EA Promises Not to Remove Games From EA Access' Free Games Vault

Peter Moore says the Vault will offer triple-A games and pledges not to remove games that have been added to it.

No Caption Provided

Once something has been added to the library of games that EA Access subscribers can freely play, the company will not remove it, according to Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore.

Speaking with CVG, Moore made it clear that Access members won't find themselves suddenly unable to continue playing a game because it's been removed from the "Vault" of free games. "I think one of the key things is that once a game goes into the Vault it stays there, it's not going to be taken out, that's a commitment we've made," he said.

The first batch of games to be added to the Vault are FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2, and Battlefield 4. For $5 per month (or $30 per year), members can play these games as much as they want on Xbox One. In addition, they'll receive other benefits like early access to upcoming games and discounts on DLC.

"We have to make decisions along that way, so there's no template, like 30 days after a game ships it goes into the Vault" -- Peter Moore

"The Vault will be substantial," according to Moore, who said more games--including triple-A games--will be added over time. However, new additions won't come on a set schedule--EA will decide when to add games individually. "New game additions will be determined by franchise and timing," Moore explained. "We have to make decisions along that way, so there's no template, like 30 days after a game ships it goes into the Vault."

In other words, Access members won't be able to avoid buying a new EA game because they know it will be added to the Vault after a certain amount of time.

It's worth noting that the terms of service listed on the EA Access website provide EA with the right to remove games from the Vault. From a legal standpoint, it would be surprising if that were not included in the TOS, and this doesn't necessarily signal an intent to remove games. Should a game ever be removed for some reason (or online services for a Vault game be shut down), EA will make an announcement 30 days in advance.

At least for the time being, EA Access will only be available on Xbox One. Sony has said it turned down the opportunity to offer it on PlayStation platforms because "it does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect." That point has come under fire in light of the pricing on certain rentals through Sony's new PlayStation Now streaming service, which recently entered open beta. Moore was asked about Sony's stance, but he was hesitant to say much. "It's tough for me to comment on Sony's comments," he said. "I think they made themselves pretty clear."

EA Access is currently available in beta, with a wider launch coming sometime "soon."

I have a feeling they may revise that statement. Imagine being able to play 3 or 4 successive Madden games one right after the other. The jig would officially be up -as "they" say. J/k

I'm enjoying my E.A. access atm. Hopefully they will add another new game soon. (I can't wait to play Dragon Age a week early)

I'm tired of those ponies complaining on anything not available in their beloved PS like they did with Titanfall, Forza, DR3, EA Access, etc.

Guys you know that you're also have the right to cancel your subscription anytime you wish, heck then EA going to lose the most if they try to upset their customers (us).

<< LINK REMOVED >> First of all, anytime you use words like "pony" or "xbot" to childishly denigrate others, you immediately lose all credibility regardless of your argument. Secondly, there are gamers on both sides that complain about not being able to play exclusives for the platform(s) they don't own. It's unfortunate that you fanboys can't get along well considering how similar all of you behave.

You guys sincerely need to try and separate your sense of self worth from the gaming platforms you worship. It isn't healthy to take every negative comment about a game, system, or policy so personally. I honestly believe that once you achieve this you will be well on your way to recovery from the rigors of fanboyism.

I would pay $30 a month for a gaming subscription service, if it included the entire library of steam... (this is just ludicrous and arrogant)

Like you'd want 50% of those games at any price...

Quite funny that Sony said no on value grounds while having no value problems with the price they sell retail games for on PSN.

If they stay true to their word, keep expanding the catalogue every year, and never remove anything the value of this service will only increase. I hope other big publishers like 2K & Ubisoft do the same and they all eventually bring it over to PC. Activision doesn't really have much of a back catalog anymore.

Do you have to stream the games or do you download them? If you download them then it's actually not that bad.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Its downloading which makes more sense than streaming. You waste some time the night before downloading it so that you don't have any down time when you're awake playing it. Streaming a game doesn't make as much sense when you have hard drives that can store the game for an uninterrupted experience.

