Doom Review in Progress

Oh, to be dead again.

Shooters have certainly changed since Doom 3 landed on Xbox and PC over a decade ago, so it comes as a relief to discover that the new Doom embodies the spirit that I loved about its predecessors. Sure, it's laced with modern touches--Glory Kills get a lot of attention--but after a handful of hours with the campaign, the core experience is thus far familiar-feeling in the ways that truly matter. The demons are tough, the guns are fantastic, and the atmosphere is gnarly. So far, so good. Without early access to Doom, I haven't been able to play enough to write a full review yet. Like anyone picking it up at launch, I will be knee-deep in virtual blood and ammo casings over the weekend, prepping for my full review early next week.

I can tell you this, however: after almost six hours in the campaign, I do not want to stop playing Doom. It's rare that I get to play a game where I don't feel--at least occasionally--confronted by convoluted dialogue or overwrought systems; even the best games are guilty of this from time to time. Doom's straightforward identity and focus on gunplay and haunting environments is a breath of pleasingly rotten air. I'm revelling in the challenge of combat as new demons are introduced to match my rapidly expanding roster of weapons. With collectible modifications that add the likes of missiles to my heavy assault rifle, or homing capabilities to my rocket launcher, there are 27 weapon variations to tinker with. I've got access to 13 thus far, and it's a good sign that I have a hard time choosing my favorite loadout.

Melee is an integral part of combat thanks to the presence of Glory Kills. These contextual attacks show you violently dismembering enemies. But it's for more than sheer spectacle. To activate a Glory Kill, you have to attack an enemy until they are in a staggered state--enemies glow orange and blue to indicate they are vulnerable. While it's fair to say Glory Kills bring combat to a temporary halt, they are also a godsend as they cause enemies to drop health packs, and occasionally some ammo. I've learned to use Glory Kills to my advantage, either to get out of a hairy situation or to play aggressively, confident in the fact that I can get in close and recuperate some of the inevitable damage I'll endure. Then again, Glory Kills aren't required, and you may choose to ignore the option at your own discretion--you can even disable the visual effect that indicates when an enemy is staggered. I was skeptical of Glory Kills at first, but now I view them as an ace up my sleeve.

Likewise, a chainsaw you acquire early on proves to be an almost equal partner to Glory Kills, albeit with a different balance. Your chainsaw can kill most enemies immediately, and the reward for slicing a demon in twain is a deluge of ammunition. In my experience, predefined ammo caches are far more scarce than health packs, and when the going gets tough, I'm thankful for my chainsaw. Because it relies on fuel--which is even harder to find than typical ammo--it's not as reliable as Glory Kills are, but it offers far more strategic depth due to the way it compensates for the game's slow dole of ammo.

There's no place like hell.
There's no place like hell.

I'm currently playing Doom on PlayStation 4, and will spend a few hours between the Xbox One and PC versions of the game before writing my review. The PlayStation 4 version is fast and fluid, but it's not without some issues. To accommodate what feels like 60 frames per second, it's clear that Doom's textures have been downgraded quite a bit from the PC version. This is par for the course when it comes to cross-platform games, but there's an unusual amount of texture pop-in present in Doom, predominantly right when you boot up the game or enter a new stage. The mental impact of this is somewhat diminished by the strength of the environmental design, but watching objects shift from muddy hues to crisp details temporarily interrupts my immersion in Doom's dark splendor nonetheless.

As much as I wish I was currently playing Doom on PC--both to experience the full extent of the work that went into the game's art and effects and to wield the accuracy of a mouse--the PlayStation 4 version hasn't really let me down. I don't appreciate the texture issues, but they pass quickly enough that I can focus on what matters: shotgunning demons, point-blank. With numerous monstrosities and new weapons on the horizon, I'm ready to keep the train to hell rolling. Come back early next week to see if I make it out with my positivity intact on the other side.

@Karmazyn: Jeez 1.5 off because it doesn't run Ultra at 60fps on consoles. Please tell us more about how graphics are soooo important to you.

@cejay0813: graphic is importal. fps are far more important though. I must admit console version scales up pretty well in terms of what fps you get for game looks.

@InYourMouf: While it doesn't suffer the same problems as Doom 3 it still suffer new problems of its own which make it far from a "proper" Doom game.

For one example no mod tools beyond a map editor which has limitations compared to the previous games map editors and you can't even make outdoor areas for an example, finishers which take away the challenge by easily killing enemies and restoring your health which are repetitive and will get old with no way of disabling them, no campaign Co-Op which was a staple of the original Doom's, and enemies that randomly appear instead of properly placed enemies for an organized challenge, also the map design is generic and not abstract-like like the original Doom's.

The art direction isn't good particularly for the hell parts, too much yellow everywhere and no traditional red themed hell, and goofy demon designs such as the cyberdemon for one example which looks like a golum with moose antlers.

@J_P-: I'm confused why you need a "way of disabling [glory kills]." You can turn off the indicator highlight and simply not perform the move. Just shoot things if that's what you really want to do.

The bad thing about this game is the multiplayer. So many cheaters online is this game is sad. Glad I only play multiplayer once in awhile.

@thomasn7: The whole thing missed the mark for me, the single player isn't scary or creepy...you never feel lost...just chased. It's starting to look like we'll never get a proper scary-maze-shooter ever again. Play Doom64EX to see what a new(er) Doom should look/feel like.

