For Honor Review In Progress

Understanding the ways of the warrior.

For Honor, Ubisoft's weapon-based combat game, has the makings of a brutal power fantasy. Its bleak, war-torn medieval world is populated by three of history's most iconic warrior classes: Knights, Vikings, and Samurai. Due to the focus on multiplayer, my time playing so far has been brief. The servers have only gone live recently, which has given me little chance to dive into everything For Honor has to offer. Fortunately, I've managed to complete the first of the game's three story mode chapters (in just under three hours). While there's still a lot more to play, what I've experienced so far has me excited to dive deeper into the subtle nuances of For Honor's distinct take on melee-action.

Rather than feel like a full-on single-player experience, For Honor's story mode comes across more like a tutorial for multiplayer. Each scenario acts as a means of introducing you to the game's various mechanics. For example, one stage presents the rules of the "capture the point"-inspired Dominion multiplayer match, while another acts as a tutorial to familiarize you with a faction's specific hero class. The function of story mode has made it an enriching undertaking so far, despite the hollow characterization of the ongoing storytelling that attempts to link each of the scenarios together.

No Caption Provided

While For Honor's story mode is straightforward, there is a multitude of engaging one-on-one battles to be had, even against AI. The ruthless combat system is by and large its standout feature, managing to be both elegant and simple, while displaying a level of nuance in the restraint it demands. Quick reflexes are needed to win, but victory also requires steady, deliberate movements and well-timed attacks. Button mashing drains your character's stamina, leaving you vulnerable to attacks. For Honor punishes recklessness, forcing you instead to follow its more measured pace.

The slow speed of combat can easily breed impatience at first, as it demands you to unpack years worth of habits that faster-paced melee-action games might have instilled in you. Coming out on top in a fight is more about patience and your ability to read a foe than the execution of brute force or button mashing. Even against an AI-controlled warrior, this level of patience and skill is paramount. I can only imagine how this all feels when put into practice against a human opponent, who also fully understands these tenets.

One-on-one battles are fun and challenging for the way they punish you for thoughtless play. But this heavily contrasts with fighting For Honor's AI minions, which frequently feel mundane; defeating them simply requires mindless swinging rather than the calculated execution of one-on-one combat. Fighting these "opponents" also proves middling due to the inability to lock onto them directly. More often than not you'll find yourself swinging your weapon wildly at the air rather than hitting them.

Despite these evident shortcomings, For Honor already has the workings of a well-made multiplayer fighting game. However, I still have a lot to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of each class, and how to exploit them in the heat of battle. So, for the next few days, I'll be fighting my way through the rest of its single-player campaign, and facing off against other combatants online once the servers are populated with more players.

Stay tuned for our full review in the near future, and in the meantime, check out our For Honor footage and features below.

Well, crap..... Essentially multiplayer only after all. A regrettable pass for me, at least until it gets cheaper.

Sorry but did people think that this was going to be a single player game? It's been clear for a long time that the focus is multiplayer, if you're not interested in that I don't know why you even clicked on the article. Aside from that this game might be pretty fun, at first the combat looked like a button-mash but after watching some good players on twitch I can see myself sinking some serious hours into this.

Three fucking hours for one of the single player campaigns?? Sigh... I guess I wont be buying this. Even if it's three hours each warrior, nine hours is not enough for this price.

I need more than three hours to experience each world.

@GT_APE: you guys really need to research games before you get all sensitive. This game was never EVER a single player game. Its is and always was a competitive MP PVP game. The story mode is a glorified tutorial providing backstory and lore just to get you ready to kickass in battle against others. If you dont like PVP then by all means dont play it. But for a PVP game. I think FINALLY, Ubi did a great job!

@norde: I need to research games? This game was "never EVER a single player game"?? Let me show you my research from Ubisoft's website:

Story Mode

Playable as single-player and two-player co-op, the For Honor story mode is an immersive tale of larger-than-life warriors plunged into one of the bloodiest wars between Knights, Vikings, and Samurai in recent history."

@GT_APE: Playable.... but not the main reason of the game. And Story "mode" meaning one small sample of the game. If you look at all marketing, PR, Dev notes, the majority is about MP and PVP. Just like, Im not buying Mass Effect 4 or Uncharted 4 for MP. If I go buy ME4 or UC4 and go on forums and bitch and complain about their multiplayer people would have a fit. Its a small thing their adding to appease fans. Everyone knows that game is first and foremost PVE. That's all Im saying. This game is first and foremost MP, PVP

@norde: That's fine but I'm still expressing my disappointment the story mode was more of an afterthought. After reading the Ubisoft website, I got my hopes up.

@GT_APE: where you were living in the past few years? Under a rock? Or you must be new to the world of games. Games with focus on multiplayer or they don't include a campaign or they come with a short one, so stop being amazed like you discovered the cure of cancer

@montruo: Allow me to shame your post with an excerpt from Ubisoft's website. Now have YOU been living under a rock? Stop acting like a little bitch fanboy. Nowhere does it say it's focused on multi-player. I stated my disappointment in the length of the game. Get the **** over it.

@montruo: Well, I am generally nice but when you come in attacking with "are you living under a rock" and "stop acting like you discovered a cure for cancer" that puts people on the offensive straight away.

However, I don't hold grudges. May peace be with you. =o)

Why a review-in-progress? The beta had 90% of the game for multiple days.

@akassassin11: What I had HOPED for was for the below to last for more than three hours:

"For Honor story mode is an immersive tale of larger-than-life warriors plunged into one of the bloodiest wars between Knights, Vikings, and Samurai in recent history"

Given the above came from Ubisoft, what I expected was more than three hours (though admittedly the above doesn't reference the amount of play time).

So I'm just expressing my disappointment.

I honestly liked the beta. I'm hoping that the finished product is smoother. I can see the game getting boring pretty quick but I hope it stays fresh for a while. Kill streaks and extensive combos and fighting strategy will keep the game relevant for me. I got $65 for em.

@bumpyface: its not. blocking and reversing guardbreaks are inconsistent and unreliabe. and the controls are blocky. the multiplayer matches are laggy. The betas had none of these problems, how do you ruin a game in 2 days

@connorman01: Played the past two days, no lag at all. Blocking and countering work every time I get it right. Playing PS4 so not sure if your on PC having these issues, but I am not experiencing any of them.

@akassassin11: it's expensive from our Point of view as consumers, but its extremely doable and cheap for a company like Ubisoft, like i said, they are just greedy and don't give two shits about their fans

This seems like the new Demon's/Dark Souls. People who like it are bashing people who don't like it because it's hard and requires patience.

@zyxahn: Bingo, people call it boring which is odd to me. Its some of the most involved fighting i have had in a game in a while. Then they are killing it for its SP which was never promised to be what everyone is thinking it is and why would you buy this for the SP anyway. This is not dark souls its a melee combat game lol My favorite part so far in MP is every fight is different with how people go about using there hero. Super fun.

@zyxahn: After playing closed and open beta I can clearly say that For Honor is absolutely underwhelming, it got boring after a few hours - repetitive gameplay, music and maps plus objectives. And since when did we start calling a tutorial "story mode"? Because in For Honor that is what we get - a tutorial against bots disguised as story mode. This is basically Chivalry with a new fancy skin, being Chivalry superior in every way. Ubisoft will have to get their paycheck ready for this to get an 8.
