E3 2018: Elder Scrolls 6 Is Officially On The Way

Finally, a new core Elder Scrolls game is on the way.

During Bethesda's E3 2018 press conference, the publisher announced the next game in the Elder Scrolls series: The Elder Scrolls VI. The announcement followed Elder Scrolls Blades, a mobile game that seeks to be a "pure" Elder Scrolls experience.

No other details about the game were provided outside of a short teaser, which you can watch above. It shows a mountainous region and some fog accompanied by a version of the iconic Dovahkiin music. A setting wasn't specified, although fans are sure to do some sleuthing to narrow down the list of possibilities. We also got no indication of when Elder Scrolls VI will release or what platforms it's coming to. But hey, at least we know it really is coming (eventually).

Now Playing: The Elder Scrolls 6 Reveal Teaser Trailer | Bethesda E3 2018

Earlier in the press conference, Bethesda's Todd Howard joked about Skryim's many re-releases. This was followed by a skit featuring Key & Peele's Keegan-Michael Key and Amazon's Alexa. The Elder Scrolls Blades reveal was a bit later, and the Elder Scrolls VI announcement closed the show. We also got news on another much-anticipated project, Starfield, which is the first "wholly original" franchise from Bethesda in 25 years.

For more on E3 2018, be sure to stay tuned to GameSpot as we continue to post news, trailers, impressions, gameplay, and more. To catch up with Bethesda's conference, check out our roundup of all the news.

I'd love an Elder Scrolls game set in Elsweyr just because the Kahjiit are my favorite race in the Elder Scrolls universe. What can I say, I like cats. Plus, the jungles of Elsweyr could make for some really cool scenery.

The only question I have is whether or not they'll make ES6 for the Nintendo Switch?

Tghis game needs a totally new engine. Most gameplay and other mechanics still feel the same from Morrowind days.

If when you say on the way you mean next gen and probably not even early next gen then yeah elder scrolls 6 is "on the way". Starfield is coming first which is also next gen so that means tes6 will probably be 2-3 years into next gen . I'm actually far more excited for starfield than scrolls. I love sci fi and am pretty much sick of fantasy settings in rpg's. I thought the Witcher 3 was boring as f but couldn't be more excited for Cyberpunk. It's probably the most interesting thing at E3 this year which says a lot considering how many great games were shown.

The Elder Scrolls VI? Mountainous region? Dovahkiin music? I think it's pretty obvious we are looking at The Elder Scrolls VI: Aka*VI*r.

My guess? Some disgruntled Bethesda employee quit their job and threatened to reveal Starfield and ES6, and so Bethesda forced the announcements themselves to counter it.

Well.... its an unpopular opinion but Skyrim wasnt good. They should completely overhaul the entire formula and i doubt they'll do that since Skyrim was such a "huge success".

It also doesnt bode well to me that Todd wants to wait for next gen technology, meaning emphasis placed on visuals at the expense of any decent, fun gameplay.

Someone also should tell Bethesda that a multitude of different features and mechanics dont make the game fun unless they have depth unlike most of the shallow, stripped down crap in Skyrim. Take a note from Zelda's book. Cut the features down to about half but really put the effort to those features and make sure they are actually fun to play.

@amillionhp: I've logged more hours in Skyrim than any other single player game in my gaming life. (now 30+ years). So, i disagree. True sandbox adventure game.

@amillionhp: What TES needs, and future tech can help bring, is good A.I. That is still the sore thumb whether it's psychics, stuckers or any of the dozen other archetype failures.

There are enough games which are limited to very, very spesific set of features. TES is great at trying to do everything. Sure its not perfect but TES is extremely high quality compared to all the other similar games.

I doubt it's even in development. I would say Todd Howard told someone to give him a few seconds of mountains just to shut people up.

@couly: Yeah, it's not, but it's on the drawing board or in concept phase i think. I think they got it more or less outlined at the moment, while not yet being in active development.

So they made a teaser trailer to shut-up fans.

So they can then continue to re-release Skyrim again with more "special editions". With the rate of the next-gen consoles, they'll probably have PS5 and the next Xbox out and then re-release Skyrim again with all the prior versions and "better modding support for consoles" again before this comes out.

Because at least initially from the coding in Skyrim/Fallout the underlying game engine is going to require more improvements to make it better (or hey they're just waiting for the next-gen console as the same game engine can always use slightly more power -> while still limited by some factors like flight, speed, horses/mounts and others).

