EA considering closure of Harry Potter developer

Bright Light studio in danger of being shuttered in effort to reduce development costs and centralize development across EA's UK operations.

EA Bright Light Guildford, the studio behind recent Harry Potter film adaptations, Create, and the Hasbro line of licensed board game adaptations, may be on its way out.

Harry Potter has wrapped, and it appears so too has EA Bright Light.
Harry Potter has wrapped, and it appears so too has EA Bright Light.

Originally reported by GamesIndustry.biz, an EA spokesperson confirmed for GameSpot that a "formal consultation process" with employees regarding the closure of operations has begun, with a portion of the personnel being considered for positions in other EA studios in the UK.

This proposed change would be in order to "centralize development on future projects, reduce development costs, and allow for better knowledge and talent sharing within the organization."

EA opened its Guildford-based studio in 1995 under the name EA UK (in 2007, it was renamed EA Bright Light). With the acquisition of the Peter Molyneux-cofounded Bullfrog Productions in 1995, the studio inherited a catalog of classic titles like Populous, Dungeon Keeper, Syndicate, and Theme Park.

The studio later shifted its focus to creating games for younger audiences and family-oriented entertainment. These include EA's film adaptations for J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter franchise, which have generally received a tepid critical response. The closure of the Bright Light studio would leave Criterion as EA's only UK-based development house.

Earlier this month, Codemasters also targeted its Guildford-based studio for closure. That operation's most recent project was the futuristic shooter Bodycount, which received a lackluster critical reception.

Guildford has some of the best game developers (Criterion Entertainment), this news does send a bit of a shock. Hopefully their would be any more after hit spin offs of Harry Potter, they should at least keep the studio running.

Well, I've never played the Potter games (And judging from the comments below on how awful they are, I probably never will.), but my family and I have enjoyed the Hasbro game adaptations, quirky as they are. However, I don't think there are too many board games left that would meta-morph into a video game.

In other words: "With the Potter series finished and no farther books and movies, then we can not milk the franchise dry until it bleeds and continue to milk it without permission from the original creator. Although we might hire assassins to do that for us so that we can milk the franchise dry at a later date without being hindered" The only good Harry Potter game was Lego Harry Potter, and with the sequel coming out then it might be as good as the previous one.

I wonder how profitable these games are to begin with. I mean, we all know 98% of movie video games blow, but we as cultured GameSpotters are in the minority of the video-gaming community. There must be SOME profit to these types of video games to warrant their creation to begin with. But now hopefully we'll see less.

Their games for Harry Potter are such garbage. This isn't a surprise.

When light-hearted lego variants of the same subject material vastly trump your projects, it's probably time to close shop. I'd say the same about Rocksteady if they made something worse than Lego Batman (read, they certainly didn't).

what is sad is Harry Potter is a rich brand, they could have made some great games and been like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, creating worlds and environments for fans...sad, because the games could have been so much better.

Lousy development costs are mostly the reason why this happens.

Good. Their adaptations of Deathly Hallows were horrible to say the last. They should've left those games to the previous developers.
