EA closing BattleForge

Publisher will shut down RTS on October 31; players encouraged to spend in-game currency before game closes.

Free-to-play real-time strategy game BattleForge will be shut down on October 31, Electronic Arts has announced.

No Caption Provided

"Today we bring sad news to the world of Nyn as the rift between our worlds is coming to a close, and with this we come to the unfortunate retirement of BattleForge," the company said in a statement.

"The decision to retire older games is never easy," the statement goes on. "We hope you've enjoyed playing BattleForge as much as we enjoyed making it and we wish to extend our sincerest thanks to all of our passionate and dedicated players for supporting BattleForge over the past four years."

EA encouraged users who still have a balance of in-game currency to spend it before the game is gone for good on Halloween. BattleForge is an online fantasy-themed real-time strategy game for the PC that borrows from the world of collectible-card games

The retirement of BattleForge comes after EA reportedly closed German developer EA Phenomic in July.

Closing and EA would be a dream come true but closing down another game even if its a EA game is never a happy thing and they do it far too often.

@Wrathesoul Im still bitter about them closing down Lord of the Rings Conquest severs a few years ago. That game had a huge following online, and the game was only out for a year. Also, they released an expansion pack of extra maps, than shut the servers down a month later. Big screw job by EA.

They should at least the decency to try to make this playable offline or give the means to people to make it an offline game. I actually played it and it was a great concept but ruined by microtransactions.

4 ½ years might not seem much in total, but a lot of people don't stick around that long. For some genres, like MMO's, offline RPG's, strategy games that's quite a short time. I've never heard of this F2P game, so I guess that's why it's being shut down.

That's one thing I really dislike with F2P games and other online-only games, that you don't decide when to stop playing it.

@lifeline81 frankly depends on people playing, as long as many people are playing it and microtransactions are rolling there is no reason to close it....otherwise games might get closed once the studio gets closed, but Bioware honestly isn't going anywhere soon, I'll wager it will quite a few years until SWTOR closes

@lifeline81 Is it a good game? and is it demanding in terms of computer spec? at the moment the only PC I have is a crappy laptop but can play Arma 2 on low settings.

@Mercgamer74 @lifeline81 Its awful to be honest. That was the biggest download/ lowest time played before uninstall ratio in my recent history. Its a lame immersion breaking MMO like WOW with lightsabres and in app purchases. Boring as hell

Glad I never spent money on this game. Of course, EA has a bad habit of shutting down online games. I would recommend that nobody spend money on an EA F2P game, because they do not care about you.

@Warlord_Irochi @balintcsikos @404FredNotFound @Jaw7765 I am playing NFS World. Just got an A class car, and honestly there are not that many races the better the car you get. The best way to actually play the game is with a class of a lower caliber. I think that takes away from the fun.

Oh yeah, I remember this game. It was actually pretty fun. I was able to get the entire first set of cards without spending any money. Just using the starting money wisely and working the system.

People who are complaining about this being an "online-only" game don't understand that this was inherently designed that way. It's not like Sim-City where it would have been fine playing offline.

@northArrow @Falconoffury I'd say both, F2P games are also require people to keep playing, love the game and start paying for it to unlock minor things.

It was actually a fun game, but looked too much pay to win.

This is the fate of every "online only" games or games "dependent on flowing cash" like the new F2P wave.

This article makes a very strong case against free-to-play business models. Imagine spending hundreds of dollars in a free to play game. You love the game, but it gets shut down due to low playerbase.

@Falconoffury depends you see even if you spend quite some money on it, you probably won't be playing it by the time it retires, since games usually retire looong time after their peak (when you will likely be playing it)....but yes, F2P and online only games aren't something for me either, I like to buy something which is permanent

@Falconoffury I would say it is closer to online only games like Northarrow said. Not all F2P games require an internet connection like most if not all EA's game does. I laugh at all the people that are currently spending money on The Simpson's f2p game right now... soon as ppl stop playing, down will come the game.

This is why games shouldn't be online only. Can still play all the games from the 90's and early 00's..

Retro gaming is gunna be shit.

Nice that the unborn ones won't have to play D3 though.

I am confused on why people think this is bad. Game is old and barely any people play it. Also it was F2P. So you spent money knowing well that the servers would come down one day. Same as any online game you play. This happens. You can't afford to keep servers running for every game. Facts.

@kargion The fact that anyone wants to play it is the reason why people care. The only time a game's servers should be shut down is when there are no log in's to the game in a month or two, then you can shut the game down. As long as there is at least one paying customer to your game playing, the resources should be made available to let that person play the game they paid money to play. If you want to kill off a game, put a subscription model on it to pay for the server and upkeep.

Otherwise, you owe it to your consumers to continue to support the game for however long ANYONE is willing and wanting to play it.

@Puck269 @kargion if you were an executive your company would go bankrupt in a year...and then none of us would have any games to begin with...not saying I agree with shutting the servers down, but without steps like these we would not have new game releases...and if you want to have nothing new to play just cos some one guy likes to play a 5 year old game go right ahead, but I like playing new stuff so I say shut that one guy down to be able to create something new

@pboontap So this is fine. Game is old and runs on servers. Same thing goes from all FPS games. Once the servers comes down no more MP and no one will play them.

Once again...proof that digitial can suck. If you had the game on a disc you could still play. I know it's an MMO, but still....I prefer disc based games. Especially with next gen games that will be 30-50gb per game or more! Hope you don't have any downloading cap on your internet service. Digital is ok for some people/situations. Not for everyone in the world tho. Too many variables. Oh well.

The official site says the same thing and nothing else. I played battleforge, even have some rare cards in it.

Damn it, there really should be a law or something that in case of a server shutdown, the company must allow all of their paying customers to download a local version of the game with Single player/Lan/local multiplayer/P2P support at least.

Good thing I have not spend any more cash on online only games for years. They have to die eventually, and then you are screwed.
