Everything You Need To Know About Xbox Series X

We've rounded up every little bit of information about Xbox Series X, Microsoft's next-generation console.

The Xbox Series X is out now. Our review praised it as a powerful, refined Xbox console with tons of potential to unlock and a bright future ahead. Its counterpart, the Xbox Series S, is a similarly capable but compact version of the console with a few technical tradeoffs. If you're still waiting on your Series X to arrive or already have your brand-new console and are curious about its range of new features, we have you covered. In this roundup, you'll find everything you need to know about your new Xbox Series X, including technical specs, performance expectations, how backwards compatibility works, where to buy peripherals and other accessories, games, services, and more.

What Is Xbox Series X?

Word of a new Xbox console began circulating in early 2019. It was teased as a line of new consoles codenamed Project Scarlett. The official reveal of the Series X branding was unveiled at The Game Awards in December 2019, though a Microsoft spokesperson later clarified that this new generation of Xbox is simply called "Xbox," with Series X simply representing one of a planned series of systems this generation. This approach was further cemented with the reveal of the digital-only Series S in September 2020, which is also when both consoles received their official release dates of November 10.

When Did Xbox Series X Come Out?

The Xbox Series X was released on November 10, 2020.

How Much Does Xbox Series X Cost?

The Xbox Series X costs $500 USD. That price wasn't announced until about two months before the console's launch and about a week earlier than Microsoft originally intended, due to leaks. Microsoft reportedly took so long to reveal a price because it wanted to give potential buyers the chance to understand what the Series X really offered--though it is also likely that it waited until it was ready to reveal the lower-end Series S, to give consumers two price points right from the start.

If $500 is too much upfront, you also have the opportunity to purchase the Xbox Series X and a two-year subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate through a service called Xbox All Access. The bundle offer lets you pay off your Xbox Series X (or Series S), plus Game Pass, in 24 monthly installments of $35 per month. You'll end up saving about $19 in the long run, too.

So this is about twice AS powerful as the Xbox One X. Should be able to do 4K@60 for pretty much every game then, shouldnt it?

Seems like a nice upgrade

So essentially if you want your physical discs, you're going to pay extra for it.

Hopefully MS ditches the modified Windows OS for the Xbox because it's laggy as hell. The base PS4 is much more responsive than the X is.

I think this is the 1st console from MS that hasn't had ridiculous leaks before it was even announced.

@Vodoo: the ps4 dash also has significantly less features

That said the reason it's "slow" (and I disagree with that) is because of the CPU combined with the slow HDD. The insider preview dash is very quick and with Ryzen it will be absolutely top.notch.

@teamparadox2k: I am an insider as well. The MS dash loads much slower. Not only does it take almost triple the time to load from completely off, but you have to wait for all of the icons to load in before it moves fluidly. I am also using a faster external drive, not the internal one.

If I boot up my launch PS4, everything is loaded right away and I can scroll from one side to the other immediately, where my X takes a min to get going and if I press the right bumper 4 times to scroll to the store section, I have to wait for everything to load, then it will jump from Home to Store when it's ready. That doesn't happen on PS4.

The Xbox has a laggy dash in comparison. And being MS is a software company above all else, that should not be the case. In no way should Sony's base console move faster than MS's premium console.

@Vodoo: Windows sub-system is anything but laggy. It's been tested as the fastest core of any OS. Your concerns are in the UI above the OS, which is not Windows on the Xbox but another UI all-together. And, yes that needs help. Keep your concerns focused, and read more.

@nargg: Whatever... The UI over the Windows. It's still slow as shit was my point. I don't need to read more because I don't care what subset of what is causing it. I care that it's laggy as hell. That's the point I was making, not the technical jargon of what it is. Learn to read the point the person is making without nitpicking about inconsequential things. It's been slow SINCE they've implemented the Windows system on the Xbox. They changed the 360's UI a hundred times and it was ALWAYS faster than the XB1's.

And you would expect it to be faster than a launch PS4, being the X is a much more powerful machine. The dog ate my computer nerd dictionary. Sue me.

Xbox One was terrible. Mine just sits... And I had a big RROD problem with 360, as multiple broke. They just don't have the line up to compete. They are a shadow of what the og xbox was... halo, fusion frenzy, brute force, Splinter cell, oddworld, ninja gaiden, jade empire, crimson skies, forza, amped, nfl fever, conker, dead or alive, panzer dragoon, blinx, jet set radio...

@sonofsamus: considering all the studios they bought I'd say they are going back to games first. It was don mattrick that changes the focus and it's taken Phil Spencer years to right the ship but the plan was always to ensure the next console was powerful and had plenty of excellent exclusives

Skeptical of the claim about next-gen consoles "ditching hard drives" in favor of SSDs.

With game sizes being what they are, new consoles would need the same amount of storage as current-gen consoles, or more, and I expect that it would be be prohibitively expensive to offer the same amount of storage purely through SSDs (if you look at prices on 2TB SSDs right now, they go for between $200 and $300, while a 2TB HDD is around $60).

