LAS VEGAS--Though the PlayStation 4 probably won't be announced for some time, speculation is growing about two other gaming platforms from Sony. Sony Ericsson's "PlayStation Phone," likely to be called the Xperia Play, has been reported on for months courtesy of photo and video leaks. Then there's the PSP2, the development kits for which reportedly have been in game makers' hands since last year.

SCE CEO Kaz Hirai may be on hand to show off the latest in all things PlayStation.
SCE CEO Kaz Hirai may be on hand to show off the latest in all things PlayStation.

Whether either platform will be revealed at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show remains to be seen. Though games are an important part of Sony's business, they remain just a part. At CES, the company typically focuses on its other myriad electronic products, often throwing in a performance from a Sony Music artist--last year it was Taylor Swift--to add some glamour to its presentation.

What will this year's CES stage show have in store? Look for 3D video and gaming to be a big focus, as they were last year. Also expect some lip service to be given to the PlayStation Move, the motion-sensing system that launched last September. Last but not least, Sony will likely update the world on its ambitious scheme to extend the PlayStation Store's video offerings to Internet-enabled HDTVs and Blu-ray players and to PCs. As in years past, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer will host the event, with an appearance from Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai also likely.

[4:52] In what might be a CES first, Sony is starting its conference several minutes ahead of the scheduled start time of 5:00.

[4:53] First up, a 3D video selection. "Ladies and gentlemen, put on your 3D glasses."

[4:54] A tasteful montage of concentric circles floats onscreen, accompanied by ambient electronic music.

[4:54] The circles then collapse into a single dot, which explodes into a supernova of small globules, each with an image inside.

[4:56] Cue montage of 3D scenes from various nature documentaries and films, including the upcoming Green Hornet (staring Seth Rogen).

[4:56] Then it's time for 3D images of attractive multiethnic models holding Sony products, ranging from cameras to computers to the PlayStation 3.

[4:56] PlayStation Move is up next, with scenes of 3D gaming that include Gran Turismo 5 and Killzone 3.

The press conference begins…with jets! In 3D!
The press conference begins…with jets! In 3D!

[4:58] Now kids and their oh-so-cool parents sit down to watch a series of music videos in 3D, including selections from Shakira and Avril Lavigne.

[4:58] Clips of the upcoming movie the Green Hornet also figure heavily.

[4:58] The screen collapses back to the dot, which is the dot in Sony's slogan "make.believe."

[4:58] Now an extended 3D trailer for Green Hornet, which comes out next week.

Seth Rogen of Green Hornet.
Seth Rogen of Green Hornet.

[5:01] It stars Seth Rogen as the titular crime fighter, whose trusty assistant, Kato, does more of the butt-kicking.

Live onstage, Seth Rogen and Jay Chou!
Live onstage, Seth Rogen and Jay Chou!

[5:02] The lights come up and the Green Hornet car cruises onstage. Out steps Seth Rogen, Sir Howard Stringer, and Jay Chou, who plays Kato.

[5:03] Rogen runs down the car's features, which include machine guns and Sony GPS (naturally).

[5:04] Stringer is now singing the praises of Rogen, who has had two $100 million pictures back-to-back--Superbad and Pineapple Express.

[5:04] Stringer stands alone onstage now, still wearing his 3D glasses.

[5:05] "The past year has been a good one for Sony, and we are stronger, leaner, and more profitable."

[5:06] "By March, over 50 million TVs in the US will be Internet-enabled by Sony Internet-enabled TVs, PlayStation 3s, or Internet-enabled Blu-ray players."

[5:06] On to PlayStation Network, which has 60 million registered accounts in more than 40 countries.

[5:07] Now he is talking about Network Services, which rolled out in 2010.

[5:07] Now he is talking up 3D, saying Sony handles both the hardware and the software of the technology.

[5:07] 2011 will be the year that 3D becomes personal, he says.

You guessed right--Sony wants to talk about 3D tonight.
You guessed right--Sony wants to talk about 3D tonight.

[5:09] 3D handycams and Bloggies--Sony's answer to the Flip Video--are in the works.

[5:10] 3D Vaio PCs are also coming this year, with improvements to 3D Bravia TVs and Blu-ray disc players also en route.

