Final Fantasy 14 Song Claimed as "Unimaginative Theft" by Band

Unimaginative theft or unusual coincidence? You make the call.

Nu-metal band Powerman 5000 claimed a song in Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn was an "unimaginative theft," saying it sounds similar to their hit "When Worlds Collide." You can hear both songs in the videos below.

The industrial rock band's frontman Spider One (whose real name is Michael Cummings) made the claim on the band's Facebook page (via Polygon). The post said that the "level of unimaginative theft" was "mind-blowing."

"I mean, this is When Worlds Collide!" he explained. "Using something as inspiration is one thing, but a straight up rip off is another! Did they really think no one would notice?"

"When Worlds Collide" is one of Powerman 5000's most well-known songs, being used in video games such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, and WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw. The movies Little Nicky and Mission Impossible 2 also feature the song. You can listen to it in the video below.

The similarities were originally brought up on the Final Fantasy XIV forums by user Kerwin. Director Naoki Yoshida responded to the thread, and you can read his full response below.

"Regarding the Music for the 2nd Phase of Containment Bay S1T7

I have read through your comments concerning the BGM for the 2nd phase of the Containment Bay S1T7 battle with Sephirot, and I would like to personally explain how the track was conceived.

As most Final Fantasy fans already know, Sephirot (the Fiend) is a legacy boss character who originally appeared in Final Fantasy VI. When considering how to portray Sephirot's return in Final Fantasy XIV, we decided to pay tribute to FFVI by working VI's 'Battle to the Death' track into the Containment Bay S1T7's first phase, while opting to create an FFXIV original for the second.

Building upon the motif of Sephirot as a representation of the World Tree, to create this Final Fantasy XIV original track, we further incorporated story-driven themes of death and a warped obsession with life, all while utilizing a musical genre─industrial rock─which we believed would provide substantial emphasis to the message.

Industrial rock is a popular genre that can be further divided into numerous sub-genres. Countless songs from these genres have been released worldwide, and I have been made aware of an allegation regarding similarities between an existing track and the track created for the 2nd phase of Containment Bay S1T7. However, track composer Masayoshi Soken, has also stated to me that he was unaware of the track in question while working on this Final Fantasy track.

We hope that you continue to enjoy Final Fantasy XIV battle content."

Cumming has since posted another Facebook update, saying the band is not filing a lawsuit and it wasn't a "cry for attention or publicity."

"The original post was a two-sentence observation about a piece of music that was way too similar to be coincidence," he said. "Since then it has been taken as some sort of declaration of war. Oh, Internet..."

He then said that he's returning to his "normal M.O. of not participating in social media."

What do you think? Is the Final Fantasy song an "unimaginative theft," or is it just an unusual coincidence?

Called it Sampling in ye olden days, but they added their own flare somewhere in the music.

This is eerily similar... too similar to just say "Never heard of the band... our is original". They were better off just admitting that the composer was a fan of PM5K, asked for their permission to sample, and pay the fee.

Now you have a potential lawsuit....(Satriani vs Coldplay anyone?) and bad press... Both sides will settle though.

I'm not a fan either song and I'm definitely not saying they're exactly the same, BUT when you can literally sync the two songs at 14 seconds in, it's hard to say they are completely different as some people are contending. I'm not saying they should sue or anything, because a lot of songs have the same bpm and similar riffs, but I don't think making an anecdotal comment on Twitter is grounds to start some internet battle, either.

Base guitar in powerman is identical to realm reborns. Both open to a soft electronic loop. The chorus melodies do differ though.

More importantly, both are extremely corny.

Still if I were in the powerman band I could definitely see that as theft.

It's not theft, its nu-metal. It all sucks and sounds the same. The same could be said for this garbage and every shitty disturbed song.

They sound INCREDIBLY similar. Even as a Final Fantasy fanboy I have to agree with PM5K on this one.

For those who think this is "stealing": https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/47qokm/soken_pm5k_musical_break_down/

tldr: People are just too bad at music to notice that the songs are completely different, just the same style.

Similar? Maybe but a direct rip off, absolutely not. The vocalists do have similar voices though.

Wow! The lyrics are so wonderful, cool, and kick-a$$, for that matter. It's kinda odd that Sephirot makes worlds collide for the matter, to bring about "the end of all time", to quote "When Worlds Collide". The song is kinda sung by a Spider One-soundalike, for the matter. It was pretty much a Suspiciously Similar Song, IMO.

Sounds far too similar to be purely coincidental; perhaps the rhythm-challenged might disagree.

I'd say that someone doesn't know their genres. "Industrial" is a genre (with multiple sub-genres). "Rock" is a genre (with multiple sub-genres). "Industrial Rock" is fusion. Other than that... yeah, they do sound remarkably similar.

