E3 06: MIA @ E3 06

Killzone 2, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Dragon Age, Culdcept, Bully, and first-party GameCube and GBA titles all skipped last week's event.

LOS ANGELES--This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo saw many a headline generated by games that had their first trailers unveiled at the event, such as Halo 3 and Call of Duty 3. Others came from titles whose mere existence was revealed, such as Grand Theft Auto IV. Still more came from the hundreds of games that were playable at the Los Angeles Convention Center, such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii, Warhawk for the PlayStation 3, and Too Human for the Xbox 360.

But for all the games that make appearances at E3, a notable number of titles are newsworthy by virtue of not being at the event. Each year sees a series of highly anticipated titles skip the event, and their absences often speak volumes. Here are a few of the major games GameSpot editors were expecting and/or hoping to see at E3 2006--but didn't.

The PlayStation 3 Killzone sequel: In 2005, the trailer for Sony-owned Dutch developer Guerrilla Games was the talk of the show. Its jaw-dropping graphics became the subject of controversy for being too good, causing many to whisper that they were prerendered. Sony steadfastly denied the accusations, and many E3 2005 attendees were confident that by the time the 2006 expo rolled around, subsequent Killzone 2 footage and/or demos would settle the kerfuffle surrounding the game.

Just one problem: There haven't been any. A year has come and gone, and Sony has kept a shroud of secrecy wrapped tight around the Killzone sequel. It wasn't included in Sony's pre-expo press briefing, it wasn't at any of the 62 PS3 demo stations on the E3 show floor, and it wasn't shown behind closed doors to the press. "I couldn't even get the guy from Guerrilla to say the words 'Killzone 2,'" said one editor.

First-party GameCube and Game Boy Advance games: Though a few third-party publishers had games for the console (Over the Hedge at Activision) and the portable (Atlus' lineup), Nintendo didn't have any demo stations for either platform at its massive booth. That meant that titles such as the new Pokémon Dungeon for the GBA, Super Paper Mario, and, yes, even the GameCube version of the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which caused nerd stampedes the year prior, were nowhere to be found.

In their stead, Nintendo decided to show off its DS and Wii lineup exclusively. However, some E3 attendees noticed that demos for the latter platform were running off of dev kits that included modified GameCubes, which created some confusion.

Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4: Capcom's two most anticipated next-generation games were not present at E3 in any form. The absence of even a frame of footage was particularly glaring, given that trailers for the two games had been shown at Microsoft's X05 event last October and at E3 2005 one year ago.

Half-Life 2: Episode One: Remember when Half-Life 2 was the biggest thing at E3? Times have changed: Even though the episodic expansion is just two weeks away from digital distribution, developer Valve Software decided to skip E3 in any official capacity, though CEO Gabe Newell was seen wandering the show floor outside the Nintendo booth.

Gran Turismo 4 Mobile: Though there were nearly a dozen PS3 demo stations for recently remonikered Gran Turismo HD, the first portable racer from Polyphony Digital was garaged out of sight.

Dragon Age: Role-playing game fans were hoping that BioWare might show off its forthcoming all-original high-fantasy RPG. However, the Canadian developer's focus this year was on Jade Empire for the PC and Mass Effect for the Xbox 360.

Culdcept Saga: On May 1, Namco Bandai made much of the fact that the newest entry into its popular Magic-meets-Monopoly game franchise would be coming to the Xbox 360. However, the first next-gen installment in the series, which has previously appeared on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation, and Dreamcast, couldn't be located at E3 less than a week later.

Starcraft: Ghost: Though it was "indefinitely delayed" on current-gen consoles, many expected Blizzard Entertainment to reveal that the long-in-the-works title would be taking a Perfect Dark Zero-esque roundabout route to next-gen consoles. Guess again--the game was completely missing from the event, further fueling speculation that it has been scrapped in any shape, way, and form.

Rockstar's Untitled Western Shooter for the PS3: When footage from the unnamed third-person six-shooter was included as part of the initial PS3 montage at E3 2005, many expected that a Red Dead Revolver 2 announcement wouldn't be far off. Twelve months later, though, nothing has been heard about the game, and the information well remained bone-dry at E3.