I for one am loving the new service,at $2.50 a month you cannot find a better value, hell you cannot even rent a game on ps now for 3 hours for that price. Sony made a big mistake by not getting ea access, and all because they have greed in their eyes.

It's only a good value to those who are patient. There is no chance in hell that Madden 15, NBA Live 15, FIFA 15 and other sports games come to the "vault" on release date. EA will wait to bring the new games to the "vault" after a few months or so I'd think.

I have the beta, for $30/year it's great. Amazing all the freeloaders that do nothing but complain and complain about everything, then when a company actually comes with something the Obamaphone generation can afford, they then complain about it some more. It's almost like they're just complaining to complain.

I think Peter Moore went off-script with these comments. If the lawyers and marketing folks aren't lambasting him for saying this, then they're hoping that we'll have forgotten these words when the first set of games inevitably does get removed from the Vault.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Why would they remove them? Battlefield 4 might be pretty pointless to download once they turn the servers off but they could still leave it up there. I'm sure they will turn the whole vault off once the XBoxTwo (or whatever) comes out but that's closing, not removing.

This is what I keep seeing in the comments for stories on this cool upcoming service:

"What EA is doing is evil, I don't trust them with my huge $5 investment for multiple digital rentals a month! And what if they take some games off the servers, (albeit games I don't own and paid little to rent), even though they said they will rarely do that?! Ooh, I wish I could throw down rational complaints, other than masking my disappointment of not being able to participate b/c I don't own the right platform, so instead I put up concerns about how this must suck b/c I am overly paranoid about EA."

----The sore fanboy masses

EA has ticked me off many times in the past, but this time it sounds like they have a really good idea. Keep an open mind, or even simply buy an Xbox One and solve your jealousy issues.

Dunno, since this was an idea originally conceived by EA which was offered to both MS and Sony, it would have been EA that set the price.

The thing that EA are acutely aware of, is that as EAA is a Subscription based service they cannot afford to spew out the BS, as they will then run the risk of loosing potentially Millions of $$$ as 'We' will simply cancel our subscriptions, as ultimately if we don't like it, we wont continue to subscribe.... Simple really.

Personally, i think that when EA launches to the General MS community, that it will be a massive success, i have to admit that i'm looking forward to it, and to see how it evolves.

<< LINK REMOVED >> & @mattcake Even if that promise occupied 1 cubic foot of gas, we're also *only* talking about 0.01 lbs of helium. If said 1 cubic foot was liquid helium, we're now talking about 8.8 lbs of helium. If said 1 cubic foot was of solid helium, we're now talking about 0.72 lbs of helium. Helium does not naturally exist in a solid state considering that it remains liquid at absolute zero despite being in a zero momentum state, so it's weight will remain a constant. Considering that Helium presently costs ~$5 / pound, if one were to assume that the promise from EA were to occupy 1 cubic foot, that means that said promise may be worth 5 cents - $44 depending on the state of said helium. So, as kujel was alluding to, phase of matter is quite important.

They wont be removed because I would place a fairly hefty bet that the 'Vault' and its contents are now stored on MSs servers and not EAs, and that this wouldn't of been the case had Sony accepted the offer of EAA.

Dependant on the contractual details, MS provide Host services for millions of businesses around the globe and could easily provide EA with their own dedicated storage which would still remain the property of EA, MS would simply be acting as the host and ultimately would in turn be responsible for its integrity, while the storage and its contents would be the sole property of the 'Client' (EA).

I honestly didn't think this would be the case and I'm still not convinced they won't remove certain titles at certain points, there will be a time when they have to think of how many games they can add to the library before they are actually losing money, if too much of EAs library is on the service there will be no need for most people to buy any of their back catalog or big releases like Battlefield when people know if they wait they will get it nearly free.

Also anualized games often have their servers shut down after a few years, it happened with may EA sports titles and will happen again and I doubt they will keep Madden 25,26,27 on their all at the same time, the same goes for many of their sports titles, so the question really remains, how many games will they add per year? how do they plan on keeping customers interested by adding new titles and at the same time not cut into profits by giving away too much for too little in return, I think a lot of this should have been addressed before the program was announced.
