lost on shooters recently .. FUN.

Brilliant game and hope ID and Bethesda do some great numbers here if only so we see future support for snapmap. Forget the gripes about multiplayer, yes its the weakest component but the campaign is so good and snapmap is going to keep the game alive for a long long time. This is easily the best release so far in 2016.

@Namahsdrol: Oh please expand on snapmap. Scaling the size of items, allow us to add exits to room modules by way of doors. Allowing us to create landmasses to build on and terraform.

Best campaign in an fps I've played in a very long time. Great graphics and soundtrack, amazing enemy design, creepy atmosphere, no-nonsense pacing and most importantly, it's just a ton of fun to play through. I will say, however, that the final couple hours of the game started to stretch a little thin, but they were still enjoyable. I already started a 2nd playthrough which is something that usually takes me at least couple weeks to do.

MP is fine and has some interesting ideas, but overall I don't see it having a lot of staying power. You'll probably play 10-15 matches and then have your fill. Snapmap could be cool, but right now the top rated creations are mediocre at best.

Worth buying if you're ok with the fact that you're probably gonna get 20-30 hours out of it. In my mind, this is a quality of quantity scenario since I just had so much damn fun playing this game. I'll take 10 hours of Doom over 40 hours of crappy sidequests and audio logs any day.

@speedfog: Bethesda didn't send them a copy early, so they're playing it alongside everyone else, and then writing, editing, and publishing a review.

I was wondering, does Gamespot have to go out and buy their games these days? It seems they are taking longer and longer to get out reviews for big name games these days.

And let's all be honest, big AA and AAA titles are few and far between at the moment.

@Super_Tramp: In this particular case, I think they were sent a copy but not until the actual release date. And Uncharted had a review up almost a week before launch, so I don't think Gamespot is taking longer to review big games; occasionally they just don't get the games to review until they're out and people are buying them.

playing on the xbox one, cut my teeth on the original doom. this version is better the I expected. the play is furious multiple enemies coming at you. and when you pull the heart of the demon ball look out. I give the SP player campaign 9/10. As with everyone else i'm a little disappointed in the multiplayer, and at a loss why there was on co=op. hopfully they will patch the MP. score for MP 7/10. And I've play unchartered 4 these are two different games so makes no sense to compare one to the other.

There should be separate scores for SP and MP, otherwise the meh MP will drag the overall score down.

@wearelegion5000: Well, that's why people should read the review, and not just look at the number on the bottom. The score is for the whole product (or at least as much of it as is available when it's being reviewed).

Multiplayer is good, but needs tweaks. SP is amazing(Best campaign I played in years), and snapmap is a true hidden gem. I've already played user created maps that were not only challenging, but had great level design with secrets littered everywhere. It's got coop, it's got horde mode, it's got tower defense, It's. Got. Everything!

Game is easily a 9/10 for me. Would be a 10/10 if the regular multiplayer had better weapon and demon balance. It's all over the place.

Love the people saying the single player is better than the uncharted 4 single player, not saying it's bad but it's not GOTY material, please, remember to clean your crack pipes after use, fact is, this game has a dud multiplayer and so id have basically failed, this game will have a short life, even uncharted 3 still has a strong multiplayer community.

@xxdavidxcx87: The multiplayer might not be the greatest, sure. And with most games that might mean a shorter lifespan, but Doom is not most games. The campaign is amazing; ive spent 20 hrs on the game so far on Normal and i still have 3-4 more levels to go. The game is extended considerably if youre searching every nook and cranny of each map. But that wouldnt lengthen the games overall life either. What will is SnapMap. Does UC4 allow you to create your own single/multi/co-op maps? User-generated content will keep this game going for at least another year and a half, if not 2 or 3.

Just finished the game, on ultraviolence.

HOLY SH*T!!!

What a blast.

The single player is fantastic I haven't had this much fun on a first person shooters since Doom 2.

ID software did all the things I ever wanted on a new game.

Fast and fluid moviment, nice weapons, classic monsters, great level designs, lots of referentes to the older games, and absolutelly no retarded slow paced idiotic iam-gonna-scare-you-spawing-imps-behind-you.

Also, lots of monsters at the same time, not one-at-a-time as on DOOM 3.

Fantastic, gameplay, fantastic fights.

Single player gets an easy 8.5 from me.

I just subtratc a few points because obvious no Coop, and somewhat repetitive fights at the end. I guess they could have thrown a few variants of the same enemies with a better AI, much like halo does with diferente types of elites. Actually they did something like that with the maccubus, but we could have the pale hell Baron from doom 2, moving faster or atacking with a different pattern, same for other demons.

Still great game, worth every single Penny I paid on it.

Also, loved the multiplayer, didn't like the region lock.

Also, this game need proper MOD TOOLS, snap map is pathetic!

I'd give the campaign a solid 8. It gets semi repetitive, but even the repetition is fun somehow, and the game is gorgeous. As for the MP... we're talking 6/10. Not the worst MP out there, but no real reason to play it when Battlefield and CoD exist, unless you just really have to have the gore in your life. Even though I'm not on good terms with CoD, it's still better MP.