Bully: Though Rockstar eagerly showed off its Xbox 360 Table Tennis game to the press, its controversy-courting high school beat-'em-up called in sick. The game had been announced during E3 2005, but has since come under fire for its depiction of high school brutality, which game-industry gadflies have said could incite real-life violence.

Bethesda, why must you taunt us so?
Bethesda, why must you taunt us so?

Fallout 3: Months prior to the show, Bethesda Softworks said that the third installment of the storied postapocalyptic RPG series would not be on hand at E3. However, that didn't stop the developer-publisher from teasing attendees with a poster, as it did in 2005. This year's one-sheet showed the series' emblematic "Fallout Boy" (called "Action Boy" and "Pip Boy" by some, after the perk and PDA in the game, respectively) superimposed over a faded poster of a happy, 1950s-esque soon-to-be-postnuclear family. "Prepare for the future," read the tagline at the top, further raising expectations of a sequel that crosses the Interplay Fallout games' sly wit and bleak setting with the top-end graphics and free-roaming setting of Bethesda's current bestseller, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Cloud_Strife16 wasn't that "un-named shooter" from Rockstar "Gun"? No Activision made GUN. R* made Red Dead Revolver. P.S. I agree with legionosh on prettymuch everything he has posted.

As long as the Fallout 3 shown at some future E3 is top-down, turn-based, exclusively for PC, and darkly humorous, this guy will be happy. As for the rest of the stuff not shown at this years E3, ah well. HL2 Ep1 will be out soon, so what's the point? As for last year's CG movie KZ2 it for some reason me of Barry Bonds and his homerun record, I could really care less about it. And lastly, Starcraft Ghost is hopefully scrapped for a real Blizzard game... such as Starcraft 2, which fans have been clamoring for for years and not yet gotten.

fartsimpson **killzone2 is realtime** WOW!! I have NEVER BEEN so utterly FLOORED by such a WELL SPOKEN and THOUGHT OUT COMMENT, especially with all the date you had to back up your claim!!! You My friend are a genius among mere mortals!! A GOD among men!! I for one am impressed and take back ANY negative thing I have EVER, EVER, EVER said about Sony!! How evil MS and Nintendo must be to cloud Sonys Grand vision!! Shame on them!! Does their evil know no limits? Oh how could I have been SO wrong?? How could I not see the Glory and Goodness that is Sony?? Have I been so blind that all that has eluded me?? Through the darkness that was my world I now see the light of truth and splendor!! Praise Sony!! Tis a grand day INDEED!!! I now see the truth and light that is Sony!! I now know the grandure that is Sony!! Oh thank all the heavens for finally showing me the err of my ways!! For I shall now die a happy man for but knowing now these words you speak!! fartsimpson, I am forever in your debt my friend!! Maybe someday I will be able to repay you for showing me the way, but for now my simple gratitude will have to suffice. I just hope it will be enough!! ********************************************* Oh wait...it's not realtime. Nevermind. My bad. :-P My two cents, Kevin legionosh@msn.com P.S...yeah now watch this post be reported to a MOD because it was "abusive"..whatever..

neofox5 Methinks you need to stop acting like Sony is innocent here my friend. I don't recall (but my memory admittedly isn't the greatest) Microsoft touting something like Killzone 2 when it was apparent it wasn't an actual game. I am not saying Microsoft is innocent. But then again these past couple of E3s they have been pretty front up front and honest about their games. Every company keeps secrets, that is a given. But given all the hoopla and debates about whether or not it is real time you'd think Sony would shut everyone up and show this year that is was indeed real time. That is the real issue here. As far as the games getting somewhat low reviews I can't argue that. I CAN however say a less than stellar game is a less than stellar game regardless of system. Amped 3 wouldn't have been any better on the PS3 (RIdge Racer 6 on PS3 would have been the same game). I don't recall also any "stunts" MS pulled with their games. Delays are out of MS's hands. I don't recall MS touting any game like it was the cats pajamas and then doing a NO SHOW. DOA has always played like DOA. It's fun for half an hour and then loses most of it's appeal (but then again fighting games aren't my thing..some people love it and that's fine by me). I feel the art style has hurt it far more than anything else. Anime style characters will always have a less than realistic look, and that makes the game look for less "next gen" than it should have. I would in all honesty like to hear all these "stunts" MS has pulled that are even remotely close to the whole Sony Killzone 2 fiasco. So please feel free to post some examples. I'd actually love to see them and debate them with you. Your whole paragraph was bascially as generic a post as is possible (save the mention of DOA4)..how about next time you have some substance to back up your comments? My two cents, kevin legionosh@msn.com

