Blizzard Entertainment has revealed that Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition runs in 1080p on PlayStation 4 and 900p on Xbox One. Senior producer for the console version, Julia Humphreys, confirmed the resolution details to Joystiq in an interview this week from E3.

Both versions of Diablo III run at 60fps. "We're prioritizing frame rate," Humphreys said about the difference in resolution. It was previously confirmed that Diablo III would run in 1080p on PS4, but the Xbox One resolution was unknown.

Resolution has been a hot topic of late, as the trend continues that multiplatform games often run in a higher resolution on PlayStation 4 than Xbox One. This disparity might not last forever, though, as Microsoft recently rolled out a new Xbox One software development kit update that boosts the console's GPU power. In the case of Bungie's Destiny, this update has allowed the studio to reach 1080p on Xbox One.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition launches August 19 for PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The game contains the main Diablo III game and the Reaper of Souls expansion. As we learned at E3 this week, the PS4 version of the game includes infected from The Last of Us, as well as a special Shadow of the Colossus transmog set.

Actually the new SDK does change the hardware in a way, as it allows developers to make use of the previously reserved GPU resources. DirectX 12 will give developers more tools and options for graphics which will help them optimize titles.

@TabularBeast @gamebuyer22 Destiny on X1 is 1080p 30fps. What's YOUR point? And it's the same resolution on PS4, so don't think I'm biased. I'm just stating a fact.

<< LINK REMOVED >> In this case, not getting D3 to 1080p is totally on Blizzard. There's no reason good why they can't, as the X1's hardware is more than enough to handle D3 at that resolution.

While the xbox one hardware is lazy, Blizzard has become lazy over the past few years.

It's frustating because I would actually prefer the controller to play this; but I refuse to buy a console.

Aah, well-- I'll just play The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing instead.

I find it difficult to believe that the difference between 900 and 1080p will be enough to see a noticeable difference. I will have to see it in person on TVs side by side, not some Internet video that's been compressed.

@spartanx169x

On TV's 42" or smaller you cannot tell the diference, If you game on a TV 65" or bigger you can see a difference. And of course how close you sit to the TV will have an effect.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You are not getting 180 less lines though, the X1 will output at 1080p but it has achieved that by stretching the 900p image to 1080p using a hardware upscaler. Usually, stretching an image is not a good thing to do but since the upscaler in the X1 is so good, the actual output is not that far different from the PS4, a small bit of blur around the edges at most.

Could this be poor optimization on Blizzards part? Probably...

However, the PS4's GDDR5 RAM is significantly better than X1's esRAM - which might have alot to do with this along with all the other underperforming games in terms of resolution.

We also have to consider that the X1 is reportedly harder to optimize and develop for than the PS4.

We also still dont have concrete info on what GPU's the PS4 and X1 use, atleast not to my knowledge.

But for a game like Reaper of Souls on console, the resolution difference wont be noticible at all between the X1 and PS4 version. So everyone still wins in the end.

I believe it has more to do with they had the game done before the new SDK that released the reserved GPU resources was available. Had they had those tools available earlier, I am sure they could have made both versions identical. I see no problem with the 900p for this game and glad they decided to prioritize framerate over resolution. Perhaps with a later patch they can bump up the graphics.

@Digital_DJ_00 It also probably too late to Blizzard use the new X1 SDK that gives 10% more GPU power.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The PS4's GDDR5 Ram is not better than the X1's combination of DDR3 and ESRam but it is a lot easier to optimise for as you don't need to worry about where to store something in memory, you just store everything in one place and its quick. For the X1 on the other hand, developers need to decide whether something should go in the small quick ESRam or the slower larger DDR3 pool etc so optimisation becomes tricky.
