EA Wii U games require Origin account for online play

New Electronic Arts policy document reveals players will need Origin account to play EA title's online; "Nintendo Network ID" revealed.

An updated Electronic Arts privacy policy document confirms that Wii U gamers wishing to play EA titles online will need a Origin account to do so.

No Caption Provided

Additionally, by signing up for a Origin account for Wii U, players must agree to allow EA to collect their email address, Mii information, friend list, country, language, and date of birth.

Further, the document spells out "Nintendo Network ID." Nintendo has previously confirmed that Friend Codes from the Wii era would return for the Wii U, but it is not clear if "Nintendo Network ID" is a new name for these.

A Nintendo representative was not immediately available for comment.

Having an EA Origin account to play EA games online is not an exclusive requirement for the Wii U. The same policy is in place for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gamers. In all cases and for all platforms, players will not need to agree to share their credit card number or other personal financial account information.

Launched in June 2011, Origin is a replacement for the EA Store, and it serves as a hub and infrastructure for downloading and playing PC games, as well as ordering boxed products for other platforms. It boasts 12 million users and more than 50 publishing partners.

I know, that's why I'm unaffected. The one and only EA game I've ever bought was the Mass Effect series.

@abHS4L88 I've seen you before and, although I try to stay unbiased in these types of things, you have to be without doubt the most obvious Nintendo fanboy I have ever seen in these parts. Not that your any worse than other fanboys, your just... unique.

How so? Yes I defend them, but because they get a lot of crap/hate for a bunch of uncalled for stuff, things that have been true of the industry for over a decade, people are suddenly using as reasons to hate on Nintendo and I find it really stupid. There are valid arguments against Nintendo, that they are addressing yet they're still getting crap for it.

If that hate was directed towards Sony/Microsoft, I would defend them too because I like those companies. Hell I have no intention on getting a Vita yet I still defend it because people are giving it crap for dumb reasons like the pricing and comparing it to the 3DS (I own a 3DS but find it dumb to hate on the Vita just because it's currently doing better).

Funny because I was just telling someone else how only a fanboy would call someone else a fanboy just for defending something/someone they supported.

I'm physically, emotionally, intellectually and mentally beyond puberty by a good many years, so I don't have this incessant compulsion to hate all things EA or consider them "The Worst Company in America".

I also think companies like Union Carbide are a little further up the "evil scale" than anybody who makes video games, but hey, that's just me.

Is it a slight inconvenience? Maybe.

Is it a deal breaker? Not hardly.

It would be awesome if games registered to your account could be played from anywhere similar to Steam. So if I got a multiplat game on the Wii-U I could play it on PC and have cloud saving to pick up on either system.

I wouldn't personally use it because it would still look better on PC and I wouldn't buy it elsewhere, but a cool idea.

I like the idea Sony has with the Sony Smash Bros game where you get a copy for Vita with a PS3 version. That needs to be done more.

@kiramasaki At least you're using ONE code per console and not one code per game.

Seriously, even as a fan of the Wii, even I have to admit the previous system is a mess.

Not that I was getting a Wii U in the first place, why would Nintendo let this happen? They already have a lot to prove with their online service as is. This will just make it even more unappealing and inconvenient for gamers. Terrible move.

@amari24 Because if they want EA games to be playable online they have to agree to EA's terms. PERIOD. Now it's common place to play EA games online. Even if you just play the single player, the game signs you into Origin automatically.

@Vodoo @amari24 To be honest, EA might be retarded but I'm sure they would have caved it if meant losing a potential 20% of there sales and even more than 20% profits. But, I wasn't there so I can't say for sure.

Are you guys serious? What about this is news worthy aside from now knowing that Wii U has online infrastructure? I would read more comments but I'm not sure I would be able to stand the absolutely pointless hate of EA, but majority still enjoy being held hostage by MS for every online game on Xbox 360...see the irony there!?! They too have your email, d.o.b, etc...same stuff EA wants...go figure!!!

Jump on the hate wagon but have absolutely no idea why you are even hating, mob mentality still runs rampant and shows no sign of slowing down or people actually thinking for themselves.

@SavageEvil One big difference between Microsoft or Sony having all your information then EA is that M&S are the console manufacturers and the service providers of their online infrastructure. EA is just some third party coming in and trying to keep their hand on your wallet. They have no business doing any of what they do because the online service is already provided for by the hardware makers. We don't need anything from EA other than the game to play, that's it.

@Vodoo Huh?!? What are you talking about, EA sells you games and services, they are still a service and when you buy digital they have to collect their money do they not? Businesses require some sort of identification so you can log in to their servers, which is a good thing, considering I see how many a$$holes there are on FM4 who like to screw up races...simple record and send video to get your behind banned or something...So I don't see anything wrong with using Origin at least EA are taking care of making sure that you input your information instead of them getting it second hand from MS where screw ups can happen. Figure your stuff out before you come on here defending mob mentality nonsense ok.

@PeterTechGuy @SavageEvil @Vodoo Hehe, Agree on this unfortunately. But yes every online service and company has your info. Google definitely gathers basically anything you do on the internet especially if you use Chrome etc etc. Do I care, no not really. If big corporations want your info they will find it one way or the other. This way EA don't need to buy info from other companies but just collect them themselves. Can we stop it, again nope. No way in hell this will not happen. Been happening forever already.

@SavageEvil @Vodoo Agree with SavageEvil, most companies nowadays collect your information, Steam do that too. If you don't know already, you might be surprise that Google collects your search result too, yes, including every single link you clicked on their website.

But who am I kidding, it's EA, and it's cool to hate them.

One more thing on the list of EA failliure ... but the thing is ... many people still buy their stuff because they are still here ...so people complain but in the end, swallow their pride and all and buy the game with the season pass and all other crap ( I don't know I never bought a EA game)

I get why they want people to use Origin, because digital distribution is popular. But in this case they're needlessly forcing it onto console gamers who don't want to have to sign into another account just to play the game. So unless they're seriously interested in multiplayer, they're not going to bother to play it online. I know I sure won't.

It's become a detriment to their games. I don't want to buy a PC game with an EA logo on it because I know it'll require Origin.

@alecrast82 Well, I'm certainly not signing up for an origin account. That's a high price for a service I'm not particularly fond of in the first place. Know that this is the price for online gameplay, it's certainly enough to shift me if I'm on the fence.

For instance, MoH:Warfighter. Was thinking about it and now I'm fairly certain that it's not going to happen since I'd call the multiplayer busted on that front. I haven't been interested in an EA multiplayer experience in a long time anyway.

Wow, EA's mgmt is nuts! Why would consumers be required to release their private information such as their e-mail address and friend list to be able to play a game?

The whole point of consoles was easy of use. By making consoles more and more like PC gaming, which requires Origin (another failure compared to Steam), EA is taking one key advantage that consoles had - pop in a game and you are ready to go!

After being voted the worst company in America, you'd think EA would work on improving its image in the eyes of gamers. LOL! They have no idea how to build a respected brand, do they? Money grabbing, marketing scamming organization that thinks they are Big Brother now!