It is strange that everyone says that Sony is a only good because of the people who develop for them. But when these people do things for Microsoft they get short changed.Rare is a good example.Look at the stuff they did for Nintendo but as soon as Microsoft got them suddenly poof half @$$ed games started to appear like the same as before Conker ,the too short Kameo and the very linear Perfect Dark.It is strange that so many companies work their @$$ off for Sony but it makes you wonder sometimes what Microsoft is paying these developers for.

You poor people. So many of you are always saying bad things about Sony.Just because Microsoft is blowing their own horn and Sony is keeping secrets means that Sony is pulling a stunt. What about all the stunts Microsoft has pulled with many of their gam,e not even being close to what they said .So far more then half their game are getting low scores from reviewers.Even DOA that was supposed to be so great plays excatly the same as the other DOAs.So lets stop wailing on sony for a while and focus some anger at Microsoft

golden_ashen **Um, people, you seem to be forgetting a few things, Guerilla is owned by Sony, its thier game, and thier console, who knows thier console better then them?** and what exactly is your point????? **Motorstorm and all those other games were made by external companies, the same kind that make games for Xbox. Which is why no game on X-box will ever be as good as Halo as Microsoft gave bungie first hand help on thier console to get the game onto it.** Yeah, and we see how Motorstorm looks in comparison to the CG movie last year..extremely underwhelming. **And it's not as if Microsoft dont lie, what was that crap they pulled at E3? Oh yeah, Gta4 exclusive.** Aww, did MS make you upset and hurt your feelings? Beides MS did NOT say GTA4 was exclusive, they said it would be available from day one (meaning it will launch on the 360 and PS3 at the same time, none of this silly 6 month exlcusive stuff). VincentV21 **Ok, the idiot who said Killzone 2 was a stunt needs to get off his Microsoft fanboy high horse and shutup.** Geez talk about someone getting offended. Some of us (myself included) had some very valid points and I personally tried to present them in a factual manner and not a flame towards Sony. If you were offended that is indeed your problem... How about giving a logical statement in return as opposed to telling some of us to SHUT UP? **Secondly, all of these games not making an appearance doesn't mean anything. Just because something is shown at E3 doesn't mean anything except that people can't hype up a trailer or pics. Even demos don't mean anything.** No it doesn't mean anything, but with all the hoopla from the Kiilzone 2 CG movie last year you'd think Sony would come back with it...especially with it running in "real time" last year and having a year more developement time "surely" it would look even better... ...and I won't say how dissapointed I was with Motorstorm. It was such a FAR cry from last years CG movie it's unreal. **Examples? : Max Payne, Half Life 2, Doom 3, blah blah blah blah blah, all of these saw E3 after E3 and what did it do? Nothng but hype them up.** Yes and often Hype does a lot to help a game, or hinder it. Not sure how this relates to Sonys Killzone 2 CG movie? Yes it was hyped from last year, and all but the Sony fanboys are wondering why it didn't show if it was SO awesome...the rest of us know it was only a movie. Welcome to the real world. My two cents, kevin legionosh@msn.com

I cannot trust this site anymore.* ____________________________________________________ you do know that all games that have not been released yet are "still under development," right? so how exactly is it any different from any of the other scores of games that were shown at E3? c'mon, please think before you try to pollute the board with your ignorant fanboy ranting.

Some of these were no brainers. The ones I'm surprised that didn't make the show are GTA4 since it is nearly a year from release and Killzone. Last year sony used this same game to show just how great the games could look. This year I guess the game just didn't look nearly good as sony would have liked.