[5:10] 3net, Sony's 3D cable network, is due out in the coming months.

[5:10] It's a joint venture with the Discovery Channel and Imax.

[5:11] Hiroshi Yoshioka is now taking the stage to talk about Sony's "total 3D solution."

3net: coming soon.
3net: coming soon.

[5:13] Sony controls 3D production of films, distribution via Blu-ray and the upcoming TV channels, display via projectors and televisions, and personal content creation via 3D-enabled still and video cameras.

[5:14] Next up in Sony's 3D pipeline are personal 3D displays, including small 3D display screens and 3D eye goggles.

[5:14] He is now showing off the goggles, which have two high-definition 3D displays inside--one for each eye.

[5:15] He said he loved playing Gran Turismo 5 with the goggles, since nobody could ever interrupt him--not even his wife. "That way I can get the high score."

Sony's upcoming glasses-free 3D portable Blu-ray player.
Sony's upcoming glasses-free 3D portable Blu-ray player.

[5:16] The small display is actually a portable 3D Blu-ray player, which requires no glasses to view.

[5:16] Sony is working on a variety of prototype televisions that require no glasses to show 3D images--three prototypes are here on the show floor for display.

[5:17] There is no release time frame for the glasses-free 3D technology.

[5:18] Stringer is back and jokes that he forgot he was wearing the 3D glasses during the whole previous segment of the presentation. "I'm that stupid," he jokes.

Television: defined, again!
Television: defined, again!

[5:21] Now it's on to Sony Internet TV, powered by Google TV. Stringer says nearly 180 million Americans watch video online, and 65 million Internet-enabled TVs will be shipped worldwide in 2011.

[5:22] Cue sizzle reel--in 3D, natch--of all the features of Sony Internet TV, including Facebook and Google.

[5:22] Stringer promises that more information about Sony's cloud-based video service will come courtesy of Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai.

[5:23] Now Phil Molyneux, the British-born head of Sony's US electronics division.

[5:24] He says that by 2013, Sony will be the number-one electronics company in the US.

[5:24] Center to that strategy is Sony Internet TV.

Phil Molyneux, not to be confused with Peter Molyneux.
Phil Molyneux, not to be confused with Peter Molyneux.

[5:26] All televisions will begin to have the thin monolithic form factor and will have corning gorilla glass screens.

[5:26] There will be 27 new Bravia models this year.

[5:27] Besides Sony Internet TV, he talks up Qriocity, Sony's music and movie distribution service.

[5:28] Time Warner Cable offerings will be accessible "over a wide range of Sony products." The PS3 is not mentioned.

[5:29] EX620 TV will have built-in Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Qriocity, and will use the X-reality picture engine.

[5:30] Molyneux also talks up Sony Pictures' 3D offerings, which include the animated cartoon Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, which Sony plugged last year.

[5:33] He now unveils the HX920 series of dynamic edge LED backlit HDTVs, which will also support 3D and use the X-reality picture engine.

[5:34] Now it's the debut of the BDP-S780, a 3D Blu-ray player with built-in 802.11 Wi-Fi and embedded Skype.

[5:35] Now he's showing off the 3D Vaio, which can be connected to 3D-compatible TVs and can even convert 2D to 3D video at the touch of a button.

This personal camcorder supports
This personal camcorder supports "Double Full HD"--which is totally a thing.

[5:38] Next up: The world's first 3D handycam has double-image processors for the two lenses. Its 3.5-inch screen does not require glasses. He shows some video shot with the camera on the strip.

[5:38] The 3D Bloggie will come out this spring for about $250.

[5:40] Now he is showing off the Alpha line of digital SLR cameras, as well as a new Cybershot line, one of which will shoot 3D stills.

[5:41] He shows off some 3D snaps, which are being shown via the PlayStation 3.

[5:42] Now Steve Walker, head of marketing of Sony Ericsson, takes the stage.

[5:42] He says they are working on the most "entertaining smartphones" in the world.

[5:43] He shows off the first, Xperia Arc, which, like all other Sony Ericsson smartphones, runs Android.

The new Xperia Arc.

[5:43] The phone will have a 4.2-inch display and will use the mobile version of the Bravia engine. You can connect the phone to an HDTV via an HDMI cable.

