For Honor Review In Progress

Understanding the ways of the warrior.

For Honor, Ubisoft's weapon-based combat game, has the makings of a brutal power fantasy. Its bleak, war-torn medieval world is populated by three of history's most iconic warrior classes: Knights, Vikings, and Samurai. Due to the focus on multiplayer, my time playing so far has been brief. The servers have only gone live recently, which has given me little chance to dive into everything For Honor has to offer. Fortunately, I've managed to complete the first of the game's three story mode chapters (in just under three hours). While there's still a lot more to play, what I've experienced so far has me excited to dive deeper into the subtle nuances of For Honor's distinct take on melee-action.

Rather than feel like a full-on single-player experience, For Honor's story mode comes across more like a tutorial for multiplayer. Each scenario acts as a means of introducing you to the game's various mechanics. For example, one stage presents the rules of the "capture the point"-inspired Dominion multiplayer match, while another acts as a tutorial to familiarize you with a faction's specific hero class. The function of story mode has made it an enriching undertaking so far, despite the hollow characterization of the ongoing storytelling that attempts to link each of the scenarios together.

No Caption Provided

While For Honor's story mode is straightforward, there is a multitude of engaging one-on-one battles to be had, even against AI. The ruthless combat system is by and large its standout feature, managing to be both elegant and simple, while displaying a level of nuance in the restraint it demands. Quick reflexes are needed to win, but victory also requires steady, deliberate movements and well-timed attacks. Button mashing drains your character's stamina, leaving you vulnerable to attacks. For Honor punishes recklessness, forcing you instead to follow its more measured pace.

The slow speed of combat can easily breed impatience at first, as it demands you to unpack years worth of habits that faster-paced melee-action games might have instilled in you. Coming out on top in a fight is more about patience and your ability to read a foe than the execution of brute force or button mashing. Even against an AI-controlled warrior, this level of patience and skill is paramount. I can only imagine how this all feels when put into practice against a human opponent, who also fully understands these tenets.

One-on-one battles are fun and challenging for the way they punish you for thoughtless play. But this heavily contrasts with fighting For Honor's AI minions, which frequently feel mundane; defeating them simply requires mindless swinging rather than the calculated execution of one-on-one combat. Fighting these "opponents" also proves middling due to the inability to lock onto them directly. More often than not you'll find yourself swinging your weapon wildly at the air rather than hitting them.

Despite these evident shortcomings, For Honor already has the workings of a well-made multiplayer fighting game. However, I still have a lot to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of each class, and how to exploit them in the heat of battle. So, for the next few days, I'll be fighting my way through the rest of its single-player campaign, and facing off against other combatants online once the servers are populated with more players.

Stay tuned for our full review in the near future, and in the meantime, check out our For Honor footage and features below.

I just hope it's not another 8.
8 means "i really don't care about this, i'll just give it 8 so that people can't complain too much. If they think it's a 6 or a 10, 8 is right in the ball park".

The reviewer doesn't understand the purpose of the minions. They are like creeps in a moba. They give points for killing them, and killing them helps your creeps advance and cap points. You can also use them strategically as shields or backup in fights with other heroes.

@gnnaal12: there's not really that much colour and it's hardly noticeable, I can see you've not really played this game and are just moaning for the sake of it. There is a huge depth to this game once you learn the move set of each character and the variation is excellent, it feels refreshing to play something new after all the endless line of generic repetitive fps sandbox stream of boredom

@wr3ckloose_: there's feats that increase speed. Also you and your teammate are supposed to stay aware of your surroundings. If your opponent runs to double team either you or your teammate around supposed to go towards each other.

@wr3ckloose_: I. Managed to take down 2, once you learn to block properly you keep getting revenge then it's quite easy, 3 and 4 on the other hand needs something tweaking to work better. Iv started seeing more and more teams just running round together and ganking individuals if it starts going that way it will ruin the game. They need to add a buff if your surrounded you take quarter damage or something

Pre-ordered this game with the understanding (based on the perception that Ubisoft created!) that it's a multi-player focused game but with single-player campaign and bots for offline multiplayer mode. Thankfully I noticed the online requirement an hour before getting in the car to go collect the copy unlike some who according to the gaming company cancelled after they arrived for collection and noticed the "online connection required" note on the box. Regardless of this being a MP game Ubisoft did not emphasize properly that this game does not cater for the section of the market that prefers standard offline gaming (which they now lost), in fact I think they created the opposite perception. This IMO is crap style on Ubisofts' behalf and it's becoming much more apparent why people complain about their antics. They can shove for honor sideways where the sun doesn't shine while on the bright side there's Sniper Elite 4.

@wootiniiiii: Maybe you're right... Now that my dissapointed rant at Ubisoft is over after a long wait for the game, I may just as well go pick up a copy. Until my internet issue is sorted out, I'll tie the disc to a string and take it for long walks around the block or you could come over and we can use it to play frisbee in the park. I'll make sure there's cookies and beer.

@Fallenlords69: Definitely, seeing good things about it and also a bigger WWII experience than the usual FPS in that setting... without a required online connection.

