EA drops Plants vs. Zombies 2 lawn mower microtransaction tax

EA calls the addition of a fee for lawn mowers a "test," which has now ended.

No Caption Provided

EA has taken a lot of flak recently for its microtransaction model. First, there was the highly unpopular "lawnmower tax" in Plants vs. Zombies 2, which required players to repurchase any lawnmowers lost in the course of play. Previously lawn mowers would respawn at the start of each new level. Then Peter Molyneux vocally expressed his disdain for the pay-or-wait mechanic in the recently released free-to-play version of Dungeon Keeper.

But EA seems to be listening to the criticism. Today, in addition to partnering with GOG.com to give away the original Dungeon Keeper for free, they also removed the lawnmower payments from PvZ 2.

A representative called the addition of a fee for replacing the lawnmowers a "test."

"We are always testing new features in Plants vs. Zombies 2. The lawnmower feature noted by some players was part of a small-scale test and is now over."

Other changes to Plants vs. Zombies 2, such as the more linear level progression, are still in effect. But we'll be on the lookout for more "tests" that may be conducted in PvZ 2 in the future.

Despite what the media said upon its release PVZ 2 is a grind and what once had a quirky suburban style and humour, was dumbed down with the addition of time travel, a talking car and more cuddly graphics, clearly an attempt to bastardise the franchise to appeal to kids i.e. the ones more likely to max out mum and dads credit card details on these despicable game taxes, and worthless digital trinkets. F*** you EA F*** you very much !

Exactly. They ruined PvZ completely. The original was a fantastic game and the was an exhausting, greedy chore of a "game".

What kind of a test is it when you start charging for a key feature of the game? More like a robbery they conducted, since the poor people who payed for that stuff and are now finding out that they didn't have to were essentially robbed.

@outlawoftorn True, but no one twisted their arms to click the buy button either. Everyone loves to gripe about MT's, yet it's up to everyone to buy or ignore, no one is forcing people to buy them. Don't blame the companies, they are in bushines to make money, period. I have never had a hard time saying no to MT's, if I think it's not worth it, I don't buy it. If it's a pay or wait game, I don't play it. Simple.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes consumers should be wise on what they do or do not purchase. But to an extent the onus is on the company that they fairly treat their consumers (i.e. don't introduce unnecessary costs if you are just going to take them away a few days later).

Saying that its not their problem because they are a business is in my opinion not a valid argument. It is exactly their problem, they have been given a right to sell to the consumer and participate in an industry which is governed by rules of fair practice. If the consumer finds that he or she is being unfairly treated then they have a right to call the company out on that.

Or in other words; yet another failed attempt from EA to follow a successful trend set by other, smarter, more creative developers. We saw it with Medal of Honor, we're seeing it with Dungeon Keeper and Plants vs Zombies, and in a few months time we'll see it with that MOBA they're whipping another slave team of programming monkeys into making. Because that's pretty much all EA do these days. Aside from a couple of gems last generation like Dead Space, they just sit on FIFA and Madden and wait for the next break out business model or innovation to appear and jump on the bandwagon like a cancerous growth.

We'll probably be back here sometime later this year to see them fumble around trying to exploit early access. Watch this space.

@TheNightMammoth Actually, FIFA's next on the block -- kick the ball out of bounds? That'll be a dollar to replace it. ...but you can play without one for 10 hours (i.e., Jogging Simulator 2014).

The thing with EA is that they don't care. They'll try again and again with every single game to find a way to rip us off.

They don't try to please the customers by doing nice free stuff first, their politic is to try "if they can slip one past us" and see if it works, if it doesn't they take a lot of heat and probably think "too bad, let's try something else" and they take a step back and give some sort of apology or compensation... And then they ask themselves why gamers hate their guts...

So what? They'll pull the same shit in their next game.

How many times have you given them the benefit of the doubt, only to be screwed over later?

Here's my simple solution: Boycott EA.

EA's business practices as of late are truly disgusting. I'm well aware that they are a company and are well within their right to do whatever it takes to make money, but the practice of milking their customers for every penny they can get is getting real old, real fast. On top of that, their constant backtracking when criticism is levied against them is just plain insulting. I understand that people make mistakes and will fix said mistakes when criticized all in the name of improvement, but with EA it seems that the lessons are never learned. The company just seems to be looking for more and more ways it can get their hands into pockets of unsuspecting consumers. It's sneaky and underhanded and outright scary. I know that EA probably isn't going anywhere due to how many people will still purchase their products, but I'd like to say that perhaps the gaming community needs to ask themselves when enough will be enough.

What bullshit. Almost every "update" they make to this game makes it worse. The only update I've enjoyed is the boss fight, and we only got one.

I like the game a lot, but it really turns into a grind-fest about midway through. It's intolerable. When it first launched it wasn't too bad, but they figured out how to squeeze a few more bucks out of you.

Well, not me. I refuse to pay a dime. I'd prefer to buy it outright the way I did with the first game. Until they let me do that I'm paying nothing. Hear that, EA?

Such bullshit.

Its sad because there are a lot of improvements in PvZ 2. The graphics have seen a huge upgrade and the different settings, plants and even the addition of a storyline make it interesting.

I would have gladly paid $10 to play this on my laptop or even my phone. But those microtransactions grossly inhibit any progression without paying up.

I uninstalled it after the first 4 missions.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Its true, you can beat it without paying.

But I would only consider it enjoyable if I found heavy grinding via failing many missions multiple times in order to build up enough gold coins to use one of your 3 power ups to be fun.

@TheChosenOne_NL The sole reason PvZ 1 was doable is because PopCap developed it before being purchased by EA.

PvZ 2 is NOT completable without grinding or purchasing content. I don't care how good you think you are.

I'm convinced the only reason PvZ 2 is even remotely more enjoyable than Dungeon Crawler is because PopCap is still developing it.

Here's an idea charge one "fee" for a game and give away DLC for free. Stop nickel and diming what customers you DO have. Learn from industry veteran's like CD Projekt RED who give away their enhanced editions for um FREE. Their games are good so they can do that.

=/ Free DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition por favor!
