Ford CEO top candidate to replace Ballmer at Microsoft - Report

Sources says Alan Mulally now a frontrunner to become Xbox maker's new chief executive officer.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally is a top candidate to replace outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer as the Xbox maker's top executive, The Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD reports.

No Caption Provided

Mulally denied that he was leaving the Detroit-based car company earlier this month, telling AllThingsD that, "I continue to be focused on serving Ford."

Sources with knowledge of the situation told the site that the 68-year-old Mulally was not warm to the idea of joining Microsoft at first, but has become more interested of late.

Mulally has been CEO of Ford for seven years. Prior to that, he served as CEO of Boeing Commercial Airlines in the Seattle area.

Shortly after Microsoft acquired Nokia for $7.2 billion, it was reported that CEO Stephen Elop would be a top contender for the Microsoft CEO job. However, sources told AllThingsD that there has been a "shift" in recent weeks away from Elop and towards Mulally.

Mulally and Microsoft have reportedly not yet entered "formal" contract negotiations, but discussions about the position are said to be "serious."

In August, Ballmer announced that he would retire in the next 12 months and will officially step down once his replacement is found.

Microsoft's board of directors has established a special committee to direct the selection process for Ballmer's successor. This committee is chaired by the board's lead independent director, John Thompson, as well as chairman of the board Bill Gates, among others.

The board is working with executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles International Inc., and will consider both internal and external candidates, Microsoft said.

There is no doubt this guy has great credentials but for a tech/entertainment company? I don't think so. And another thing, the last thing MS needs is a 68 year CEO. They need some young blood or they will end with more products like surface . . . .

@bubba_1988 I believe Steve Jobs was pretty old when he came out with the iproducts...and he was really young when his company faced default. Just food for thought

Hmm, you know video game and hardware development isn't an easy thing. It's extremely technical involving a lot of specialties from different fields like art, computer science, engineering, music, movie production and more. How can a guy, whose specialty was running companies that dealt with modes of transportation, suddenly take charge of a company that has to deal with all of these very important aspects of development?

He might have great leadership, but one also also has to have a great amount of knowledge in the field he is going to handle in order to help the company make progress.

I think choosing a leader who has experience and expertise in your field is crucial.

@Adenosine You ever design a car from the ground up. You need artists to draw the design, Engineers to make sure the design works, mechanics to build it, movie production for the commercials, technicians for the sound system, nav, electronics etc. Its literally the same thing. You think Bill Gates knew anything about Video Games? You think Bill Gates knows how to draw? Or make the CG cutscenes we're used to? Did Bill Gates have extensive console experience back in his younger days, when he moved into that market?

I wonder how are CEOs born. Is there a CEO farm? Are they being grown synthetically?

I mean... obviously no one can actually become a CEO who hasn't already been a CEO so there has to be some place where CEOs are being created.

@VarHyid You run a smaller company and get bought out. Or you run an internal department and work your way up. Or get poached by another company and given a chance. MS is too big to take a chance on someone and it isn't in that bad of a situation to have to gamble with an upstart.

I wonder if he'll drive Microsoft to employ used car salesman tricks or wheel and deal its way to more success? Will his promises be more than hot air (bags)?

Whatever the case, MS is doing well and going full throttle on their Xbox One launch. There are so many people wanting it, that it won't crash and burn.

I think an outside perspective from an excellent and accomplished leader would be good for Microsoft. Too many people want people from inside the industry taking over, but it is that kind of inbreeding that leads to idea stagnation and complacency. If you are in a certain environment too long, you get used to certain ways of doing things and you get stuck on a single track of thought processes. You do things because "that's the way its always been done." Sometimes it takes an outsider to come in and start questioning the status quo, injecting some fresh thinking while shaking up the establishment. I think Microsoft can use that more than anything right now.

@masfima1 it's not about rich dudes running a company it's about a guy from a car manufacturer running a software company.

Microsoft's problems are not with their product sales. It's with WHAT products they are trying to sell.

If he sticks with trying to sell us what we want and making that the driving force of the company then he can succeed. If he tries to reinvent the wheel and make things run like Ford he is going to crash and burn.

@dussan2 @masfima1 Mulally was the CEO of Boeing before going to Ford. People said the same thing...he couldn't be successful because he didn't know anything about cars. As a manager and leader, its your job to lead PEOPLE and make them work together as a team. If anything, that's what Mulally did at Ford, squashing out the little mini-fiefdoms and streamlining processes. The result was much improved products and a more profitable bottom line...all without much knowledge or passion for cars.

@parchisi @dussan2 @masfima1 I never could understand why people think it's okay for people in the entertainment business, sports, druggies, and even politicians to be very rich, but how DARE a business or business person make lots of money. Sure, I want them to treat their employees and customers right, but other than that, I don't care.

@masfima1 Well, when the dudes are running companies that produce some of your favorite games/consoles/etc and that decision can either help the company sink or swim, then you should care at least a little. Too many people give too few F**ks these days then wonder why everything is going to hell.

@thorn3000 This is the problem with gamers trying to talk about anything besides games. Mulally was the CEO of Boeing and turned them around, so he was an aerospace guy. Then he went to Ford and turned them around WITHOUT the government bailout, so now he's a car guy. Good managerial experience and know-how applies no matter what industry you are in. So far he has shown exceptional ability to lead multi-billion dollar companies into the black. I think this might be a good move for Microsoft if they can land Mulally.

Just because the guy has led multi-billion dollar companies doesn't mean he's a good fit. Microsoft is a tech company, Ford is not. Yes, he may be able to manage a large company, though I think Microsoft has many more divisions to be ran than Ford, but he has ZERO knowledge of anything tech related. He probably doesn't even know how to use a computer!

Elop, even though he ran a tech company, is far from a good candidate. He ran Nokia alright... RIGHT INTO THE GROUND!

I would be a better CEO than either of those two. I at least know what consumers want out of their products. I'm gonna apply and I expect all of you to write Microsoft and tell them Vodoo is the best candidate to run the company (free Xboxes and PC's all around).

@Vodoo He has lead multiple multi-billion dollar companies to success, Boeing and Ford. I remember when he went to Ford from Boeing, people were saying the same thing about him not know anything about the car business..."he drives a Lexus for chrissakes." Good managers and leaders can be successful no matter where they go.
