Final Fantasy Bros. Brawl.

Square Enix has announced Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, the third fighting game featuring characters pulled from across its long-running role-playing series, will be released for PlayStation 4 "in early 2018."

The three-on-three fighting game has been available to play in Japanese arcades for some time now, but this is the first time it will be available on a console. The first Dissidia was released for the PlayStation Portable in 2008.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Final Fantasy Fighting Game Coming To PS4

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is developed by Square Enix in partnership with Team Ninja, the studio behind the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series, and--more recently--Nioh. Players pick three characters from a range of Final Fantasy heroes and villains, and then pit them against enemy teams in over-the-top brawls.

Fighting takes place from an over-the-shoulder perspective and hallmarks of the series such as magic and summons are a key focus. Check out the video above to see some Final Fantasy Dissidia NT gameplay.

"Offering strategic online and offline play, players can select from over 20 legendary characters and familiar summons, including Ifrit, Shiva and Odin, to bring into 3 vs. 3 battle," reads a press release. "The game also brings back the Dissidia series' unique 'bravery combat system,' alongside unparalleled visuals and seamless gameplay."

Square Enix has also said that producer Ichiro Hazama, director Takeo Kujiraoka, and professional fighting game players Justin Wong and K-Brad will appear at the E3 Coliseum on Tuesday June 13th at 15:15 PDT / 23:15 BST to discuss the game further.

GameSpot will be providing all the latest coverage from E3, including news, previews, and detailed analysis of all the major press conference. You can find out when Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, as well as the major publishers, will have their keynote events using our E3 2017 press conference planner.

I really enjoyed the Dissidia games for PSP. The video above also reminds me of the PSX game Destrega, which I loved playing as a kid. I'll surely be keeping my eye on this.

@txuzai: Don't forget the giant ass numbers after doing/taking damage. That's beyond annoying for a fighting game.

This game is going to suck. Final Fantasy needs to go back to it's roots and stay there before the name is ruined.

@timmyp1982: Glad to hear I'm not the only one who felt like Xenoblade Chronicles is the closest thing we have to a Chrono Trigger spiritual successor. The music by Yasunori Mitsuda is what seals the deal.

@timmyp1982: I think Yoko Shimomura was a little hit and miss in Xenoblade Chronicles X although I do like a lot of her work in Kingdom Hearts. Of course Guile's theme is classic :) Mitsuda on the other hand did Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, and the first Xenoblade Chronicles with some otherworldly tracks. I don't always love his battle music though, so I'd say Shimomura tends to win in that regard. I'm pretty excited to hear his score in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and I've read that it's already almost complete.

@timmyp1982: My bad. For some reason, I thought I had read she was the composer and thought it was her as I was playing the game. Turns out that game was composed by Hiroyuki Sawano.

@timmyp1982: Wow, I hadn't really considered WiiU emulation yet. I ended up playing the 2nd half of Xenoblade Chronicles (XC) on the Dolphin emu for higher res and convenient save states, not to mention saving on batteries from the wiimote. Even transferred my original wii save, though I grabbed the ROM because it was easier than using my disc. Even though my PC was beyond the reqs, the game still stuttered occasionally - though it wasn't that often.

That's really cool if you can change out the tracks for X on the emu. I agree that the field songs seemed pretty good, and remember liking the barracks song more than the shitty song... I mean city song :P I didn't get very far so I might look into to switching over to the emu since I just got a GTX 1080. What's the WIIU emulator you recommend, and is it easy to trade out the tracks?

I'm so stoked about Mitsuda doing the whole game for XC2 and didn't realize the contribution from ACE+ on XC until reading your previous comment and looking them up. It wasn't entirely clear earlier though, did Yoko work on the original XC, along with ACE+ and Mitsuda? If not when did the 3 all work together? Also, I have to mention Nobuo Uematsu as another great composer. He ended up finishing Mitsuda's work on Chrono Trigger after Mitsuda got so stressed from pressuring himself that he became ill. I think it still has a very distinct Mitsuda sound to it, especially with his intentional use of leitmotif (recurring melodic themes). I've started to realize that the music can make or break a game for me.

There was an article where Mitsuda said he was brought to tears after hearing how beautiful a choir sang for one of his new tracks for XC2. Sounds like powerful stuff.

PS: I'll have to learn more about Takahashi because I've always associated Hironobu Sakaguchi with the greatness of the classic FFs; although the director from FFXII / Tactics / Vagrant story took it in a great direction IMO. I wished they would have continued with the XII battle and exploration style instead of what they did with XIII and even XV. I thought FFXIV: ARR did good though.

PPS: I'm a little buzzed from beer, hence the long comment. I could talk about this stuff for hours. If only there were a Final Fantasy / Chrono / Xeno chat room out there...

@timmyp1982: For some reason, the url with http didn't work, but I think I found the article by searching Reunion-After-Eight-Years. Really strange the url wouldn't work but searching the site takes me to the same url and it does work...

@timmyp1982: Thanks, I'll check out the corrected link and eventually Cemu. I always thought FF4-7 was the golden era.

@Law2309:

And I bet you only played 7 if you had to insult 13 just to make yourself feel better, which is pretty sad.

@SilentAssassin: LOL Dissidia on the psp was fun as hell. Aside from the UI this looks pretty good. I don't have a problem with a game like this since it isn't a mainline entry. Plus it's developed by team ninja.