@tomteksure: Doom 64 was always a pretty shit game. Console users never stop inflating that crap until this day. That game has very poor level design ,thats just stiched together to resemble something like the original games, but without understanding how it actually works, the subtleties. The enemies are lame and pathethic and slow. The encounter design is just thrown together without sense, which makes the games mellow and punny. Weapons feel weak. Its just a shit game all around and god i wish console players would stop mentioning it every time the name Doom comes up

I've already played through the campaign and hours of multiplayer. In the process of playing through campaign again to collect everything and enjoying it just as much. This game is fantastic. 10/10 I haven't been this happy with a game since I was a kid. I don't care about other games at all now. I couldn't care less.

@MaxBlaze: I agree. This game feels like a breath of fresh air for some reason. There's nothing too unique compared to other shooters, but it is just so visceral with its violence and lots of ketchup!

Solid shooter. I would give it an 8.5 easy. The one thing I hated the most was that the story dragged on and on and on and on. It is like you think you are finished at a certain point and you are like "wtf there is more ? " Overall though very pleased.

The game is solid, and optimized. Maxed on PC it looks beautiful.

I recommend it to any fan of Doom, or shooters in general.

It looks as if the level design of the old Dooms are back much more than I expected it to be, which is great. Its just a really fun game.

Plays best on PC, PS4 is weak, Xbox One is weaker.

If you are a fan of Doom, the game is a must. I am having a blast.

@gamer4sp: I'd go with off - but why not try it both ways? I can look alright, but it often makes the edges of things unnecessarily rainbowy which really doesn't work for many game settings

@gamer4sp: I think most of the time it's kind of a weird gimmick, but I think it works in some games (and might in this one). I recall reading people liking it in Alien: Isolation

@xantufrog: Yea, Alien: Isolation it worked pretty good on, one of best I have seen so far. This game it works very well on as well, it also seems to smooth out some of the edges while retaining a natural look to it. They have done a rather nice job with this game.

@wretch1d: Me personally, I like the MP. I've always preferred the arena based shooters like Quake and such. The Super Shotgun is a beast up close and can do anywhere between 45 and 60 (possibly a bit higher) in damage depending on where you hit the opponent. Your best bet is to try and stay as far away as possible when engaging anyone in MP. I wouldn't say it's OP though. At a long distance it's useless.

9/10 - Graphics 8, Game Play 10, Re-Play 10, Multi-player 8....

A game that delivers to it's target audience. So let me define the target audience IMO. You enjoyed games like Quake 3 & Quake IV, Doom 3, Bullet Storm, Serious Sam, Pain Killer, Riddick , Wolfenstein Old Blood, and as someone mentioned earlier to me "Prey". The Halo 4 crowd may think the game is too fast and lacking in MP and the COD fans are probably happy with their version of Zombie shooting.

The Xbox One and PS4 offer limited in choices for people who like the games I mentioned above. Alien was a "semi-shooter" and a really good horror FPS, but different from what Doom offers. Really the Old Blood on X1 was the 1st time I felt like I was kicking it old school FPS. Otherwise I lean on my Xbox 360 to give me more of this kind of feel for shooters.

The game isn't perfect, I thought Doom 3 was "more scary" in it's day & I'd agree co-op would have made it more flexible at $60, but if you are waiting it out $45 will be here soon enough. I'm happy to drop $60 and support the franchise.

@galva86: For me I can keep playing games like this until I'm running through them in just a few hours. So I guess by the fast pace it would never be too time consuming to play it again. Good mindless shooter as designed.

I've played Doom 3, Bullet Storm, Quake 3, & UT 3 repeatedly just for the love the fast game play.

You guys are SLOW with your reviews. I've already beaten the game on ultra-violent, and I've been playing Multiplayer the last 2 days. So I will cut to the chase... 9/10. The Campaign was 12hrs for me. Don't bother reading Gamespot's opinionated review, just know Bethesda nailed Doom on every front and payed homage to the old school Doom games, perfectly.

@wrestlingdude: Unfortunately the late reviews (all over, not just this site) are 100% due to Bethesda not giving out review copies in advance. They literally gave out review codes at midnight the day the game launched.

@wrestlingdude: Digital Foundry has proven both the PS4 and Xbox One version are not locked at a constant 60fps and both have dips. That being said, I played the PS4 version and not only was there some really bad screen tearing (which has since went away with the 1.2 patch) I also had framerate slow down in some battles..mainly when the lighting and smoke were heavy in the scene.

@Henry_The_Red: Yeah the screen tearing is gone. It's funny cause there are times when there's a lot going on on-screen and the framerate holds up and other times when there's not much but the framerate dips.

I understand how all the old school PC peeps who loved the original Doom hated Doom3. For someone like me, in the same age group, I could give a rats ass about multiplayer. 3 is one of my fav games of all time for the creepy atmosphere, great story and tight quarters fighting. I knew what this would be from all the videos provided before release. The campaign is a nod to the multiplayer only. You run around in these large open areas like a chicken with your hair on fire eliminating enemies as you upgrade your suit & weapons. If you remember, the original Doom4 was scraped, they started over and ended up with this. I would be willing to bet, the original concept was to make another game like 3 and the higher ups said FU! We stick with a multiplayer type game which is what the first 2 games were. The only fun in this game is finding the secrets and the little bit of platforming you get to do. I also think the glory kills & chainsaw were implemented well. However, I was bored with the running & gunning about 2 hours into it. Go here, take out a gore nest there, find a key to unlock a door, etc. etc. I will take a slower, better story, longer play thru, tighter, creepier atmosphere all day over this retread arena type multiplayer game. My wanting id to make a more single player experience doesn't detract from what I think of the game as I would still give it an 8/10 for those multiplayer fans. Its beautiful graphically and runs smooth on my X1 albeit those long console load times.
