Everything You Need To Know About Xbox Series X

We've rounded up every little bit of information about Xbox Series X, Microsoft's next-generation console.

237 Comments

The Xbox Series X is out now. Our review praised it as a powerful, refined Xbox console with tons of potential to unlock and a bright future ahead. Its counterpart, the Xbox Series S, is a similarly capable but compact version of the console with a few technical tradeoffs. If you're still waiting on your Series X to arrive or already have your brand-new console and are curious about its range of new features, we have you covered. In this roundup, you'll find everything you need to know about your new Xbox Series X, including technical specs, performance expectations, how backwards compatibility works, where to buy peripherals and other accessories, games, services, and more.

What Is Xbox Series X?

Word of a new Xbox console began circulating in early 2019. It was teased as a line of new consoles codenamed Project Scarlett. The official reveal of the Series X branding was unveiled at The Game Awards in December 2019, though a Microsoft spokesperson later clarified that this new generation of Xbox is simply called "Xbox," with Series X simply representing one of a planned series of systems this generation. This approach was further cemented with the reveal of the digital-only Series S in September 2020, which is also when both consoles received their official release dates of November 10.

When Did Xbox Series X Come Out?

The Xbox Series X was released on November 10, 2020.

How Much Does Xbox Series X Cost?

The Xbox Series X costs $500 USD. That price wasn't announced until about two months before the console's launch and about a week earlier than Microsoft originally intended, due to leaks. Microsoft reportedly took so long to reveal a price because it wanted to give potential buyers the chance to understand what the Series X really offered--though it is also likely that it waited until it was ready to reveal the lower-end Series S, to give consumers two price points right from the start.

If $500 is too much upfront, you also have the opportunity to purchase the Xbox Series X and a two-year subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate through a service called Xbox All Access. The bundle offer lets you pay off your Xbox Series X (or Series S), plus Game Pass, in 24 monthly installments of $35 per month. You'll end up saving about $19 in the long run, too.

Would love an exclusive RPG for launch, especially something cool like a FAble, KotOR, or Lost Odyssey. They really need to make Vampire Masquerade an exclusive, give some must have variety to a overly heavy shooter /bro games that have gotten tired last couple of gens.

And stop talking about, specs, BC, price, controller, and stay laser focused on games, games, and more games. But IF I was MS, I would wait as long as possible and let PS announce their price, and be like Price is Right, and under bid them by a dollar.

Instead of "Xbox Series X," since the name will inevitably confuse some people, can we just call it Xbox Series 10 or Xbox S10?

I wish they made the controller like the S-controller from the OG Xbox. That controller was perfect.

Just have the friggin' controller work without constant 'disconnect' popping up, for once. Went through 3 One X's...all had constant disconnecting controllers, including at the very first start-up log-in. The last Xbox console that was reliable for me was the 360.

@Shantmaster_K:
I was never a huge fan of the Fable games, but the rumor-mill is saying that the new Fable is moving away from the more whimsical look/feel of the previous games, in favor of something more mature. If so, it would address one of my gripes about the series, so I curious to see if this is true.

@H0RSE: I loved the look, but I think a more mature look would be pretty interesting in a Fable setting.

Whoever made this article really needs to fact check things better as it was confirmed that they will not be forgoing a disc drive.

"However, Xbox Scarlett will not be abandoning discs. Microsoft’s Matt Booty confirmed the system will have an optical drive during an E3 2019 interview with Eurogamer, stressing that the company knows players enjoy “building a collection” of physical games."

As someone who has been a console player since the NES, I'm in the process of jumping to PC.

All Xbox games will be available on PC, and typically you are just paying ~$500 for a streamlined 1 year old PC.

Rumors so far suggest both Scarlett and PS5 will be using a 3rd gen ryzen CPU, that is capable of raytracing.

I can almost bet that both Scarlett and PS5 will be some form of Ryzen 7 3700x (mid range 3rd gen ryzen CPU) and an RTX 2070 super w/16 gb of ram.

This is what I am currently building for ~$1400, and as far as the ps5 and Scarlett go, the only real difference will be both the CPU and gpu being intergraded into a single board with maybe some faster buss speeds.

I see no reason to keep shelling out for home consoles, with stuff like cross play, save and k+m support being added. Home consoles have essentially become dumbed down PCs.

@mike468:

"All Xbox games will be available on PC, and typically you are just paying ~$500 for a streamlined 1 year old PC."

- No, you're not... you cannot do 1:1 comparisons of PC and console hardware,as they are built and optimized differently. To match the power/performance the Series X has, you're going to need to spend over $1000 on a PC.

Console optimization can be fundamentally better than PC optimization, because they have access to lower level, closer "to-the-metal" graphics APIs than PC. This a good and bad thing for PC.

