Euro PSP price drops

Following a cut earlier this month in the States, British PSPs also get a new price and Platinum titles.

Back at the beginning of April, after months of "ruling it out," Sony announced that the PlayStation Portable would be getting a price cut in the US, bringing the handheld's core price down $30 to $169.99. Sony remained tight-lipped as to when, or even if, those across the pond would be treated to similar savings.

Today it has been confirmed that the PSP will get a new recommended retail price in the UK of £129.99 (from £149.99), effective May 4. The portable will also get a price drop across the rest of Europe to 169 euros.

There will also be five new Platinum titles released at a new price of £14.99--Ridge Racer 2, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Killzone: Liberation, LocoRoco, and MotoGP.

The company said that the reason behind the price cut was to celebrate the PlayStation 3's launch in Europe. Ray Maguire, Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing director, said in a statement, "now the exciting possibility of connecting remotely to the PS3 makes PSP more relevant than ever. So what better time to offer a brand-new price point?"

fantastic move, I hate the lies tho. Just come out to say that.. "yeah, DS is outselling us right now, so we lower the price to combat that" Still, love my PSP, can't wait for a few good games due out next year or so. FF Crisis Core, GoW, Silent Hill Origins, DMC...

I really cant see why the PSP is struggling in the handheld market, it is immensly powerful for its size, has some great games, GTA for example, media centre for playing music, UMD films and displaying pictures. I doubt the price cut is going to help sales though, becuase if people just dont want them, the price of the product isnt going to change anything.

Even with the price cut here's some maths- US Price $170 = £85 UK Price $260 = £130 ($90/£45 difference) This is one reason why the Nintendo DS is selling more, because it's cheaper. Even with the increase of getting the thing to the UK in the first place which I guess costs more it's still more expensive than the US. I guess you wouldn't get many Americans paying $260 for a PSP now would you? Anyway nice to see Sony finally cutting the price.

i doubt £20 price drop is enough. my shop hasn't sold any psps since christmas and we have drastically cut down the display space for it on the shop floor. its now used for ds instead.

Still a little too expensive for a console with few exclusive games on it. But I'll be more likely to get it now. eminem_glen: "Even if the PSP was sold for £0.39, I wouldn't buy one." if it was sold at £0.39, you'd be the only wierdo who didn't have a PSP!

You should! I know it gets a lot of flak for trailing behind the DS but I think it's well fun, I love the little thing! Definitely was time for a price drop though, it has to be one of the reasons the DS sells more than it.
