E3 '07: Gamecock holds 'funeral' for E3

Indie publisher commiserates over the death of the massive spectacle that was the game industry's old trade show.

Gamecock's Harry Miller delivers his rousing eulogy.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--It's an interesting sight: a top-hat-coiffed, shirtless man on stilts, draped in black, rocking a cigarette in one hand and a red, frat-party Dixie cup full of booze in the other. More so at a funeral. But alas, such was the scene at Gamecock's send-off of the old Electronic Entertainment Expo on Friday night.

Kicking off not-so-promptly at 4:20 p.m., the The Nightmare Before Christmas–esque procession--full of misfits and degenerates, game programmers and game journalists--ambled forth from Gamecock's swanky setup at the Hotel California on Ocean Avenue, unceremoniously halting traffic without the typical police escort, much to the dismay of bewildered motorists stuck on one-way streets.

Once on the beach, a contingent of Santa Monica's finest did arrive, though seemingly only to chat up the scantily clad dancers in the procession. As the spectacle meandered on, a palpable wave of discomfort was left in its wake as the otherwise pristine day on Venice Beach was marred by a marching jazz band's upbeat death fugue and Gamecockers ran up and down the line, herding the throng along. By far the highlight of the brief jaunt was an unfortunate, and ongoing, string of wardrobe malfunctions experienced by none other than Gamecock cofounder Mike Wilson, as the hospital gown he was wearing flapped in the wind.

Is this the end?
Is this the end?

At long last, the parade reached its destination, a phallic concrete outcropping outside "on the waterfront cafe" on Venice Beach. Here, Gamecock's other cofounder, Harry Miller, delivered a brief yet succinct eulogy for the metaphorical bloated corpse the group had come to bury and called for a new era in game development that is dominated not by sequels and annuals, but by creativity and the reemergence of quality.

For Gamecock, that means publishing upcoming releases such as Hail to the Chimp, Dementium: The Ward, and Insecticide. As Miller wrapped up his speech, the wake closed with another ditty by the marching band, accompanied by a rousing performance by the conspicuously limber dancers. And, with that, the sun set once more on the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

It's obvious that E3 will either not stay this way or another show will take its place. There is a demand, it is only so long before the supply arrives. If ESA is smart, they'll figure out a way to handle this. @Pablo620: Yeah, but TGS is in Tokyo. We at least had (have) a possibility of visiting E3 in the US.

I dont know about you but i saw peeks if new ganes, systems, news, press, etc..., just as you say Albi4ever. Its just a bit smaller now and not as crazy and expensive as before. There is plenty of other shows that are growing because of this downsizing. TGS is now probably the big show. And Leipzig show is getting bigger, GDC is bigger. Theres now alot of shows instead of just one HUGE show. I for one am excited for TGS

"E3 had become something that fans looked forward too. something we could all talk about and get excited about. seeing peeks at new games, systems, news, press, etc... Now they've turned it into a stiff business meeting. basically. well, that might be "productive" when you want to talk about business. but these are video games after all, and like it or not, gamers ARE watching and listening to the coverage... if its small, lame, and underwhelming, we arent going to get excited about it. if we arent excited, developers wont know if they are on the right track. If E3 is suppose to have been a trade fair that turned into a commercial monster, then make a new commercial monster for us, PLEASE. there is a place for both types of shows, and both are needed. leave the boring talk in the office rooms, and give us our old E3 back- in some venue somewhere soon. This E3 was way too quiet for me, and many others. Not one of my friends asked about E3 last week... while in the past, we were on constant watch for new media and talking about the latest and greatest... lame." There's this little thing called E4 coming up soon. Look into it.

So let me get this straight, the new E3 with so few Indie developers in attendance is marked by "creativity and the reemergence of quality," while the old E3 with every developer and his mama was nothing but "dominated... by sequels and annuals."???

Well...I guess that's one way to show your respect to the old E3...Even if I never made it to any of them they sounded much more invigorating than the "New" E3...

Given that Gamecock has it's roots in Gathering Of Developers, this ...... actually isn't surprising at all.

Alot of people act as though E3 isn't no more, such as this display says... thats abit retarded. They stop'd the over commercialization of game products in general with this approach, not killed off the spirit of E3... People that say Gamecock is a realized publisher and that they are creditable, or have shaped and changed the gaming community are entirely wrong. Hell, most of these people on here didn't even hear about gamecock until they decided to hire a man on stilts. I think I myself got a lovely turn-out from the E3 area, alot of hands on still happened, just less blinding lights, and less people, it was abit last minute of a change is what threw people off. This was a waste of time, and has done nothing for the gaming community. I feel like I got "DUMBER" by simply reading this.

Gamecock thinks they are so awesome, and my question is why? Because being mainstream and successful isn't cool?! And hopefully I don't get modded for saying the word gamecock because it's the name of a developer.

Congrats to Gamecock's display, it got noticed and published even though it was ridiculous and obscene.... This should have been left un reported, hence deemed unnoticed. Their target was achieved even if it was lame and... what is the word? ah OK! dumb.

@rokkuman09, mpalcio, and Mush_Mouth GameCock is a publisher, not a developer, idiots. It doesn't "make games". Further more, it's policies are some of the most groundbreaking in the industry. They publish as a major publisher, but utilize indie-esque policies, most importantly that any dev working with them hav ethe right to fully retain their IPs. Additionally, while the specific publisher hasn't released anything yet (but will do so soon), most of the people behind it have come from Gathering, which had a similar direction in trying to reinject creativity into the industry. GameCock is one of the best things that has happened to the industry in recent years. Show some respect, you ignorant tools.

Wow this is just is stupid.. I mean why would they waste time and money doing that.. No one really cares about it as this company hasn't made any good games and therefore has no authority, or reason that anyone should care what they say.

What a waste of time and space. Let's have a moment of silence for all the idiot game developers that live in CA and devote their time to rubbish like this instead of making their crappy games better.

I liked the old E3, this new one is just boring. The old E3 was like the oscars for the gaming world. IMO this is a step backwards for gaming.

Honestly it really doesn't affect us since 99.9% of us can't go to E3 anyways as long as we get info it's fine by me. But it doesn't feel like E3 without the booth babes. I miss those girls who had nothing to do with the company

It was a rather odd funeral. I had no prior knowledge of this eccentric event, I simply stumbled upon it. I live in Venice and I was on my usual afternoon bike ride when I came across a semi-large group all wearing black, some on stilts, and another playing a bagpipe. Being that I live in Venice, I didn't think it was that odd or out of the ordinary. I stopped to pay my respects to the "old E3", especially considering I used to sneak into that event every year and snatch up as much swag as I could find... Anyways, the actually funeral was somewhat boring so I soon left onto my bike once again.

Their games seem original and cool enough, their parties seem uncalled for and whacky. They seem to be going for the cool "fresh" look, but what does any of that have to do with games?