[5:44] And…that's it for Sony Ericsson? Guess no PlayStation Phone/Xperia Play announcement.

[5:44] Molyneux is back onstage and is wrapping up.

[5:45] And he introduces Kaz Hirai!

[5:46] He is talking about leveraging the power of the network, and creating a unified Sony experience through a "slick interface."

Kaz Hirai takes the stage.
Kaz Hirai takes the stage.

[5:47] He is talking about native 3D gaming and uses Gran Turismo 5 as an example. The game has sold more than 5.5 million copies.

[5:47] Cue Uncharted 3 trailer…in 3D!

[5:48] It's the same trailer that debuted at the VGAs last month, but now in 3D.

[5:49] Due 11/1/11 for those not in the know.

[5:50] Hirai returns to the subject of connecting devices, especially mobile devices.

Now just imagine this in 3D.
Now just imagine this in 3D.

[5:51] "You can expect to see very significant products and services in the near future." These include new tablets and smartphones.

[5:52] Now it's back to Qriocity, the video-on-demand service.

[5:54] Qriocity's Music Unlimited feature will be available in the US during Q1 on Bravia TVs, the PlayStation 3, and other devices.

[5:56] Out comes a Sony executive to put Music Unlimited through its paces. The service includes more than 6 million songs from all major labels, but somehow they choose the Black Eyed Peas.

[5:56] This is all being done on a PlayStation 3, by the way.

The cutting edge of popular entertainment!

[5:58] He searches for Elvis Presley, and all the Elvis Presley songs come up. The service will learn your preferences through your playlists.

[5:59] To close out today's show comes the cast of Viva Elvis to boogie away the presentation.

[5:59] And that's it!

There is so much Elvis happening onstage right now.

@KrazzyDJ I said I use Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 (which supports 3D) and use a program called TriOviz for example. It allows 3D gaming. << LINK REMOVED >>
So you want to play your existing Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC games in 3D? Well Darkworks have announced its TriOviz software is available for Games SDK. This new software has a post-process effect that allows 2D games to be transformed into 3D and you don’t even need a 3D television. The news is that this all happens in the software and the glasses, which means that anyone watching you play will still see the images in 2D but without the usual blurred edges.
There are other softwares for this as well, I just can't for the live of mine remember the name of the one I _used_ to use.

The best news here are the pototypes for no-glasses 3d tvs I think they are realizing that gamers were tired of being nickled and dimed by the big three, and aren't going to adopt the glasses technology which does exactly that. Hopefully sony aren't the only ones who got the message when we didn't run out and buy the new tech. All around I hope they fast track this tech as it could turn 3d from a fad into a standard.

Sony has a vested interest in forcing 3D's success. But I'm still not sure about it. I have to try a racing game in 3D. Like now. I tend to think Burnout: Paradise (or Criterion's new offering NFS: Hot Pursuit) would be amazing in 3D.

Uncharted in 3D!? That's awesome! But Sony to be #1 electronic seller in USA by 2013? That's not gonna happen imo. How many competitors they have and Samsung and LG can provide their products with equal quality for lower price. :(

Way to go Sony! Always with a huge presentation got to love this. Too bad they didn't mention at least all the upcoming PS3 exclusives coming this year. Currently the #1 t.v. in America is actually one of our own for a change Vizio. Sony and Samsung I believe are the current 2nd and 3rd for t.v.'s in the U.S. they are so close its hard to say which is 2nd and 3rd half the time. If Sony takes the 1st in electronics will that also mean the t.v. section as well, it is possible (and not far fetched as they've been there before) we'll have wait and see.

