EA interested in THQ assets - Report

Mass Effect publisher joins Warner Bros. as potential bidder for bankrupt publisher's franchises and studios; assets will be sold piecemeal.

188 Comments

Mass Effect and FIFA publisher Electronic Arts has joined media giant Warner Bros. as a potential bidder for bankrupt publisher THQ's assets. Writing from inside a bankruptcy court hearing today, Distressed Debt Investing reported that not only is EA interested in THQ's franchises and studios, but the publisher "has completed site visits" as well.

No Caption Provided

An EA representative declined to comment.

It was also revealed today in the court proceedings that stalking-horse bidder Clearlake Capital Group has agreed to allow bids for individual THQ titles. Previously, the firm was only planning to accept all-or-nothing bids, something creditors and US Trustee Roberta DeAngelis took issue with.

Last week, THQ banker Sam Greene revealed there were five active potential bidders for THQ's franchises and studios. EA and Warner Bros. are the only two named thus far, though Ubisoft had previously expressed interest in the company's games, with CEO Yves Guillemot saying in November, "They have good things."

What's more, Clearlake also moved today to extend its deadline for competing bids for its $60 million offer until January 15, an extension of five days over the previous January 10 end date. However, US Bankruptcy Court Judge Mary Walrath did not approve this timeline, saying it remained too short.

Parties later in the day agreed on a January 22 auction date, during which THQ assets can be purchased individually.

Please let someone other than EA buy THQ. I'm so sick of EA buying good developers, taking all their IPs, shoving out complete garbage so they can gouge customers, and then pretending how good and wonderful they all are while absolutely everyone knows better. It's making me sick. All I have to say is this: not another one, please.

Is it really that bad that EA is bidding on THQ? Honestly, better them than Activision or *shudders* Zynga.

i would hate to spend about 10$ for a freakin' gun in the next saints row or even 20$ to get someone like rob van dam in the next wwe title (if ea doesn't kill it)

Well there are two ways to think about this:

*** ONE*** EA with some of the worst management and intrusive ceos will take some of the best IP's from a financially failed developer THQ and give if the quick cash treatment that makes it- MOM friendly and puts a moutain dew 'extreme' label' so that it is hip for the youngsters- that it has so many other franchises, until it is milked dry of anything that was special about it. And then add in layers of obstacles (Origin, 1rst day dlc, media manipulation, buying out competitive developers and then closing them down, fees) that make it impossible to enjoy simply buying a game and getting to play it.

OR

**** TWO*** A publishing company, EA, who's heyday has come and gone, who has been voted worst company in america 4/12 by forbes magazine, most hated company by Consumer Union’s Consumerist blog 2012, has smartly decided to acquire some of the most beloved and well developed IP's from financially mismanaged THQ. A move that is future forward with the intent to turn around its image/brand and be well defended for this coming next generation, by putting out quality titles with no strings attached, and allowing developers to a create games with original stories not ones designed by pollsters.

I really, really, truly hope it is TWO, please be TWO, dammit EA choose two you dumb chits.

Wonder what most gamers think it be.

So, the first 3 interested parties were announced, all 3 of them being utter crap, one worse than the other.

Warner Bros. -> Games for Windows Live

UbiSoft -> uPlay Launcher

EA -> Origin

All 3 of them believe in "gaming as a service" for the future and show no sign of removing their worthless DRM systems or returning to selling games as products which we own after buying (to enjoy whenever we want).

Who are the remaining 2 interested parties ?

Just so I know if I can scratch THQ and their development studios off my list of once good studios and never buy anything from them ever again. (just like the 3 already mentioned up there)

If Activision is not among the two remaining interested parties it can theoretically only get better from here on, because the worst companies are already listed - I still have a bit of hope left for THQ, don't disappoint us.

@iamzeroxx The only problem here is people like you, at least look up the word entitlement and its definition before you parrot it back out. I swear to God some users read one article on gamespot that was questionable in context and used the word , and now its like its in fashion. I hate EA, and I am entitled to that opinion, and that has nothing to do with any kind of entitlement complex. Entitlement means that someone feels something is owed to them by someone, generally without cause. Yet some hack writer on this site gets offended that people disliked Mass Effect 3 because of the ending, and now I have to hear from every idiot like iamzeroxxx "stop acting entitled". Why dont you please stop acting like you misplaced your brain.

No...no...NOOO!!!! This could be THE worst outcome that could happen to THQ. The publisher of amazing games (Stalker, Metro, Company of Heroes, etc. etc.) is going to be bought by the worst company in the gaming industry... What terrible news...

EA publishes great games. Mass Effect, Dead Space, Battlefield, Dragon Age.. etc. They have marketing muscle and a tremendous amount of resources. I think it would be a good idea. And once again people keep condemning EA, this entitlement complex people have is baffling to me. I am not going to say EA is perfect, they have had their share of hiccups but at this point I am pretty sure people haven't a clue what they are complaining about.

I quite like E.A they've done some good stuff. Dead space was great, fifa is great every year, Battlefield is good and their frostbite 2 engine is nice. I also like Ubisoft, they've done some great stuff too.....So for me it doesn't matter who buys up THQ. At least their games will still be churned out instead of just being left to die. I see it as win win for us gamers. But hey, if you don't like E.A or Ubisoft or any other gaming publisher/developer, don't buy their games, simple. I'm not the one who'll be missing out :)

For the love of all things holy, please do not let EA get their hands on anything else; just because they destroy everything they touch doesn't mean they should get more!

The only thing I care about here is Saint's Row. I hope whoever gets it, be it EA or whoever else, just gives Volition plenty of resources and then gets out of the way and let those guys do what they do. I konw it won't go down like that, but I can HOPE!

Do you really think Volition will be working on that series if EA gets it? Really? Perhaps 15% of the Volition staff will work on it for the first game, then EA will get a subpar developer to make the next one cheaply but with pretty graphics, market it heaps, make a huge profit, but destroy everything that made the series popular. There is a long history to proove my statement.

@Darth_Kane If by that you mean make everything multiplayer focused, F2P, pay to play online, always online DRM, or just take a poo on the franchise and tell us to smell it then sure. At least UPlay rewards you for completing arbitrary achievements with ingame items.