Why is this happening lately, like the 3rd top Japanese company being implicated with ripping off Western songs. It's a shame too because I love most of their classic Anime theme songs but some of these new musicians over their are getting a bit lazy on originality.

I can definitely see the resemblance. But frankly every song in existence will be found to have another song sound quite familiar to it. Unless each cord struck and each word sung matches up it really doesn't matter. I bet their song sounds like one that was already made at some point before they made theirs as well.

Embarassing to be accused of ripping off a Powerman 5000 song. Would be like stealing credit for a picture a 5 year old drew.

Happy to see they aren't pressing charges or anything. Rare nowadays. I can certainly hear the similarities, but it's different enough to make it its own thing imo.

As someone who plays FF (and is currently working on the fight), i can say:

- i like the feel that the music gives
- i actually learned about the power 5000 because of the song in question
- i don't think it of it as a steal, because the whole bgm (of the whole fight) isn't equal to a the song in question (but a part of it is)
- i would like it more if the song / part of it wasn't that similar
- it still gives me a rush feeling (and my foot "dancing") when we get to that phase, would be sad if they removed it
- maybe change that part so it does sound similar (but not same) OR give a special thx/recognition/money to the band and avoid all the crap
- lot of people respect Soken (composer of FFXIV) and i don't think anyone wants this to ruin his reputation / influence badly his new work/ new music in FFXIV in general

So yea, i like it, but it feels stolen. T.T

yea, some stuff can feel like they are one thing, but actually they are not.

And even if you know they are not, still can't shake the subjective feel they give...

Something like that :)

Or in other words: I don't think it's stolen, but it reminds me too much of it.

This is always really tricky to judge. Both songs certainly sound very similar, but then again both songs also sound like something Rob Zombie or Nine Inch Nails would knock off in an afternoon. It's a very stripped-down riff, and that only leaves you so many places to go with it. FWIW the first bit is very similar, but the 'end of the beginning' bit seems more original.

Then, of course, you get the usual problem with anything creative that you might hear something, forget all about it, then basically copy it when you're trying to come up with something of your own without realising it. Ultimately, I think it's a smart move to not take it any further, because all that would achieve is to make a bunch of lawyers rich(er).

Sounds similar, although neither of those tunes made me want to blow up a bus of nuns like When Worlds Collide does!

@forciplier: I thought of the same thing, then remembered Ice explaining the difference. It is amazing he was allowed to do that.

As far as I am concerned Ice was stealing, this is coincidence.

I played the Powerman 5000 song first. First time I ever listen to it. I then played the FFXIV video, and a few seconds in I had to pause it just to make sure I didn't still have the first video running by mistake.

That's just the way that style of music sounds. I'm sure you pull up other songs that sound similar. Like I always say, if you changed the key and/or the time signature of songs you can make them all sound the same.

Wow, it's been YEARS since I heard When Worlds Collide.. and right when it got into the song (14 seconds) I thought I was listening to it with different words.

It's so damn similar. There's no way they could not be feigning ignorance with its creation.

All you kids dont understand jack about music theory. This is the same song. Period. Yeah it doesnt have the original chorus, but If I only steal the verse of Stairway to Heaven, how is that not still stealing?

Its not a matter of sounding like the When Worlds Colide. It IS When Worlds Collide. Blatant theft. No amount of fanboi-ism will change that. They changed the lyrics. Still theft.

@TheeVindicator: Ahahahaha, what an idiot.

You think you know music theory, yet you claim that these two songs are the same despite them sharing all of zero note sequences. Only someone nearly tone deaf would make such a mistake. The songs are the same genre and have a similar sound and vocalist, and the first 14 or so seconds are similar but not identical. That's where the similarities end.

Here's a breakdown by someone who actually does know music theory:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/47qokm/soken_pm5k_musical_break_down/

Now stop talking.

@TheeVindicator:

My opinion has no fanboi-ism involved. I would agree that the type of song and any music that isn't traditional ff music should be removed (seeing as the chracters in the game speak in old english. I am just sick and tired of seeing articles like this. And I don't agree its a blatant rip off, because I have heard many songs in my day that sounded like each other (to many to count actually). It doesn't give someone the right to win a dumb lawsuit because a tune was the same.

@hyru99: I get that not everyone understands music theory but it really isnt a matter of opinion. We could put both songs down on sheet music and they would be nearly identical. Its an objective assesment not a subjective one. Its like if I wrote a book first and you wrote the same book but changed the characters names. Its still obviously stolen and very easy to prove.

It sucks that as an artform people dont value music like they do everything else. If I made a game called Call of Dooty and lifted the exact storyline of Call of Duty but changed my characters names to Bodywash and Captain MacTarnish nobody here would be arguing if I stole it or not.

@TheeVindicator: Right on man its theft if you just change a few things. You have to do it in your own words and that means speaking and instruments together THEN give credit where credit is due.
