Let the countdown to E3 2018 officially begin.

122 Comments

Update 3: Another day, another Sony reveal. This time it's for a narrative-driven PS4 title called Twin Mirror. It's in development at Dontnod, the same studio responsible for Life is Strange and Vampyr. It's due out sometime in 2019.

Update 2: The next Sony announcement has come, and this time around it's a Days Gone release date. Following a previously announced delay, the open-world zombie game will launch for PS4 on February 22, 2019.

Now Playing: Sony To Announce New PlayStation Games Ahead Of E3 2018 - GS News Update

Update: The first of Sony's reveals has happened, and it's for an unexpected new Tetris game from the creator of Rez and Lumines. It's called Tetris Effect and is headed to PS4 with optional PSVR support. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming announcements. The original story follows.

E3 2018 starts in a little under a week, and ahead of the massive showcase, Sony has released an announcement schedule on the PlayStation Blog leading up to its press conference on Monday, June 11. Starting Wednesday, June 6, Sony plans to announce three new games, a release date for an upcoming game (more than likely a PlayStation 4 exclusive), and details of "An Eagerly Anticipated Game [Coming] to PS VR," each being offered once a day for the next five days, effectively concluding on Sunday, June 10. From Wednesday to Sunday, each announcement will be held at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET (4 PM BST), as we join Sony for its countdown to E3 2018.

It's difficult to say what those three new games could be, as a few of Sony's studios are already working on named projects: Bend Studio is working on Days Gone, Japan Studio is supposedly working on Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, London Studio is working on Blood & Truth, Media Molecule is working on Dreams, Naughty Dog is working on The Last of Us Part II, and Sucker Punch is working on Ghost of Tsushima.

However, in the past four or so years, Sony has opened four new studios: PixelOpus, established in 2014; Manchester Studio, established in 2015; ForwardWorks, established in 2016; and San Mateo Studio, also established in 2016. PixelOpus is currently working on Concrete Genie, which is slated for a 2018 release, but there's no official confirmation of what the other studios are working on, so Sony could have these three studios announce their projects.

Sony's E3 2018 press conference is Monday, June 11 at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET (2 AM BST / 11 AM on June 12). Be sure to check our E3 2018 page for coverage of all the latest games, including interviews, previews, trailers, and more.

There are rumours that Sony has opened a new studio in Santa Monica to work on a new Uncharted game (likely with a different protagonist). We probably won't hear about it if it's real for a long time though.

@playstationzone: as great as the Uncharted series is I'd rather see something new. We already have 5 Uncharted games, if you count Lost Legacy. I'm a fan of action adventure games but they have to have some ideas that could take place outside of the Uncharted series.

It's probably nothing of great interest if they're willing to talk about it before the show.

Wait is it 3 games or 2? What's the 3rd game? A normal game or a VR game?

You know, I actually kinda hate it when devs do this, as it has a bad habit of undermining E3 itself, often making the conferences far less exciting than they would have been had they simply saved them for E3.

It would be one thing if they made announcements that everyone saw coming a mile away like, "Hey guys, did you know we're going to release yet another installment of a yearly series?! Well we totally are!" but instead they have a bad habit of saving WWE2K19 for E3 then announcing something far more exciting a week before E3.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: They're probably hoping you'll tune in to E3 to watch the conferences to see actual footage of said announced game. You can't be excited to watch if you don't know or care about what's being discussed, right?

Well, that's one school of thought anyway. I prefer the surprises.

@Barighm: along those same lines you could look at it as Sony having to reveal these games early because their conference is already too jammed packed. If they are announcing a few games before E3 even starts then they have to have some suprises for the show...right?

Love all these leaks ahead of the big show. Makes you wonder if there is any point to E3 this year.

@videogameninja:

But this one isn't really a leak. Sony themselves made this announcement. Maybe they are revealing the games early too avoid the possibility of leaks and spoilers before the show. Or, my wishful thinking, they have other surprises coming during the conference and they wanted to get some reveals out of the way now to make space during the show.

Although, the most likely and obvious option is that Sony is indeed using their conference to focus solely on the "Big 4" games they mentioned and they have no plans of any game surprises or announcements during their show. I hope this isn't the case but, either way, it's nice to know that Sony does indeed have some kind of game announcements to make which is better than nothing (which some people speculated about when they announced a focus on the "Big 4").

Why? Why, why, why?

Note to devs, Sony, MS, EVERYONE: The best part of E3 are the surprise trailers. The announcements. The times you go "Whoa, that's AWESOME" for the first time.

We all love those.

All these pre announcements undermine all of that. Save it for the stage. Please. Otherwise, what? It's nothing but a bunch of dudes playing stuff for an hour saying "Isn't this cool?" Which is far less cool than the surprises.

@olddadgamer:

To many pre-E3 reveals can definitely be bad. But an E3 reveal with just a neat trailer that shows nothing of value and could even be actively misleading about the end state graphics or gameplay could be just as bad or worse.

I don't find extensive gameplay demonstrations to be a bad of E3 personally.

@olddadgamer: Yep. Too many pre-E3 reveals. It's like opening your Christmas presents on 21 December. It just feels wrong.

@olddadgamer: I agree but, at the same time, these are basically surprise announcements we just know when they are coming. I'm actually a little more excited now that I know we are getting some game reveals. Better than hoping for game reveals and getting nothing. Just hope these games are something to be excited about. At the end of the day that's what's most important.

@scottyp360: fair point. Avoiding disappointment is a good thing.

And I’ll forgive anything if one of the games is horizon 2.

I think they worry that games will get buried in the avalanche of information sometimes.

I love the surprises and would rather they released more info afterwards in the weeks that follow. Summer is normally dull for news

@barcaazul: I guess....but I don't think they need to worry about that.

With the exception of the year that the PS4 and X1 both came out, I can't remember a single E3 where we weren't all talking about the games we saw for weeks afterwards. And usually what made all that fun was the wild speculation, the breakdowns of the trailers, the often huge, hopeful and stupid predictions we made.

It was never the publicity stunts, or the weird peripherals, or the 27 minutes of some gameplay that put us to sleep.

They don't know us very well, do they?
