The cost of the original cartridge should have no effect on the price of the digital version. This is classic Nintendo, milking every last bit from their fans as they can. Their regular pricing for SNES games is already pretty out of touch with today's digital market, but to exceed that price for this game should be taken as an insult to anyone who considers themselves loyal to the brand.

@SlimeSwayze listen while i do agree on some level that 10 is a bit steep for this game as a DL, it should have been available DAY 1 once NOA made an online store.

i do not blame peeps at all that went the emulator route waiting for NOA to get off their asses and put something in the store that the gaming community has wanted since forever. Having it available alot earlier may have helped them, now....most peeps that wanted to play this game already have.

AND HOW can you not put in the full series when FREE TRANSLATION PATCHES are floating around....

and before any of u wii u fanboys scream that i am being biased...SONY has done a bad job too. Offering sukoden but not suikoden 2 is just ASININE. but NOA deserves more heat cuz they put shit out like 10 yard fight and think its all good.

@racerxgundam Completely agree with you. I guess Nintendo's just trying to cash-in on the good-will of some of their customers. But honestly, if I can get better results playing this game on an emulator, why even bother with the Virtual Console release?

I hate to kick dirt on NOA but i will give them this small jab...

they have completely botched their video library online...to be honest they have prolly the best back library and have posted such garbage.

I remember reading once how NOA claimed that the music licenses associated were too costly to reacquire. Its too bad that they finally put up some of their holy grail material in the death throes of the system.

NOA should not only have had this game available..but the whole series and some of their better imports with the freaking 5 cent translation patch attached to them....

its a bit too little to late for me to care too much. I hope you guys at some point turn it around but this should have been TITLE #1 for download like several years ago

If you actually want to play a genuine legal copy, your options are buying a $300 console that so far not many people want and not many third party devs even support... plus 10 for the game of course, or hunt down a SNES cart which will run you AT LEAST $150 if not more and a SNES system + controller which varies wildly but the first eBay search came up with 20 bucks. Sadly the SNES wins both in total cost and factoring in the library of games.

Obviously Earthbound is not a system seller but I'd sooner take the SNES over the Wii U. Earthbound is my favorite RPG ever made.

It's only legal if you're the one making the digital back up. Downloading the rom from a website claiming it's your digital back up for your physical copy is illegal. BUT WHO CARES LOL WE ALL DO IT ANYWAY BBL GONNA PLAY SOME DOLPHIN

Yes, the only other exception is if the game/ROM/music/movie has gone to public domain. This obviously does not apply to this game as someone still has an active copyright as evidenced by Nintendo re-releasing it.

No they are not. The emulator is legal and having a copy of the ROM is ONLY legal if you own an original cartridge/ROM. You are only allowed to legally have a "backup ROM" if you own the original. Check the Digital Millennium Act.

@Squirrelatwar Because Nintendo is trying to boost Wii U sales, understandably. 3DS is doing fine, but I suspect they will bring it to the handheld a little later.

Why would you want it on a handheld? Games like EarthBound deserve to be played on a TV set.

Good. Now I hope the price of the original SNES game will go down a lot because there is no reason for earthbound to be going for hundreds of dollars, it's a very common game.

If it were common, then it would be cheap. Simple laws of supply and demand apply here. There are more people willing to pay a price for the game than there are enough copies to bring the price down. Very simple economic theory.

Then explain why Final Fantasy VII was going for over $80 for a while, yet it sold over 10 million copies.

@GSJones1994 Here's a thought...because MOST of those 10 million people actually KEPT the game, thus making it rare to find?

Yes, if there were only a limited number on the market and demand was high, the price would be high. Doesn't matter how many were sold initially, it matters how many are available for sale now and how many are willing to pay the price. There are obviously more copies of FF VII available than Earthbound since it can be had at a lower price.

The other conditions that factor in are popularity, condition, and current fads. But the quantity available for sale is probably the biggest determinate of price.

10 dollars it's too expensive...You have better games on gog drm free for 6.

Maybe if they give you all the saga of mother for $10 it will be ok but only the last one with nothing new...come on

$10 is pretty expensive for a downloadable game, I think I go buy the much cheaper $200 cartridge instead.

@OuroborosChoked If you like Nintendo then you already have a Wii U most likely. ..and it's a massive step for Nintendo to even be able to bring this to North America again. I'm cautiously optimistic that if this sells well enough we could get a true sequel.

@Space_Paranoids @OuroborosChoked This reply cracks me up.

"If you like Nintendo then you already have a Wii U most likely."

Most likely, not a lot of people like Nintendo, then. Lawl.

"it's a massive step for Nintendo to even be able to bring this to North America again."

It's a file. They just hit "upload". It's already translated. Hell, they could've just stolen a rom from the internet and published that. Massive step my ass! Lawl #2.

"if this sells well enough we could get a true sequel"

You mean the Mother 3 that already exists but Nintendo never bothered to bring it to the US? The one you can get translation patches for? Or like the original game that they translated and left abandoned on the shelf and you can now purchase as a reproduction cart (or download)? Sequel indeed. Lawl #3.

@GladChimer @slayerSS-3 I have a Wii U, I have the original Earthbound cart and I'm going to buy this...That's just me. $10 seems fair for such a fantastic game, I can equate that monetary value with over 30 hours of my time that I can now play laying in bed or even on the toilet if I wish. I also want to send the message to Nintendo that I as a fan do want a sequel.
