Final Fantasy 7 Being Made Into 2D Brawler By Fans

This is one way to remake Final Fantasy VII.

94 Comments

Final Fantasy VII is currently being remade for PlayStation 4, but it's still a long way off. For those fans who want to play a different version of the game before the remake is finished, there's now a reimagining of Final Fantasy VII as a 2D brawler.

A dedicated group of fans have started a project to redo FFVII as a side-scrolling beat-em-up, complete with a lot of the features you'd expect in the game. You can play as either Cloud or Tifa, and you can play cooperatively with a friend. In addition, the game has support for the Materia and Guardian Forces systems, and you can call Barret in as fire support.

"We reimagined how the game would be like if it's an action game," developer PD Design Studio explained on its website. "Classic 2D side-scrollers, such as Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, Streets of Rage, etc., came to our minds. We thought about how we can incorporate some of the FFVII game play elements, such as Materia and summoning of Guardian Forces, into a Hack and Slash genre."

Of course, since this isn't a Square Enix-sanctioned project, the team may run into some problems in the future. As such, this is a free game "done purely for fun," the studio states.

If you go to its website, you can play the game in your browser. Otherwise, you can download an executable to run it from your PC. There's only one level completed at the moment, but so far the project looks very promising.

Keep an eye on GameSpot for more news about the official Final Fantasy VII remake in the coming months.

Looks neat but too bad you're never going to be able to play it. It will get shut down in the next few days.

This game has zero chance of seeing the light of day. Seriously, are these fan devs completely blind to reality? Square-Enix lawyers will shut this thing down before Monday.

Squeenix has a very special Summons for situations such as this. He is called "The Lawyer" and he evokes the mighty Cease & Desist. And it always crits.

@Barighm:You're aware that "Cease & Desist" letters (it has to be a letter or it doesn't work) alone has little to no power, a C&D letter needs a signature of the copyright owner, the legal representative(the lawyer) and the judge that will turn it real.

@Knighthawk_X: Yeah, lol, he clearly missed the actual reference in which FF Summons have a summons name and then their specific abilities have a spell name.

@playstationzone You didn't hear? Square said if you fans support these unofficial releases you don't deserve a remake akin to the holy grail. And then they proceeded to laugh maniacally BWAHAHAHAHA

@playstationzone: Why would they cancel a project they have been working on for a long time and lose millions doing so? Just because some fans have made a completely different game (that they will probably shut down anyway)? There is no relation between one thing and the other... there's no logic in what you said.

Take it down please. Square Enix worked way to hard to build their brand, please respect the people who put blood, sweat and tears into these games, its ok to be inspired by Final Fantasy, but to straight copy their hard work is not right.

Or just get permission from Square Enix.

@mesome713: I would think making a fangame or fan something about someone's pre-existing franchise would be respecting the people who made it. I'm not sure in what world it wouldn't be (except "adult" material, if you catch my drift... and even that can be respectful under the right circumstances). If these people did want to disrespect FF7, they would likely make an anti-fangame called "Final Fantasy 7 Sucks!" While I don't speak for Square Enix, if someone made something based on my material, I would be ecstatic. In other words, don't judge by licensing- judge by what one sees.

I swear- copyright these days has blinded companies and (even sadder) some casual folks.

@DMZapp: If 100 people created fan games then it would oversaturate the market. Then when the real creators behind the game decided to final make one, everyone would be gamed out. They would say, hmm, i dont want to pay $60 for a game that i just got done playing 15 fan made ones for free.

@mesome713: ... except there aren't '100' fan-made games out there, and this isn't a copy of the original game or a sequel with similar gameplay; it's a 2D beat 'em up that's fun for a few minutes. It's nearly impossible that a fan-made game could measure up to a remake or sequel made by the original developers in terms of quality. Therefore, your point is moot.

@Knighthawk_X: You should check out a game called Black Mesa. Its the best fan made game ive ever played. Its also an awesome one.

You let one do it, and you have to let them all.

...not exactly. While I do support fangames, I also understand the scope of what's preventing/discouraging companies from outright allowing them, such as the reply you gave me.

Even legal barriers, however, are just barriers. They're tough to cross to and fro, but not impossible. There are some workarounds companies could use (and have used) to have their cake and eat it too. In other words, they can cheat what's forcing them to outright C&D fanworks and keep the ability to selectively close the door, even when they do find out.

@Barighm: Not *all* of them are nazis about this. Nintendo is, Square is, Konami is, and Sega are, but some of the others are not, like Capcom or Bamco.

@Barighm: Remember this?

(Although Capcom basically let them release it so Capcom could pretend like they still cared about Mega Man)

Nintendo or Square would NEVER allow something like that.

Sadly, at this point this sounds as positive but... Square-enix does seem to be all into indies. This might make it alright?!? Hey, Final Fantasy 7 is a really long game. Why would anyone do that though? I mean it would have stick too that original game by so much. all you might be able to do is add a few Mini-games & cut some story. If you were to be that insane. Hopefully, they would allow some fun then. Anyways, wish them luck. Don't think it's going to help, but luck non-the-less. FF is a very important thing.

@Sohereiam:

Even if Chrono Resurrection wasn't made for profit, it would have been axed for using the same script written by Square. Also, Crimson Echoes used assets made by Square. That's why that one was axed.

There are fanmade pokemon games that haven't been axed by the publisher. Thats because they don't follow the same script, they don't use official assets, and they aren't for profit. As long as this fanmade FF game follows those three rules, they should be safe.

@everbodypanic:Last year(or early this year, don't remember) Square-Enix changed its police on fan made products, they even allowed fans to continue some of their old IP's for profit as long it follows the original settings and Square is aware of the full script.