It's good because PC games use Direct3D or OpenGL APIs, so games will continue to work in the future, when hardware is upgraded/changed.

It is bad because this means games do not run as well as they could on current hardware, whereas console games are often pushed to the limit.

You're not doing 4K/60 on a $500 PC, let alone 4K/120, which HDMI 2.1 will allow and the Series X will support and take advantage of. There is also currently no GPU's or monitors that support HDMI 2.1, so that $1400 you plan on spending, is still going to leave your rig with less capabilities than the Series X.

There is also the issues that come with PC's that consoles do not have, like driver updates and software/hardware conflicts. And depending on what games you play, if you are not familiar with m/kb controls, you'll need to learn to effectively use them as well.

-----------------------------------------------------

"I see no reason to keep shelling out for home consoles, with stuff like cross play, save and k+m support being added. Home consoles have essentially become dumbed down PCs."

- It depends on your perspective. They may be "dumbed down" in the sense that they are a closed-system that aren't really designed for anything but entertainment, but then again, that's why they are a console and not a PC. A PC is a tool, a console is not.

However, they also give more "bang for buck" over PC's, in terms price/performance and they are ready to go out of the box - you put a game in and it works, which makes them incredibly user-friendly and arguably the single biggest reason people will choose console over PC.

To own/game on a PC, you need to have to have some degree of knowledge/know-how of the medium. For console, you do not. Virtually all of the problem solving/troubleshooting you'll encounter on PC, is done automatically in the background, or removed completely on console. As for cross-play, it is not a universal feature across all games. In fact, I would say the feature is still in it's infancy, so the mileage one gets from it will vary.

I have owned about 5-6 PC's in my life, and I've built every one of them, so I'm not just some "console fanboy" trying to shit on PC. I own both a PC and an xbox, since both offer me things the other cannot.

@mike468: I don't agree pc changes to keep on the higher end of the pc for gaming cost way more than paying for consoles every 5 years or so but to each their own

This time around I’ll wait till they release the best of the best instead of buying one then they come out with a more improved console. I’m so backlogged with games it will take me years to get it done.

@KLINGON:

Yup, my sentiment exactly. I will most likely wait a year or so before getting the next Xbox. That way, they will have done away with any problems that may come up with the system on release. And if there is any talk of releasing an update system, I'll just wait for that one.

I'm happy with my One X and am not in any real hurry to buy a new console. I have such a large back log and so little time as it is. So, I'm good for some time. I never buy hardware on release anyway.

Already built one of these, they're ok but I feel that the color of the case isn't with I had expected, shipping from Amazon was quick but next time I will remember to ask for more games as I have already finished the Halo Infinite but I like the backward compatibility of my PS4 games.

Hopefully my Wifi will work with this.

I vote for XBox Two, since it sounds like they were trying to reboot the name anyway. If MS were smart and they know that they don't make much money on hardware, then they should make the CPU & GPU modular and the memory expandable. Then we all don't have to waste money on the case & motherboard every 3 years and we can spend more of our money on games...BE SMART MS!!! If it is a PC, then dammit treat it like a tight controlled modular PC and stop yanking everyone's waddle about it. I don't mind a focused PC for the couch TV, since I like playing my games on the couch & not hunched over a PC mostly. And no, I don't want to hear any nonsense about PC vs PS4 vs XB1, I have all of them, but I went from hating MS and not buying anything to gaming mostly on XB1 now. Sorry I love my XB1 and the backwards compatibility won me over, along with the titles that I love, Titanfalls, Gears, Forza, Halo, Recore...etc. I am a sci-fi guy & I love my sci-fi shooters and I love to play them with friends online.

Don't get me wrong I still love the PS4 & their exclusives, but most of the exclusive games are single player & get boring fast with little replay value FOR ME. And so financially it made more sense when you factor in backwards compat., XB exclusives, & all the other games for both platforms to be played on the XB1x and to only pay for online MS Gold on XB. Then I just use the PS4 for the single player exclusives, which I don't need online PS+ membership for & can resell them when I get bored quickly.

For crying out loud please MS don't muck this up, maybe just ask the XB gaming community from time to time and take a survey on some of your decisions. After all it is us you are trying to please & our dollars that support you. Also please bring back MechAssault 1 & 2 remaster & a new 3. Man I cannot wait for a new Aliens shooter, Terminator, Predator, Transformers, Hulk, Spiderman, Avengers, TMNT, Sponge Bob. What the heck happened to the licensed classics this generation, they are sorely missed?

@gotrekfabian: If you game on PC, No. Otherwise you'll need one for Halo, Gears, Forza. Unless you bought a One X, in which case you're supposed to be able to play the new games.

You could pick up a cheap One X later since it does 4k and not even bother with the new boxes at all.