@bandit7319
This is what I'm the most interested about: << LINK REMOVED >> However if for some reason it won't work: Copy-paste this: Hope for those who are buying the 3DTV without a clue that the purchase'll be worth it just for the lack of patience and for the refresh rate.
Prove the source wrong then. I didn't say this 3D was Red & Cyan, I was just saying there was 3D before 3DTVs, back on SEGA Master System for example, which is an 8-bit console that I own. Once again, if that plan does come to fruition, then I'll be more than happy that I didn't pay a dime for a 3DTV and instead sticked with my 42LD450. I don't understand how can it be so difficult to read before commenting. It says "ANY HDTV." which means "ANY". I didn't mention the glass-free 3D, but what you said about that is indeed correct. Personally, I'd never buy a Plasma either, I'll just stick with Liquid Crystal Displays and I'm not going to buy another TV as I bought a 630euro LG 42LD450 - 42", Full RGB, SuperWhite, Infinite Sounds (optimized 5.1 through 2x 10w speakers) and 60 000:1 Dynamic Contrast, focused in picture quality and has 2x HDMI v1.3 inputs just last July. If Sony's plan to integrate 3D onto PS3 comes to fruition, I'll surely be playing 3D on it as well. Also, if stereoscopic 3D required a 3DTV, then how come I can play 3D games on PC with just Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 and some files? I don't need a 3D monitor for it, infact I'm using M228WA-BZ there. It's called OPTIMIZED 3D. Just like how my TV does optimized 5.1 surround called "Infinite Sounds." Surely optimized isn't the same thing as the "real thing", but it sure is close enough for me.

This presentation looks awesome but i hope sony realizes that 3D tech is still expensive for normal consumers and dont put all its eggs in one basket! Also i hope the 3D angle in gaming doesn't compromise on its other areas like story, game play. What I am looking forward to is the awesome PS3 exclusives out this year!!

It seems like a lot of people aren't educated on 3D. Upgrading PS3 firmware will not make your TV play 3D. There are 2 Infrared emitters in the bottom right and left corners of the TV, so you will need a whole new TV to get 3D. Red/Blue has been around but colors will be distorted. 3D TVs are full color, just a bit darker due to the darker color of the glasses. Glasses-free 3D is still a good ways off and there are all kinds of difficulties companies are having creating it. It works on smaller screens because you're within the viewing angle. Such a narrow viewing angle is one problem, another is that the more people that start watching the glasses-free 3D, it has to split the signal, so each additional person will half the resolution to each, third third the resolution, etc. People are still under the impression that 3DTVs are outrageously expensive. Truthfully, they aren't really any more expensive than regular TVs. I got my 3D TV, Samsung, Plasma, 1080P, fantastic TV, for 1400. 3D Isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and it seems like PS3 is really doing a great job of leading the way. Time Warner has 4 3D stations, including ESPN 3D. There are HD Showcase 3D movies for rent for free through Time Warner, and they have feature length movies as well. There's also a 3D Events station. ESPN has already announced that it will be making ESPN 3D 24/7 3D games.

Between Nintendo and Sony, all 3D haters who say it's just a fad like last time shall be proven wrong. I agree with Rovelius about Sony's approach,at least to a point.Just like when HD,plasma, and flatscreen TVs were new,the hype got people to pay 2000 dollars for what can now be bought for 3 or 4 hundred, even though those were not MASSIVE leaps forward in technology.(HD fanboys get over it.HD isn't THAT life-changing.It's good, but not enough to drop $2k.) 3D TVs have a way to go before they saturate the market. They're expensive, and they don't all work so well. Some have "sweet spots",and some just don't look very "3D"(I've looked at them in stores with the glasses)Which are also insanely expensive. Sorry, but the 3D TV area needs to be ironed out a bit. All of that said,Nintendo had it right when they tried a glasses free, handheld personal device. And it looks like Sony is figuring that out, which I'm pleased to see. With a handheld device, you'll always be in the "sweet spot",and you don't need expensive glasses.Plus,it's way cheaper. The 3DS will be between 250 and 300 dollars.Steep for a handheld, but that's the most inexpensive 3D capable item I've seen, besides comic books with blue and red glasses :P Hopefully Sony's handheld 3D devices are relatively affordable as well. Then 3D WILL become personal in 2011. Sorry for the long post, and thank you all.

@zzamaro Hahaha. Assuming from your post, you think I'm a Ninty fanboy being butthurt over Sony. Well I actually have all 3 consoles and planning to get the 3DS too. My comment was a personal opinion on Sony's stand on 3D, they keep hosting keynotes after keynotes about how great the 3D is but do a bit of researches and you'll see 3D sales aren't going that well. The equipment just costs too much and many people are uncomfortable with wearing 3D glasses. 3DS, on the other hand... Oh and Zelda FTW?

