Forza Horizon 3 Preloading on PC Running Into Issues

Download progress is being reset for no apparent reason.

Early access to Forza Horizon 3 begins tomorrow, September 23, at 12 AM local time. Unfortunately for those on PC, a number of people are encountering download issues when attempting to preload it.

There are numerous reports on Forza's forums and subreddit of players having their downloads reset. That's a real problem for a game that's 49 GB in size, not to mention one that people may have paid extra for to play early--the $100 Ultimate Edition grants four days' early access, among other things.

There seem to be several different issues causing this to occur. For some, download progress is erased after resuming a paused download. For others, it happens on its own as the download approaches completion. Others still run into problems when Windows 10 installs updates, interrupting the download. In all cases, these people are being asked to redownload a huge game from scratch, which is a big ask--some people have data caps, while others have download speeds that make this task a multi-day time investment.

Not everyone has been locked out of downloading Horizon 3 on PC, but this is no less of an inconvenience for those having the issue.

This is the first release of a proper new Forza game on PC. It's also only the second game to support Xbox Play Anywhere, which allows you to buy a digital copy on Xbox One or PC and receive access on both platforms.

We've contacted Microsoft to see if there's an estimate for when a fix might be released. It seems the company is aware of the issue, as a Turn 10 staffer posted on the Forza forums saying the errors are being investigated. It's described as a "high-priority issue that's being investigated."

Horizon 3 officially launches for PC and Xbox One next Tuesday, September 27. It's quite good, as you can read about in GameSpot's review. A demo is available now on Xbox One that will come to PC sometime after launch.

If you want me to consider buying the game, then put it up on Steam with no bullshit network ties to Microsoft or Xbox Live unless it's completely optional and doesn't interfere with the operation of the game when they're shut off. Otherwise, **** right off.

I feel for these folks - I like Windows 10 a lot, but taking a lot of the control away on the updates might standardize their platform more but in may ways its a nightmare for a PC gamer

@xantufrog: it sucks....i can be in the middle of playing online with everything running great and then im hit with frame rate drops, high ping and packet lose......oh look windows updates is running the back round........it seems like i should turn on the PC a hour early just to let it update before i start gaming.....its stupid....

For me PC games always has some trouble. Never had much success with them that is why I just game on counsels. Only had one game not work for me and Microsoft gave me my money back. I've played hundreds of games on counsels over my lifetime. I have played only like six games on PC and each time they seem like they have some bug or crash once in a while.

@snarf24: Stop watching porn on your gaming rig and stop downloading spyware/adware and all that shit (especially the ones that come hidden with mods) would help in making games play properly. I got a GAMING only rig, I use my notebook for the rest, and I have yet to find a game that runs into issues. The only issue I had was with fallout 4 initially when using a terminal, since my monitor is 144 Hz, and apparently they did not support it back then, only 60 Hz, but yeah, point is, most gamers use their gaming rig for other crap, so no wonder games and software won't work.

@phili878: First of all, it's ridiculous how you assume 'most' PC gamers watch porn, or download software infested with spyware/adware etc. And by the way, even if you watch porn, that has nothing to do with the fact MANY PC games run like crap on good hardware. It's a fact ! and we don't have to butter up the game developers for their shoddy work. Look at Arkham Knight, look at Deus Ex Mankind Divided, and plenty other titles. Yeah Arkham Knight eventually got fixed... to a certain extent after being pulled out of Steam for months. Deus Ex Mankind Divided's dev team from Nixxes recently acknowledged they f**ked up their PC port over in the Steam forums. That has nothing to do with watching porn, not that I encourage people to do so. PC ports are screwed and that's the horrible truth. If developers can put their total effort on sincerely creating good experiences for the PC platform, we wouldn't be complaining on forums about stutter, CTODs, graphical glitches etc.

Just played about 45 minutes on the pc and it's just next level sh*t all the way. My specs are under the line although my i5 2500k is clocked to 4.5 Ghz and my extra 8 GB of RAM are enroute today. Don't know if the RAM will help with stuttering going on like in Forza 6 Apex. That sh*t is annoying and seemed to pop at random. Forza is the only franchise I give a sh*t about in the MS lineup and it's finally here on the pc.