More likely is that the consoles could use a hybrid setup, with both a smaller SSD and a larger, cheaper HDD

@Spartan_418: if you buy in bulk ..and we are talking about buying millions upon millions of drives here, you get a significant discount on price and that's because of both the volume of sales and also the fact that they will be buying said drive for at least 4 years.

@Spartan_418: The article showed a 1 TB SSD, which are getting quite cheap these days. And, this will likely be a special order item, not consumer level. So likely not quite the normal SSD speed, but still far faster than a normal HD.

@Spartan_418: It depends who they get to make this SSD's. i bought a 2TB SSD for less than 200 bucks during black friday 2018. This consoles might not come out until at least December of next year so that's more than a year in a half and probably even longer if they don't come out until 2021. Prices for SSD will be much lower by then and that's what they are counting that the prices will be much lower if anyone wants to upgrade and buy a 2TB SSD for their console

@doomsdayhell01: The cheaper SSD's have a more finite amount of read/write cycles. Meaning they'd have to be replaced more compared to the good ones.

Also, they may use a high bandwidth cable to transfer games between a storage HDD and the SSD that plays the games. Something like a Thunderbolt 2 cable to transfer data between the 2. So you have a few games loaded on the SSD and can quickly swap between them with a fast interface.

@Vodoo: not true. I have a super cheap no name SSD. It's constantly being written to and it's well past it's expected lifetime use and still working just fine

I have 7 SSD's in my PC and none have ever failed and 3 of them were super cheap garbage.

@teamparadox2k: I'm not saying they WILL fail automatically at their time, just they're more prone to than the more expensive ones. But I bet if you ran the Samsung Magician tool for SSD's that it's slower than when you first had it. They wear down over time. Doesn't mean they'll automatically shut off on exactly the time specified.

@Spartan_418: I imagine they'll only start at 1TB, which will be too low. The PS4 and Xbox One launched at 500GB which is a joke when some game installs are 50GB+. 1TB SSDs are getting closer to the $100 mark so I think I can see it happening.

@SoNin360: 50GB games are still very rare. The average is far lower. For instance Fortnite is less than 10GB. At that size you could have 100 games install on a 1TB SSD. And, still unlimited available in the cloud. Unless you can find a way to play 100 games at once...

@SoNin360: You Imagine? They not putting anything bigger than 1TB. Maybe two or 3 years later after the release of this consoles they will do a slim version of this consoles with a 2TB SSD and that can definitely happen with a slim version later on

I'm worried the Xbox Lockhart with 4Teraflop will be the bottleneck for next gen game development and limit the potential of games.

@jacky89: like a PC games will scale visually. It won't be an issue. The game may be hideous on low end but I doubt it because low end will likely be the x1x with an SSD and gddr6.

@siarhei: yes, Ms confirmed that already. They may abandon the original though.

I think they will always support the previous high end console which will drop in price significantly.

I'd probably be more excited about this if MS managed to pump out one must-have AAAA exclusive this gen. Here's hoping they can match good specs with better studio management.

@Shewgenja: Playground games make AAA racing games so it's most likely their non-racing games will be the same quality. They have some great talent from other studios joining Xbox so should be a lot better than this gen.

I’m sure they will offer versions with no disc drive, but there is no way they ditch it completely. That would be Don Matrrick idiotic. Too many people still like buying physical disks.

@hoard_moard: One would think so being all they talking about specs which is nice but it would be nice when they talk games. Even if they make good games I will wait for an price drop or good sale even if it takes an while I would probably trade in my X as I do not see no need in keep it. If it has BC I would rather it have an disc player as I have an huge collection. I would get the newer games going forward as they may be phasing out physical media but again I still need that disc player.

@lonewolf1044: they have been talking games since last E3. Buying 6 developers and creating their own AAAA studio. We will see what a lot of their new studios are working on this E3 hopefully. And this isn’t MS talking about specs. It’s rumors from a website what they think the specs will be.

@Shantmaster_K: Don't count on a bunch of great exclusives out of Microsoft. It's just not their business plan for Xbox. They want to become the Netflix of gaming, offering a bare minimum of original content while profiting as middleman for everyone else's.

@chippiez: that’s just pure ignorance. Exclusives are in MS’s plan. That’s why they are buying developers and created their own AAAA studio. The Netflix model is genius and a great deal for gamers. Sony will be doing the same thing in the future.

i havent owned a console in over 10 years since the xbox 360, but i gotta disagree. 500 dollars isnt a bad price for all of this.

This next gen of console actually doesn't look like garbage now, SSD, decent cpu and gpu, games should be 60 fps minimum. I still probably wouldnt buy one since like you said, not really any exclusives good enough to care about that interest me, but if i didnt have a PC, this would do the job pretty good.
