EA closing BattleForge

This sucks. I just found out about this game today and was all excited to play it, only to find that 1. It won't let me and 2. EA is cancelling it. What is EA becoming....another Yahoo games company! I thought you were better than that! Give it as a free download! Put it on a different server. There are many things you can do to appease us and I hope you do something so that we can play this game still, or at least so that I can play it for the first and then continue to play it along with everyone else.

What a shame, and I just found out today, hoping I could try the old game out again. To think I spent hundreds on this game back in the day, before I understood that online games like this could be "shut down".

Not even giving old players the chance to download their own version to play offline or on private servers either? My goodness, EA, that's not going to earn you any points in the community.

Well the push to the next gen games was there right in the beginning with the xbox one, so no one would need to find a place to store their boxes and cd's in their drawers... It also is a means to getting their way of having total control over their franchise and i will have no means to pulling out 10 year old games out of my drawer to enjoy them as i see fit. Also most of the new games are predominately mp games, so expect to be in a world of hurt. The signs are all there. i really would like a glimpse into the future, like 10 years on, and see how all the new games turn out when they are deemed as not being profitable enough anymore....

Those that bought into that "always online service" have no right to complain, because they very well knew what they were getting themselves into and that every virtual thing they bought with real world money is wasted effort when the server's being shut down.

Perhaps they'll learn from it, perhaps they won't.

Personally I have no interest in games as a "service", I want to "own" a product to play in 15 years time if I so desire, that has actual value to me.
Add editors and mod support to it and for multiplayer have LAN support and the ability to host my own internet multiplayer server and I have a high value product to enjoy until eternity and will buy that in an instant.

Please keep online only far far away. Imagine every game you own slowly heading to this inevitable point

Wait, spend the currency on what? What's the point if the game is closing down?

And here lies the dagger in pay as you play... You have no control over when a company will pull the plug. This business model is good for gaming companies but horrid for gamers. People have to learn to reject this business model or all future games will be moving towards this model.

I dont think I ever heard of this game, the name kiiiiiiiinda rings a bell buts thats it.

@Vividnightmare @telaros I guess the counter argument would be that they got entertainment for their money. When you pay to go to the movies or to an amusement park or something like that you don't actually get to own anything, you just pay to have fun.

@Vividnightmare @telaros Eventually someone with enough money will challenge the legality of these contracts and take it all the way to court rather than settling before trial, that's when things will get interesting. Until then I suggest boycotting EA and anyone else who follows similar practices.

Why does this happen on consoles? On PC people are still playing games that are almost 20 years old online like Unreal Tournament and Counterstrike to name a few. I mean it was crazy. Nevermind I was just told it had to do with dedicated servers. Why don't consoles have those? I still wanna play my games years down the line when I'm super old

It's kind of pathetic that we're in a time when a game that's 4 years old is an "older game" that needs to be retired.

This right here is why Microsoft got such a huge backlash with the original Xbox One designs. People don't want to see their games get shut down and become unplayable within the same consoles life span.

Not to mention the arrogance of suggesting that players spend any in game credit they still have. So they can what? Use what they buy for a whole month and a half? If EA had any sense of business ethics (they don't) they would refund anyone who currently has in-game currency and remove all micro-transactions from the game until it shuts down.

In other news Sim City 2013 will shut down in 3 months as well making way for Sim City 2014 Online 4eva...:(

This is what people support. And when their microtransactions show little returns they close it down and don;t even allow anyone to be refunded for money they were led to believe would be safe to spend on a game that was support to be supported by contractual agreement, which in EA's case they have total right to rewrite agreements anytime and cancel the game without notice, isn't bound to give you money back for grievances like this.

For every Madden and FIFA and Battlefield and Dead Space and MASS EFFECT you buy that supports microtransactions, the more EA keeps pushing it on you. Show them you don't want this with the only thing they give a damn about. Your hard earned, or freely given, money.

But, whatever. Just another quick cash-in that began to show smaller returns and was axed to place those people into other newer areas for another game they'll abandon when it doesn't make as much as they want it to.

honest tho if people haev in game currency they should refund money.. like stupidest comment if you have in game currency spend it before we shut down. Whats the point gonna spend my currenecy for something and then the games gone anywaysXD

GOG is digital only. It gives you complete control.

Take a look and see always on-line idiots. This right here is why constantly connected games is BAD. Once EA or Activision determine that a game is no longer fun they shut it down, never to be played again.

Granted Battleforge wasn't exactly game of the year, but if I wanted to still play it I should be able to. Just bring back dedicated servers and this wouldn't even be a problem

And this will be the fate of all of EA's Games sometime in the future, not just because "if EA dies" but because of a previous article where EA pretty much said "We dont make offline games anymore". If they no longer feel like supporting one of there "always on" games anymore then who ever bought said game and enjoyed it will be SOL.

EA wants us to use our in-game currency before it shuts down? I hate when EA steal our money. >:(

Hmmm I'd encourage people NOT to spend their in game currency and look into ways of getting their money back.

This is why I hate Peter Moore as well. He tries to spin off F2P games as not being a "pox" on gaming, but doesn't have a clue about gaming at all. A businessman yes, but not a gamer. Guy is a fool.

I myself dislike F2P games, I think they're casualised (real word? lol) junk to lure in extra cash and it's an effective system. Although I realise some people enjoy these games but that is just my opinion.

I'm actually considering cancelling my BF4 order because of my sheer dislike for EA. I pre-ordered BF4 Digital Deluxe and BF4 Premium for a ridiculous £94.98 and although it going to be good, Origin is horrible and buggy and I just don't like EA. The only issue then is, what popular shooter am I left to get? I already cancelled my CoD pre-order, even though I haven't played a CoD game for years. I can't get Titanfall because, well, it's on Origin.

There's **** all out there.

No popular casual shooters, unless of coursed I am forced to play BF4. Starting to look like my only choice.

Amazing is it not that EA doesn't actually care about their publicity.
