In 2006, Microsoft stunned the world by announcing that a virtual unknown would be directing the big-budget film adaptation of the Halo franchise. That unknown was Neil Blomkamp, a young South African filmmaker who had won awards for his series of futuristic commercials and shorts. Those included minithriller Yellow, the Robocop-esque Tetra Vaal, the Office-like satire Tempbot, and Alive in Joburg, an ambitious sci-fi drama about alien refugees occupying part of Johannesburg.

No Caption Provided

Despite the backing of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, Blomkamp was inexperienced enough to make studio executives reconsider the Halo film project, which remains in turnaround after being put on indefinite hold in 2006. Luckily, those intrigued by Blomkamp's Halo live-action shorts about Orbital Drop Shock Troops will soon get a chance to see his first feature film, District 9. The first trailer for the sci-fi drama, which is based on Alive in Joburg, hit the Web this week and is viewable in HD via Apple's Web site. Due out in US theaters on August 14, it is executive-produced by Jackson and (ironically) distributed by Sony Pictures.

I'm thinking more like Alien Nation. It also reminds me of the V series.

Did some of you ever seen the mini commercial videos Neil did for Halo 3? I'm not talking about the TV commercials but the ones called "Combat" and "Landfall". Same style and they're amazing.

Looks interesting but I'm concerned that the masses will be discouraged by Blomkamp's style.

Looks promising. He is certainly inventive. Lets hope a bigger budget (even if it's not anywhere near a triple A blockbuster budget) does not make him lazy.

Unheard-Volume Posted May 1, 2009 6:04 pm ET "This isn't even a commercial for a Halo movie! (looks cool whatever it is, but) GameSpot should get their facts straight or at least make sure their article titles are really reflecting an article's content!" Or you could read it correctly. Nowhere does it say this article is about a Halo film, merely that the guy was slated to do one and that this is his first feature film. You're the one who screwed up, not Gamespot. Good job.

It seems like most of the posters don't understand the point of this news post. The point of this being here is show Blomkamp's first movie is coming out and hopefully his first movie will make the wheels turn for the Halo movie. (hoping it will be a hit)

If Blomkamp pulls this off, fingers crossed he'll get the backing to fire up the Halo film again.

To me, this is the ultimate test. District 9 is Blomkamp's first major movie. The financiers of the Halo movie are very skeptical about putting money into it because of his inexperience. If District 9 is a success, that would mean great news to the Halo production.

alive in jaburg didn't make me eat my words.. Seems overrated to me. D9 seems promising at least.. Even though it's based off Alive in Jaburg. Will have to wait until the release, I suppose.

Jackson is famous for his good eye for new talent, so I'd trust him if he really thinks Blomkamp is the man for the job, and cant take him seriously despite the clown-esque name.

I think itll workout for some reason well known directors tend to ruin video game movies so it might be better that the director is some what unknown.

After watching all those trailers I got to say I'd be willing to watch a Halo 3 movie if this guy actually directed it. My real question is why doesn't Microsoft finance the movie. I mean come on, screw 20th century and universal and every one else. Step it up Microsoft and make your own movie studios. And for some reason I can't load that trailer in the apple website. Dang apple and their stupid MOV formats.

Neil Blomkamp is an interesting director, and with these insane Sci-fi influenced short vids, I believe strongly that he would be a perfect fit for the Halo movie, him along with both George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.

I'm a Sony fan but have to say that the mini videos Neil made for the Halo 3 hype were awesome as well as the independent mini films he made. If he were to actually make the Halo movie, I'd gladly go watch it. 20th Century Fox are scums.

I like the movie when it was called Alien Nation... Still, it looks interesting and I'm curious where its going. Reminds me a bit of Quarantine (Documentary style film), which scared the hell out of me

I dunno...After seeing the trailer im actually kind of excited to see what blomkamp has to offer. from the trailer alone, i think that if this movie takes off at least more than projected, then the direction and script will be on a definate go for release on the halo franchise. It seems this will be a defining moment for Blomkamp and his career.