@SwirlingCrystal The only actual difference is the refresh rate and the fact that 3DTVs can perform stereoscopic 3D at the moment. The HDTVs will get this feature later, Red & Cyan 3D has been available for Standard Definition for a very long time, so 3D doesn't a 3DTV to be honest. It's just software.

To all of those that think that they shouldn't push 3D etc, you do realize that a 3D TV can show a normal HD-picture as well? Just because its capable of showing a 3D picture doesn't mean it has to. Its just a TV that has an extra feature for those who want it.

@skemaal So it's a gimmick just because you say it's a gimmick? Wow, just drop it. Not everyone is going to agree with you. I'm also sure you don't know of the people who have an opinion on 3D. I know I'm in your minority then, as I'll just play in 3D on my Full HDTV without having to buy a 3DTV when Sony adds the firmware update for it on the PS3. (I wrote the source and the stuff earlier, I'm not going to re-post it, but I guess I could quote it if you can't find it.) Most of the people I've ran into have said they're not interested in 3D for the fact that the difference isn't too mindblowing to spend thousands on a 3DTV. Getting 3D by just buying glasses would most likely be a whole different thing. Also considering that prices go down, even with PC parts. So no, 3D is definitely not a gimmick, it just hasn't gotten it's boost yet. P.S. If you're so sick of it, why read about it then? No one's forcing you to enter 3D-gaming, it's better to have options than not have them, isn't it?

So sick of 3D this and 3D that. IT"S A FRIGGIN GIMMICK!!!! We got people how have yet to upgrade to HDTV nor have the upgraded to Blu-ray. Broadcasters can't even present their shows currently in HD, yet we push 3D....ahem...BS people....BS. Yes people will have 3D enabled device but not by choice as it just comes automatic with a lot of newer products but most aren't even interested in using it.

No PSP2 = FAIL I smell massive leaks in the future. By the time they reveal PSP2, it won't be a surprise anymore!

A lot of emphasis on 3D there. I guess it is here to stay then.

I'm quite interested in the glasses free 3d tv. I don't even have a proper HDTV in my bedroom (I use my monitor), so it won't be for a while, but I don't see myself ever wearing glasses to play games or watch tv, and this would be the thing that would really get me into it. The 3d camcorder also looks fun, but obviously you'd probably need a 3d display for it.

@ryuzke1 Should be quite obvious, as PS2 is not HD Ready it will not boost the resolution up using any better cables. The fact that your screen is a HDTV means it displays progressive resolutions better. SDTVs did interlaced resolutions (480i, 576i.) I think PS2 used native 576i (at least that's what the default SDTV PS3 resolution was) and cannot be raised. Therefore many people prefer 720p out of 1080i on HDTV panels. The difference is that in interlaced the pixels in the diagonal row are updated in different speeds, while in progressive they're updated the same time. Therefore the camera spots flickering if you try to record off-screen with an interlaced resolution, but doesn't do that in progressive resolutions. Bigger the TV, bigger the pixels, bigger the resolution needed for less eye disturbing pixolated image. So in short: Fat panels do interlaced resolutions better than flat screens. Flats on the other hand do progressive, however interlaced worse. You cannot do anything about it seeing that PS2 only does interlaced resolution and cannot be changed as it's not a HD-Ready console. I'm sorry, however if it does get annoying, you can try to adapt the PS2 to your computer screen and see if it's any better for you. I doubt your PC monitor is 50" anyway. :') However, to destroy my previous claim a little: PS2 is a bit more complex, seeing that SOME games on PS2 DO bigger resolutions depending on the version. I think GT4 for example had up to 1080i if you have the NTSC version and Swap Magic discs. The resolution offering also depends on which (fat or Slim) PS2 you purchased. The originals, at least if I remember correctly, don't do progressive signal, I'm not sure about Slim as I don't have one nor have I found the need to really find out.

Sounds like a solid line up of good gadgets, very interested in the new line of Ericssons (always the good old phone model with new features that match and rival other phones of their generation, I don't like touch screen phones but do want new features on my mobile). I'm a traditionalist, but I can see 3D tv's and internet tv's are going to be big this year.