@kenmanius: The stutter was the major issue for me on Forza 6 Apex Edition as well. I stopped playing it on PC for a good 4 months when the issues were finally ironed out to a certain extent. X1 is the platform to play these games. I am not sure if you own one though cause if you do, you can enjoy it there until the PC version bugs are fixed.

I am a PC gamer but I won't be playing this on PC. Looks beautiful, plays wonderfully well and stable on my X1. Common sense should prevail here. The PC version of Forza 6 was also stutter-filled, with plenty of bugs compared to its X1 counterpart. PC versions will always have problems. But as PC gamers, we will go back cause once the issues are ironed out, it's the premium version to play. But during launch week, not so much. Anyway, gotta go back to my X1 and enjoy my offroad adventures in Australia !!!!

Look like you didn't properly read my post. They have a shitty store, CHILD, there is no way you are going to tell me otherwise. Thankfully, PC gaming doesn't resume itself to MS turd of a store. They set themselves for failure with their new Lame duck ( GFWL redux ) and UWP garbage on PC. They can't even fcking dominate gaming wise on their own windows platform lol. They tried and failed miserably with GFWL and they are on the same path with the new abomination. They should release sales numbers for all of their games released so far on that half-assed excuse of a store to show what's really up.

I'm going to take every of my point and break it down to you why this store and the way MS are handling games are making it as of right now a shitty store/service:

- UWP : That right there encompass everything PC gaming isn't about. As far as restrictions goes, this has to be the peak of everything i have seen so far(compared to steam, GOG, Origin and Uplay). You literally have no direct access to the games files. Meaning literally no customizations, no graphic overlays, NO MODDING AT ALL. If you play on PC and this doesn't bother you, you might as well stick to console exclusively.

- Downloads speeds on MS Store are slower than the concurrence (Steam, origin, and even fucking Uplay). Ironically enough, MS store doesn't even have speed caps options like the competition. Oh look! A new download issue popped up with Forza lol.

- You can't selectively pick from the get go the drive on which you want to download and install games on (had a running in this crap, when i tried Forza and Killer instinct). As if a PC is a fucking console with ONLY one drive for install. I have a 500GB 850 Evo SSD as system drive (480GB mushkin SSD and a 3TB hardrive too) and i had rather install games on my SSDs which can take advantage of the loading speed (and NO Forza and Killer instinct are not one of them).

- For the same game released on MS store and out of it (Steam), the steam version has better performance. You would think that the DX12 and Windows 10 absolute requirement would somehow give it an edge but amusingly enough it's quite the opposite(See Rise of The tomb raider) And something tells me it's going to be the same when Quantum break gets released on Steam.

- No exclusive full screen option so far....Seriously lol. Exclusive fullscreen offers better performance.

MS has this weird idea that Console and PC gamers have the same needs when it comes to gaming environment. You would think the failure they had with GFWL would have put things into perspective for them but looks like so far they don't get it. They made few changes so far but it's simply not enough. I do command their decision to bring their exclusives on PC. But you look at what the competition does and you offer the same or more, that's not what they are attempting. They literally want to bring the console experience exactly as it is on PC and that's a huge mistake.

Until they fix things in a satisfactory manner, that makes their store not only BARE BONES but also downright shitty.

Now Since you seem so keen on "real points", if you would give me your "real points" on why you think this store isn't shitty on PC. Go on, i'm waiting....

@zerofrust: Well I can give you a pretty good reason. I got Gears of War 4 with my 1080 and I can't download anything from the store without an error. So when it goes live, all I can do is look at it say "owned". Yeah we are all getting owned by MS.

I left mine running while I was asleep in bed and all installed fine when I woke up. Haven't had time to play it till this afternoon but it's appears to be all good. Got to be fair, this Play Anywhere cross buy scheme is awesome. I gameshare with my kids xbox and hopefully we can play together this eve pc vs xbox, or if not ill play them on my xbox instead.

To think, people said you don't need an Xbox if you have a PC. They obviously don't have children/family they can play Co op with using thier PC and thier Xbox.
