Double Agent outed for Wii launch

Ubisoft sending Sam Fisher to infiltrate Nintendo's next-gen console; details kept under tight security.

As one of the original members of the Wii bandwagon, French game developer/publisher Ubisoft has plenty invested in Nintendo's forthcoming console. A few months after the Wii's positive reception at this year's E3, Ubisoft announced that it had seven games scheduled for the Wii launch--a healthy number considering that game behemoth Electronic Arts led launch support for the Xbox 360 with five games.

Now it appears that Ubisoft is doing one better for the Wii launch. The company has revealed that a Wii version of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent, which was previously unannounced, will be available for the console's launch sometime this holiday season. The game is being developed at Ubisoft Montreal. Double Agent has also been confirmed for the Xbox 360, PC, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube.

The new espionage thriller is the fourth full console game in the Splinter Cell series and the first next-generation installment in the franchise. In Double Agent, hero Sam Fisher goes undercover and must balance objectives given to him by a terrorist organization and the National Security Administration. The game's storyline and ending will hinge on players' choices as they tackle missions all over the globe.

No specific details about the Wii version were mentioned, but in the past, Ubisoft has offered up exclusive content for each platform's edition of its Tom Clancy games. "The Splinter Cell franchise has always translated very well across multiple platforms, and we are confident that the Wii version will continue the tradition of maximizing the capabilities of each respective video game console platform," said Ubisoft vice president of marketing, Tony Key.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent for the Wii has not yet been rated or priced. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of the game on the Xbox 360.

Anyone interested in attending a Wii Launch-Party in the Boston area? Snacks, DS games, and a good-will effort to make sure everyone gets a system (for playing...not Ebay!). Is there interest in this sort of thing? Gimme a shout-out! Wii is gonna rock!