I believe for PS3 Games, we won't see any of those footage from KILL ZONE PS3 until the PS3 is shipped. If the Title does not as good as the E3 2005 trailer, the hype of the game will be gone and might have impact on PS3 console. So far What we seen and what we got from E3 05 to E3 06 is Heavenly Sword...this is going be a big Hit War Hawk and Motor strom didn't live up to what we've seen it last year. Wonder what will be the PS3 launch title this coming holiday......?

@ Stryker4 The KIllzone 2 CGI was a light year ahead, even for such a technically advanced game like Crysis. I would be surprised if the next generation consoles (Xbox 720, PS4) could even have such power.

I understand that Nintendo focused on Wii and DS. The Gamecube is dying so why not show off the future.. Many of the other games are probably some way in the future so it would be dumb to show them if there wasn't any major news to show off. And to those doubting Killzone, you'll see...

The biggest disappointment for me was not hearing anything at all about the "free" poker game which was supposed to be coming to XBOX LIVE. Like, even when Gamespot was doing the LIVE Arcade stage demo, no mention was made of it. The only poker game they showed was a commercial product that is going to utilize the 360 camera. I'm really enjoying the Degree sponsored game that Microsoft has on their Zone.com website, and I was kinda hoping that this was the free version that was coming to Live. If there is a commercial game, that certainly means there won't be a free one anymore, which sucks. I feel a bit used as it was mentioned at last years E3 ( i think, or GDC, or tgs, one of those), and then Peter Moore mentioned it again in an interview with Gamespot. Believe it or not, knowing there was gonna be a free poker game influenced my decision to purchase a 360.

Thats because GC games look exactly like Wii games and they didn't want to expose that. as for GBA i dont know maybe they're finally paying attention to the DS and leaving the old stuff in the past. who knows. i guess they are becoming Nintendon't. But it is true the Wii games look horrible. Zelda looks the same as the GC version.

dont let these companies dictate what you like. choose for yourself. That statement can only be true to an extent. Game companies pour extra money into titles they want you to buy, and as a result, they end up having more features and more options and mechanics than some of the under-funded or more interesting games that never get released. Of course you can choose for yourself, but sometimes the big name titles are the best because they are the best. Not because they want you to think so. (select an action below) ______________ Report Abuse To Moderator Posted May 15, 2006 10:10 pm PT True. but there have been games that companies put money into and hyped up and then ended up being a big disappointment. i cant name any at the moment but it has happened

Ok, the idiot who said Killzone 2 was a stunt needs to get off his Microsoft fanboy high horse and shutup. Secondly, all of these games not making an appearance doesn't mean anything. Just because something is shown at E3 doesn't mean anything except that people can't hype up a trailer or pics. Even demos don't mean anything. Examples? : Max Payne, Half Life 2, Doom 3, blah blah blah blah blah, all of these saw E3 after E3 and what did it do? Nothng but hype them up.

I love how everything on here becomes a MS vs. Sony discussion. MS won't put sony out of business. Sony won't put MS out of business. End of story. Dreamcast died because of a lot of factors, not cause sony and nintendo laid the smack down. All this discussion became was a whole "u r a ms fanboy lol" or "u r sony's fanboy lololzomg". People have opinions and people need to deal with it. Weird reading this stuff and thinking that it stemmed from which games didn't make it to E3. Don't think killzone was real? OK good, say so and don't attack sony for it. While I'm saying this, Im not a sony fanboy at all, in fact I'm going out to buy a 360 in a few days... why hate either company? Buy what you like and leave what you don't. The only honest to god complaint I have with PS3 is the price, I'm definitely not going to be getting it at launch... but buying any system at launch is risky anyway, a lot of bugs aren't worked out yet. In conclussion to this... PS3 will look great and just get better during it's life... just like PS2 games have. 360 games look great and will keep looking better and better as time goes on. Tada. End. So, onto the topic. I was really disappointed not to hear anything on RE5. RE4 went through many different story/setting/everything changes... so hard telling what we could see when that finally gets some more publicity. Also, Fallout 3... I hadn't even heard of that, glad to see they are keeping the series alive with another sequel (not a brother hood of steel... etc. thing). Hopefully it lives up to the first 2.
