Expect Wii HD 'upgrade' in '10, no new consoles until '13 - Analyst

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter tells investors to expect a high-definition version of Nintendo's console next year, but believes publisher investment will put off next hardware generation.

Although Sony's PlayStation 2 is holding up remarkably well nine years on, game-console life cycles traditionally last around four to five years. However, if one of the leading US game-industry analysts is to be believed, the current crop of consoles won't be succeeded as soon as their forbearers.

The Pachter Speaks.
The Pachter Speaks.

Although the Xbox 360 was released in 2005 and the Wii and PlayStation 3 arrived in 2006, Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter said that we shouldn't expect truly new consoles in 2010 or 2011. "We do not expect the 'next' generation to begin before 2013, if at all," he said. The latter part of his comment may be in reference to new technologies that may disrupt the console model, such as the OnLive cloud-computing game network revealed at this year's Game Developers Conference.

"We remain convinced that the publishers will resist the introduction of any video game hardware technology that requires a refresh of software, as the publishers have as yet to capitalize on the immense investments made in being competitive in the current cycle," Pachter continued.

"We therefore think it is likely that the 'next' generation will begin after 2013, meaning that software sales are likely to grow by a compounded annual rate of 6-10 percent for another five years. Because R&D costs are likely to flatten out with the benefits of a learning curve, we expect earnings leverage as the publishers are able to exploit R&D investments. In brief, we think that investors have it wrong so far this cycle, and think that investment in video game publishers will bear fruit for many years."

One thing Pachter does expect next year, though, is "the long-rumored high-definition Wii, which is likely to upgrade the Wii to current console technology." Last year, similar rumors circulated about a HD Wii, but those pegged the device as arriving in 2011.

I like the Wii's design as is...more developers need to make better use of the technology, but HD is unnecessary. I have yet to see how HD makes gaming any better...not that I don't like my PS3, but it's not the graphics that keep me playing it.

Yes! HD Wii! Finally, a Wii that combines Next Generation hardware with the quality of games from 3 generations ago! I can see the marketing campaign now: "Nintendo Wii HD. If there were any games to play on it, they would look AWESOME!"

We can't call this generation a generation unless it has (at least) 2 Metal Gears, 2 Halos and 2 Zeldas... Hell we didn't even get Final Fantasy or Team Ico's game...

I wasn't going to buy into a new gen that soon anyway. Good if they wait so long, and bravo is The N does the HD thing. But I would wait to buy a Wii if that happened. But who knows, this IS Patcher after all. Wait and see.

nintendo wont do it for wii, their business model is a long-term bust the turn of tides in japan is case-in-point. btw stereo neither PS3 or 360 are hardcore only, the core part of gaming is basically the games themselves. wii just uses a different type of controller to play them big whoop. but the games they deliver arent far-reaching innovative at all. PS3 moreso than 360 has the capability and the backing to go farther in innovation. gaming is evolving, the endgame is virtual reality

There will be no Wii HD. If anybody paid attention and studied Nintendo's business strategy we wouldn't even be seeing articles like this. Bleeding edge graphics and hardware functions are not top priorities for a lot of people and people do not want to play games that take many hours to finish and they want games that can complement their lifestyle, not be their lifestyle. That is why the Wii is "winning". Nintendo made a product that is customer oriented, not product oriented that feels like it is only geared to those who love to act like video game "Gods" who say what is a game and what is not or for those who say they are "real" gamers and anybody who doesn't follow the "hardcore laws" are but mere idiots.

Personally I think that the current gen of consoles is fairly underutilized, especially the Wii. We need good games, no new consoles every 4 years. Besides, all of us want to have a good long run with our money and not waste it on a new system every few years. Both the 360 and PS3 are capable of near-photorealistic graphics technology-wise - I still believe that the PS3's hardware is underutilized. As far as the Wii goes, uhmm, no more minigame compilations, and real good games - a console does not need to have HD graphics to be successful if it has good games (and that was Nintendo's slogan in the first place, wasn't it?) I'd like to see the next gen of consoles released no earlier than '16

Well, the only real good news I see out of this is that this cycle will last maybe 8 years. This is good because any sooner really seems... too soon.

Would an HD Wii actually help Nintendo? Hmmm.... Only if they considerably modified it so it can compete graphically with the PS3 and 360.. And is also lacking a hard drive. Interesting.

