E3 2018: Elder Scrolls 6 Is Officially On The Way

Finally, a new core Elder Scrolls game is on the way.

261 Comments

During Bethesda's E3 2018 press conference, the publisher announced the next game in the Elder Scrolls series: The Elder Scrolls VI. The announcement followed Elder Scrolls Blades, a mobile game that seeks to be a "pure" Elder Scrolls experience.

No other details about the game were provided outside of a short teaser, which you can watch above. It shows a mountainous region and some fog accompanied by a version of the iconic Dovahkiin music. A setting wasn't specified, although fans are sure to do some sleuthing to narrow down the list of possibilities. We also got no indication of when Elder Scrolls VI will release or what platforms it's coming to. But hey, at least we know it really is coming (eventually).

Now Playing: The Elder Scrolls 6 Reveal Teaser Trailer | Bethesda E3 2018

Earlier in the press conference, Bethesda's Todd Howard joked about Skryim's many re-releases. This was followed by a skit featuring Key & Peele's Keegan-Michael Key and Amazon's Alexa. The Elder Scrolls Blades reveal was a bit later, and the Elder Scrolls VI announcement closed the show. We also got news on another much-anticipated project, Starfield, which is the first "wholly original" franchise from Bethesda in 25 years.

For more on E3 2018, be sure to stay tuned to GameSpot as we continue to post news, trailers, impressions, gameplay, and more. To catch up with Bethesda's conference, check out our roundup of all the news.

Wait, "Dovahkiin music"? So I guess this I'll be TES6: Skyrim 2 - Daggerfall.

@NoFear87: that's not "Dovahkiin music" that's just the original elder scrolls soundtrack.

The amount of joy I felt when I woke up this morning and saw this was announced is indescribable. I'm assuming the game wouldn't be out until around 2020 anyway (being optimistic here), and probably on the next gen console. Also hoping the mobile game isn't crap. I don't like mobile gaming, its like eating tacos with lettuce for shells.

When you need to play the theme music from Skyrim in a teaser for TES VI, it means you have nothing but a teaser. This thing is easily 4 to 5 years out.

@jsprunk: I mean, the theme song hasnt ever really changed for TES. The melody is the same but they tweak how its performed for each title.

@skywalkerforce: THIS. What most people think of as the Skyrim Theme is actually The Elder Scrolls Theme. They've now done at least 6 versions of it, but you can easily find 3, 4, 5, and most of the ESO variants on YouTube.

@Pyrosa: I agree and I revise my statement. This version of TES theme seems much more percussion heavy than the Skyrim version.

OMG YES! I am so there! Remember when we were told that ESO was all there was to come? GIVE ME SINGLE PLAYER NOW!! I am so sick and tired of multiplayer games. There are times you just want to run the story and have fun on your own accord.

"Iconic Dovahkiin music" get to ****, that's the theme they've used since Morrowind - possibly earlier.

@dkjenvey: No, it started with Morrowind. That's when they got Jeremy Soule to write the soundtrack. Arena and Daggerfall had a different composer and theme.

After the butchering of Fallout with 4 and 76, I'm really hesitant to take Bethesda seriously. I hope that TES VI won't go down the same path as the Fallout franchise. We'll see.

@Berserk8989: Why? Online piece bothers you? Most people want experience Elder Scrolls with friends. Fallout 76 allows you to play by yourself -- I'm sure ES6 will too. I don't get how people still complain about inclusion of multiplayer in 2018.

@Berserk8989: I personally think Bethesda handle the Scroll games with more care overall, while Fallout they play with and don't dedicate themselves as seriously with. I just hope they put RPG elements back into the game than the more action focused Skyrim.

@Berserk8989: I don’t consider it butchering. They’re not trying to say 76 is a next gen title. Yes it’s a Fallout 4 reskin but it’s multiplayer fallout with some cool ideas that I think justifies the buy. I wouldn’t play fallout 4 again with a multiplayer dlc, but i’ll gladly buy a new game with new quests/monsters/side missions/world etc.

Todd also said that elder scrolls is even further down the line. First is Star, then es6 so no I don’t think it will be a milked franchise.

@linkbuscus01: Compare Fallout 4 and now 76 to Fallout 1, 2 or even New Vegas. It's butchering of a franchise. It's just about dumbing down the franchise beyond recognizability for mass appeal. Role-playing elements are thrown out like they're nothing, even though that was the core-appeal of the franchise, alongside the setting and lore (which also suffer due to this streamlining, considering 76's trailer).

@Berserk8989: jfc man. It’s only been 3 years since fallout 4. This isn’t their next single player only rpg based fallout game. This is Bethesda experimenting and trying new things within the same franchise. This isn’t a fallout 4 sequel, and this isn’t the butchering of a franchise. This is a fun idea that MANY people have been asking for since fallout 4. Tactics came out over 10 years ago. Fallout shelter wasn’t the “butchering” of a franchise. Tone down the pessimism and just be optimistic about a game for once. This looks enjoyable and it isn’t going to destroy the company or the future games “you love so much”

@Berserk8989: Tactics came out 15+ years ago, spin-off Fallout games are nothing new and nothing detracting from the series. Tone down the naysaying already.

@Berserk8989: imo it's already got a little too simple with Skyrim. I get user friendly experiences and everything but they sacrifice too much to get that. On top of that they keep messing with the lore and contradicting past, better games.

@dkjenvey: I'd also go one step further and say that it already got too simple with Oblivion (I actually consider Skyrim the better game). But yeah, nothing can compare with Morrowind. I hope TES VI will take a few notes from Morrowind. I mean, they have an immense fanbase, they can take the 'risk' and make it a bit more Morrowind-ey.

@dkjenvey:

Man, it got too simple even with Oblivion imo.

Everything got so generic and bland (user friendly, as some suggest) after Morrowind, where you had no fast travel and over-filled map. You just had some basic guides and explanations and were to find your way through means of exploration.

But that was the best part about Morrowind: demanding but satisfying learning curve and the overwhelming sense of exploration. None of the later ES titles had this sort of magic for me.

@Hellpop:

You could use public transport of a sort (ship, boat, those huge ass bugs etc.) at a few spots, like bigger cities and such. It is the same system Skyrim had installed but it is not fast travel. In Skyrim you can like instantly transport to a cave on other side of map that you passed by who knows when, and didn't even notice. Hell, in Morrowind you won't even get that cave shown on map, you have to find it each and every time.

@horosavinXX: If you don’t like fast travel, don’t use it. Heck, you can even mod it out. I don’t see why you conflate removing quality of life features just to “force” players into a bizarre play style of backtracking over hours of content with a well made game.

Skyrim was the best ES game by far, and I’ve played since Daggerfall.

@Baconstrip78:

It is about the distinctive game design, not about one choosing to use or not to use some of its features.

It's as if you said: hey it is cool to have a save spot (bonfire) in front of every boss in a Dark Soul game, but if you are hard-core - you can just opt not to use it. But then it wouldn't be a DS game.

Bethesda opted for more laid-back, mellow and generic design with Oblivion and I just didn't like it as much as the Morrowind. That is all.
