Fallout 4 Ships 12 Million Copies in One Day, Breaks Records

Huge numbers reported for Bethesda's RPG.

Fallout 4's launch was a huge success. Bethesda announced today that the game shipped 12 million copies worldwide for launch day alone, "representing sales in excess of $750 million." In addition, the game is generating "record sales" at brick and mortar stores and across Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC.

Bethesda did not say how many of those 12 million copies shipped to retailers were actually sold through to consumers. The $750 million number likely represents the total possible revenue, if indeed all 12 million were actually sold. We've contacted Bethesda in an attempt to learn more about Fallout 4's performance.

"Major retailers have informed Bethesda of the tremendous consumer interest in Fallout 4 , with some noting it was the most pre-ordered game this year," Bethesda added, noting that the Pip-Boy Edition became the fastest-selling collector's edition for any game in history "at leading retailers."

"Following the release, Bethesda was advised that launch day sales at some of the leading retail chains were the largest of any game released this year," the company explained. "Bethesda is now shipping more Fallout 4 units to retailers to meet ongoing market demand."

By comparison, the last game from Bethesda Game Studios,--2011's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim--shipped 7 million copies in 48 hours to retailers and sold through 3.5 million to consumers during that period. As of January 2014, the game had sold through to consumers 20 million copies worldwide.

On Steam alone, Fallout 4 was the top-played game at launch, at one time reaching over 470,000 concurrent players. This blasted past a previous record held by Grand Theft Auto V. In addition, Bethesda claims the Fallout Pip-Boy app was the "number one game" on the iTunes App Store.

Finally, Bethesda said Fallout 4 set a new record to become the most-viewed game launch for any new game released so far this year.

Fallout 4 launched on November 10 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's review and what other critics are saying. In addition, Bethesda has teased the game's upcoming DLC and players have discovered an infinite money exploit.

@turbojugend16: You aren't educating anything. You're just spouting out your opinion like it is fact and downing others for what they think when it doesn't agree with you.

@he4rtl3ss: Say what you want. Name a game that has better AI and shooting mechanics, please. Even at release with all the bugs and kinks that will get worked out, it still beats out most shooters in my book. The AI actually thinks, tries to hide from you, comes around at different angles, doesn't just come around the corner chasing you; if you're a gamer you know what I'm talking about.

@tomahawk08: "Name a game that has better AI and shooting mechanics, please" Umm, almost any AAA fps? Let's not kid ourselves here, the AI is bad and shooting, though much better than previously because now bullets actually go where you aim, is still not at at a full fledged shooter standards. Frankly Bethesda needs to move on from their standard formula of combat they have in all of their games, Morrowind's time it was great and they pretty much perfected it with Oblivion and F3, but so many better styles of open world games have come since then and Bethesda's style feels so archaic.

F4 is still really damn good what 15+ hours I've played, but the combat most of the time just isn't good or fun, same was with Skyrim. They still do extremely well build worlds and smaller stories

@Stebsis: Alright, don't give AAA fps too much credit. Halo, CoD, Destiny, BF... the list goes on... All the same regurgitated crap, in my opinion. The AI isn't bad, they actually react to your movements and actions. And the shooting is shooting, not sure what you expected it to be? It's not like it's Payday's shooting mechanics...

I guess I just enjoy the change of pace from AAA games more so than others.

@tomahawk08: MGSV has better AI and gameplay. The Last of Us has better AI and gameplay as well. I can't stand the lack of fluidity of character movement in fallout 4 as well as the AI, they act and feel like robots. At least the enemies in the games mentioned look like they have life in them with personality.

@kaalkurayami: Yes, I'll agree to MGSV and TLoU, great gameplay and AI. But even in MGSV, a game I love to death, have always been a huge MGS fanboy, they are on a scripted pathway. You sit back, watch, and figure out where they will walk. They won't change it up. TLoU, loved it, crushed it, fell in love with it. Naughty Dog did a great job with the stealth mechanics in my opinion, but it still had a janky feel, especially around the clickers.

Fallout 4, what little I've gotten to play so far, has been great, in my opinion. The firefight mechanics have gotten a lot better than the previous games. Like I previously mentioned, they just seem to actually think about the situation instead of follow some pre-determined path or come at you guns blazing. I will say I haven't gotten far enough in to say for certain how accurate I am though.

@tomahawk08:

Gameplay is the LAST thing you could praise a Bethesda game for and FO4 is no exception. Get real.

Just because they went from mediocre to average doesn't mean you get to act as if the game is the second coming of Christ. FO franchise does a lot of things right but gameplay and A.I aren't among them.

@kaalkurayami: Yeah, that's one of the things I noticed with Fallout 4.

The animations are outdated.