Yeah don't forget I'll sue you BtmnHatesRnb for keep me wating. Anyhoo where does this Pachter guy gets all his ideas? I mean he just talks about all these "Oh by this month, X company will do this" predictions. I remember how he "predicted" a PS3 price cut by April and that didn't happen, he also predicted 450,000 units of Chinatown wars sold and that didn't happen either. He also predicted PS3's version of GTA IV selling more than 360 and that didn't happen either. So I want to see proof as to where he bases all his predictions from and why some (if not most) of his predictions are not true.

A year ago I had a choice, get a console that I would like or get a console my wife and kids would enjoy, we went with the latter. After one year of shaking my head at the crap that is available for the wii my burden is finally lifted to hear Nintendo might console my console blues.

I hope this comes out soon. It would be nice to have some higher graphics for the games that I have. I just hope it will be a cheap or free easy upgrade. Maybe this will encourage more game companies and other games that are only on the Xbox and Playstation to come to Wii too.

We don't need any new consoles right now. That will over saturate the market and God forbid, lead to another crash.

Expect Nintendo to release a patch for every one of their current 1st part games for HD compatibility. Better yet, re-release all of them in HD, so more money for them.

@theKSMM Doesn't matter because there's plenty of space to hold the HD graphics on a DVD, then just knock it down per individual system specs. This's how computer games have been programmed for decades in regards to graphics. If you need a historical example, take something simple, like Leisure Suit Larry from 1987. The graphics for IBM, Apple II, C-64, Atari ST, and Amiga are all done in 320 x 240 16-color "EGA", then the game just checks who's running what, say you have a monochrome monitor on a Hercules card, and it displays, on the fly, the monochrome version of the game. If using this principle, a game company could, actually, make one disc and just partition it with separate boot loaders to start with the proper interface when the disc is inserted into the specific console. Licensing for publishing on a particular console right now prevents this, but back in the 1990s, Infocom and RedOrb used to publish computer games that could boot into IBM format for use on Windows or the two flavors of Mac that were out at the time.

Expect a new console announced later this year from somebody. Not saying who, just wait. Actually, if I do write who it is, GameSpot will get sued, then they'll sue me, I'll counter-sue, then get sued by the company in question, who I'll counter-sue, too. There's your comedy.

i dont need new consoles, they work just fine. I need more games! Xbox is doing good but my wii... its just sitting there, crying, sometimes calling out for me. PLAY ME. I tell it that i want to but what. It says " Comon we can play metroid, super smash, or galaxy." But I already beat those, so now it just waits, waiting for the conduit. And i tell him, only two more months. But after that, whats next?

whatever happened to Nintendo's vision that power isn't everything in a console? haven't they forgotten that's the reason why the Wii was successful in the first place, by talking on a different approach for gamers to experience? just leave they HD on the 360 & PS3. Nintendo should stick to what they have for now & implement HD on the Wii's successor

This is actually in line with my predictions for this cycle. Given the enormous investments that Sony and Microsoft made in their technology, it is unlikely that they'll abandon it after a mere five years to simply give us another $500 console that just pushes more polygons. The PS3 / XBOX 360 market is far from saturated yet. The Wii on the other hand, didn't require cutting edge tech, and the clear, easy upgrade for them is HD graphics. Of course, that too could prove problematic. Does a developer write to the large SD base or the fledgling HD base? And do I really want to see the textures of Mario and Zelda in true HD? They look bad enough in 480p. Sony and Microsoft will probably ride this cycle for about seven years. Nintendo will probably shoot for five before a "refresh" if not a true update. (Multiple Wii colors, anyone?) Developers will continue to eke as much performance as they can out of their existing engines.

on the wii hd, nintendo shouldn't waste the time, just wait for the next console, for the new consoles i really wouldn't see new ones coming out next year, but maybe in 2011 or 12, and for on live, I don't think that would change the industry as much as they said, people like to see their games, and not pay a fee to just use there console, i think that it might be a big thing on pc and mac, but i don't think it will take over the console market

the 360 will compete just fine considering sony has lost almost all of their exclusive games and they are not selling nearly as many consoles as the 360. It's a shame really, Tekken 6 was going to be the game to finally get me to buy a ps3. Now I probably never will.

To date no Wii games are done in HD, and by '10, anyone who wants a Wii, bought a Wii, so all we would get is Upscaling, which wouldn't really increase image quality by much (until Wii HD games, but that will take a while), so I call bogus on this, a waste of time on Nintendo's part.

Would MS and Sony just sit and watch Nintendo upgrade the Wii to 360/PS3 specs? In the technology leap-frog game Nintendo is already one step behind.

I don't really like onLive. I'd rather be able to see my games, not play them while streaming. i just feel like they could just disappear. And I certainly hope that there will be a next-gen console within the next 4 years. The 360 and Wii wouldn't be able to compete...