@akassassin11: I'm 100% on the fact that it's MP but as Caduceus89 indicated with the extract below they created a different expectation from what's actually been released by promising a full SP campaign. Further to this being an MP game doesn't necessarily mean that you always have to be online to play SP or bot modes - I don't agree that the always online requirement was emphasized at all. To give you an idea, we're waiting for fiber in the area here... 1Gig on the mobile networks here costs avg R 150 (which is about 10 US Dollars) and my mobile signal here isn't strong enough for online gaming. So while in the interim it seemed that I could play the game offline, they've now given people in my situation or similar the finger.

@akassassin11: No I don't think the online only was emphasised at all. It means you can't play the single player campaign or against bots without being connected. So Live/PSN/Ubisoft Club (or whatever it is called) goes down, the game won't work at all.

It is becoming more and more utilised and normally doesn't matter a great deal. But I do prefer single player portions of games/local bot matches etc to be able to run without a connection.

@akassassin11: “It’s a full story campaign, a cinematic adventure where you will play as the knights first as the Warden, then you play as the Raider, then you play as the Orochi,” creative director Jason VandenBerghe told Gamespot.

@Caduceus89: I've been reading that the Campaign or whatever was called mode, serves as a tutorial, the story is bland and you can't see the full potential of the game. That pretty much reminds me of the EA's games, which now days are mostly about multiplayer.

@akassassin11: The idea of an offline multiplayer mode with bots was just as attractive like in the case of the update for Battlefront which made the game more accessible to those who prefer playing offline by adding much more content. Ubisoft unfortunately narrowed down the audience with the online only requirement here.

None the less I personally will not miss out on the combat experience I was looking forward to all these months if it means drawing viking armor on a cardboard box, wearing a bowl with two icecream cones for a helmet and chasing the dog around the house with a make shift broomstick sword while hoping PETA never notices this comment.

Maybe a future update to the game may change things yet.

This is an MP focused game. Did anyone in these forums not read anything before the game came out? This has been public information for 2 years.

Also the comments that its a free to play model are just unfounded. Everything is unlocked in game through playing, and getting coins is easy and fast.

@kargion: I read the part where they assured us the single player campaign would be good and not something they tacked on to get more people to buy the game. I wasn't expecting a hundred hour campaign but I was hoping they put some thought into it.

@Caduceus89: If you guys want single player campaign play Witcher 3, Nioh, etc.. There are others too. However, this was NEVER EVER intended to match or even come close to those. This was always about PVP. I personally love what they did with Story mode.

@norde: Which is why I said, "I wasn't expecting a hundred hour campaign but I was hoping they put some thought into it." And games like Gears of War and Halo are all about pvp but still managed to have good campaigns. Those are the games I'll be comparing For Honor to when more reviews starting coming. Assuming you've played or are playing the game, does it become less of a tutorial after the first stage?

@Caduceus89: Honestly, in ways yes, but in ways no. What I mean is this. The Story mode gets tougher as you play obviously but it has more to do with the fact that theyre teaching you more advanced ways of fighting, set inside a story (Very similar to injustice just alot more to it). It never feels like a true single player...ever, but it does have elements of climax though. So there are aspects when they introduce enemies you actually feel like you want to crush the dudes skull. But I really only play for the PVP. Im playing through the story just to get really good. I have found it entertaining though. But I'm also the guy that would buy COD (no not IW..LOL) and load up MP and go to town. (I did love Treyarchs stories though. I have my single player games to load up anytime I want to get immersed in the story. Honestly if you love strategic fighters, and competitive MP this game is a must. If you don't you probably wont get much out of it.

@norde: I appreciate the thoughtful response. I had fun with the beta (even though I lost more matches against the ai then I care to admit) but was really looking forward to them fleshing out this samurai world that just so happens to include vikings and knights. Yep, samurai rule, vikings drool and knights are tools.

@Caduceus89: Someone does need to make a really good Samurai Game. Remember Onimusha? I loved that game. PS. The AI on this game are wicked.......They do have a good Practice mode though under the how to play, where you can set the AI difficulty. :)

HOW THE HECK IS THIS p2p? way to skimp on the dedi-servers ubishaft! A full priced $60 AAA game with overpriced $40 season pass, some how found a way to incorporate Micro-Trannys into the game! And before you even say... "But, its only cosmetics!!" Ubicrap could've taken all the stuff they're selling for real money, and put it into the game as rewards for playing the game...... Nope. Once again, Greed trumps quality. ,.|..

@rob909e: Please do some research before making comments like this.

1) All cosmetics are bought with coins, these coins you earn in game and pretty fast. You can buy coins with cash if you want it unlocked faster like EVERY OTHER GAME. You do not have to spend 1 dime.

2) Its a mix of dedicated and per hosted. This is how 90% of games do it now.

3) There is only 2 misconstructions that cost only money, and that's extra coins and the season pass.

Not worth buying. Go pick it up at a Redbox. That's what I did. If you played the beta, then you've basically played the whole game. It doesn't get better. Is it a decent game? Sure. I can't say it isn't fun for a little. What I can say is that the fun runs out in about an hour or two. If you enjoy slow paced, almost completely multiplayer oriented games, then maybe this is for you. I can already see this game dying out really quickly and ending up at $30-$40 within a month or two.

@frosty988: Thats your opinion. I played beta, and got it early release and have been playing it nonstop. Love the characters and how each one plays completely different. It feels very much like a competitive PVP game which is what it was intended for. Especially if you have friends to play with, it is a blast. I totally respect your opinion though, just don't say its not worth buying. I got gold edition for $99 and couldnt be happier.