I want to be positive and think this will come out but then at the same time the reality is the dev may just as easily again re-release Skyrim again for more things/consoles probably OSX & Linux next (and the next-gen consoles because why not...?)

A shame they wasted so much time on the disaster they called Elder Scrolls Online, we could be getting 7 instead of 6.

@DeviantCode:

Guys, as much as you may bristle at DeviantCode calling ESO a "disaster" (I have no horse in this race; I've never played the game), s/he's right.

The mere existence of such a large Elder Scrolls property like ESO, regardless of which studio produced it, means that Bethesda/ZeniMax isn't going to divide and cannibalize their own market by putting out another centerpiece game, e.g., a core ES game. That's simple business--and if that comes off as cynical, well, it's simple logic as well. Weirdly (!), The Two Towers and The Return of the King weren't released simultaneously (despite the fact that they were both filmed at the same time).

Doesn't anyone recall the enormous amount of conversation when ESO came out, the comments like "Oh well, looks like we won't be getting Elder Scrolls 6 for a while!" People were saying that for a) a reason and b) with a basic understanding of how business is conducted and money is made.

@leisureleepace: You know core ES fans despise ESO, and probably vice versa? :)

There's a fairly small overlap.

@siarhei:

I'm not sure I understand your point.

If it's that developing an ES and ESO centerpiece game at the same time wouldn't significantly divide a market, well, statisitcally and logically, that makes no sense.

An overwhelmingly enormous percentage of ESO fans were drawn to the game either through playing the core games or simply being aware of them. Those players haven't suddenly disavowed the core games (or, if they're not directly familiar with them, lost their curiosity in them); they haven't decided that "Hey, these games I liked I no longer like because I like this online game more."

In other words, ESO players will return to the core series. ESO fans are fans of ES. Redirecting players (and potential players) from a lucrative online game into a time-sink RPG is not a sound business move.

As I think you know, the fact that some ES fans don't like and don't play ESO isn't something on the table in this equation, as we're talking solely about breaking up an existent playing-and-paying community.

If I've misunderstood your point, sorry.

@DeviantCode: For one, it's not the same studios working on ESO and ESVI. For two, despite being boring as all hell, ESO has actually become pretty darn popular and keeps getting big expansions.

@DeviantCode: The two games being made by different studios means the one can't delay the development of the other, and ESO being popular means it wasn't a disaster for Bethesda.

I get that you don't care for ESO, and that's fine (I don't like it either), but don't be an idiot about it.

@Mogan: Bethesda is a subsidiary of ZeniMax. From the overarching perspective, the parent company wouldn't want to saturate the Elder Scrolls market with two major titles simultaneously. ESO has been around for a while and they've milked what they could out of that, now it's time to get everyone excited about Elder Scrolls with a new major release. It's not a question of logistics, it's a question of marketing their IP.

I'm sorry if you think that's "being an idiot about it" but pejoratives do not strengthen your argument.

@DeviantCode: You must not know how a company works, being a subsidiary is not the same thing. You said Bethesda tied up their time with ESO and that's why we do not have ES6, or ES7. Bethesda Did Not Make it, ZeniMax did! Just because Bethesda owns Zenimax, doesn't mean Bethesda's direct employees were busy making ESO, that's why they had one of their subsidiaries to make it. You are just showing how little you understand company structure. The sad part is instead of learning, you argue from a position of wrong.

@TTB1: Wow. You join the conversation late only to show you don't know what's being talked about. Two corporate entities under the same umbrella are not going to release major competing titles in the same IP in the same marketing window. It's not about development capacity, as I already said, it's about business.

@DeviantCode: Bethesda has never, and probably could never, release their main ES so close to one another. They're not that far removed from still putting work into Skyrim. It's why they decided to try and cash in on the MMO. Allow their subsidiary to make a off-shoot, profit from that, while working to grow their main franchise entry. Especially with 4K and the huge worlds they craft, it takes time to make that to the level they want. Just because it holds the Elder Scrolls name, they don't have the exact same audience. I love ES, but I'm not into online MMO's, so it's not a direct competition. Whatever, this doesn't deserve anymore of my time.

I think it'll be released in 2018 or 2019. Didn't they say that they'd try to announce games when they're "coming soon"? Starfield is different since they said it's far from complete.
