Danish developer Playdead followed up its memorable 2010 sidescroller Limbo with another excellent game in the form of Inside. The hauntingly beautiful 2D puzzle-platformer is in the same general vein as Limbo, but make no mistake: it stands on its own and is memorable in new ways. Building on what made Limbo great, Inside goes further in all respects: story, gameplay, and atmosphere. The puzzles are unique in their design and complexity. Combined with the open-ended narrative and eerie atmosphere, Inside is definitely one of the best games of 2016 and is fully deserving of your time and attention. Beatable in less than five hours, Inside is not a lengthy game. But it is striking despite its brevity. A dark and thoughtful experience, Inside will stay in your memory for a long time to come. - Eddie Makuch

Few games challenged us this year as much as The Witness, the new puzzle game from Thekla, Inc., and Braid creator Jonathan Blow. Set on a mysterious island comprising numerous biomes, you solve maze-like puzzles on sets of increasingly complex panels. Each sequence teaches you a new ruleset, and although you don't accrue new items, weapons, or character abilities, by the time you begin peeling back the layers of the island itself, you've accumulated a wealth of new knowledge along the way.

The Witness isn't brilliant just because of its difficult puzzles, though. It's remarkable because of how it communicates its ideas. There is no exposition, there are no obvious tutorials, and there's not a single NPC guiding you along the way. You're free to explore the island, and solve puzzles in whatever order you wish. Somehow, you find your way.

So maybe that's the most amazing part about The Witness. By the time you've solved every puzzle--or, at least, as many as you can--the game hasn't changed. Sure, a few hidden doors have opened and you've activated a few lasers along the way. But the island has remained the same. It's you that's changed. - Mike Mahardy

In a medium where sequels often play it safe, XCOM 2 breaks the mold. It doesn't just build on the turn-based strategy formula of its 2012 predecessor, but also warps it, questions it, and tweaks almost every aspect to create something more tense, and far more rewarding.

XCOM 2 demonstrates a mastery of each of its layers, from its turn-based squad combat to its base-building meta game. It's a deft mix of character development, ground combat, and overarching strategy choices. It also lends gravity to each and every decision you make. Do you attempt a rescue mission with a squad of timid rookies? Is plasma rifle research more valuable than alien technology? Will killing that enemy defeat your chances of destroying the alien satellite before it transmits crucial coordinates?

After playing enough, that's what XCOM 2 becomes: a series of impossible decisions. But somehow, developer Firaxis has made that process fun. It's created a way to learn from failure. Even more than XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2 lets you look forward to starting over, and witnessing every possible outcome in a demanding, challenging, and ultimately exhilarating strategy game. - Mike Mahardy

Given the series' track record, expectations were not high for Battlefield 1's single-player. Despite that, it turned out to be the one of the year's most pleasant surprises. DICE's decision to tell several short, self-contained stories ultimately resulted in a more personal and far more memorable experience than we're accustomed to seeing from Battlefield--or most shooters.

While its multiplayer component is devoid of any of that, it's excellent nonetheless, as DICE has further refined the established Battlefield formula. The series has always done a great job of giving you options. Do you want to be a medic, risking your life to save others? Pilot a tank? Fly a plane? This diverse array of choices ensures that every match plays out differently. Battlefield 1 takes things even further, as Behemoths (game-changing vehicles like an armored train or zeppelin) and weather effects bolster the number of ways that two matches played on the same map between the same teams can feel dramatically different. Combined with the dynamics of playing in a squad and a mode (Operations) that makes matches feel less like meaningless skirmishes, Battlefield 1 is in many ways a high point for the franchise. - Chris Pereira

Contrary to almost everyone's expectations, 2016's Doom exploded on the scene earlier this year with fast-paced gunplay and a hard-hitting soundtrack that instantly transported you back to the series' heyday. Its weaponry, enemies, and locations evoked the same dreadful excitement that Doom and Doom II did on PCs in the '90s, despite the fact that it was created by an entirely different team.

What's apparent is that the creators of the new Doom understand the series' roots. And rather than try to recreate Doom as it used to be, iD Software managed to recreate Doom as we imagined it was, when our imaginations read between the pixels. In effect, Doom resurrected the series in ways we all hoped, but never believed it would. Mediocre multiplayer aside, Doom was easily the biggest surprise of 2016, and a reminder of why we fell in love with first-person shooters all those years ago. - Peter Brown

What a load of bullshite.

Seriously. The list is a disgrace

Great games like Total War: Warhammer, Dark Souls III, Final Fantasy XV and Doom get such low place. While Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen PC and Obduction made no appearance!

These lousy, rigged, biased people and fanboys are probably gonna put No Man's Sky in #1 if not top 3 along with TLG- hahaha, what hogwash.

@kyelo: this again?

Very original.

For your information I didnt even play these games YET - aside from DDDA. However, I base and represent the opinions of many other fellow gamers - based on the general public's very positive feedbacks and high user rating, for said games. So no, not just my 'nice' opinion.

Also the whole point of opinions - is that you can counter one's with criticism -and opinions - of your own, like I was doing, so get over it.

@GunEye: Why do you care so much? This is a list that a bunch of gamers / journos have produced about their own personal favourite games this year. Why do you care what they think? You obviously have your own opinions about the best and worst games this year, so just go with those. I've not even heard of many of these games. You've seen what 5 or 6 other people think are their best 25th - 6th -placed most enjoyable games released in 2017. So what?

Relax. There's no need to go ranting off about how "bullshite" this is or what a disgrace that someone should produce a list that you don't agree with.

Forget it. Chill out and just play what you want to play and look forward to what other great games you might get this Christmas.

@mpl911: The problem with GOTY that actual gamers don't contribute to is that many of the people at GS (or any of these sites) rarely play enough of the games to give an informed opinion...these people are only marginally "gamers"...they play because they are paid to. Don't get me wrong, I am sure most of these folk started off as actual gamers, playing for the enjoyment of it, but if you watch any of the podcasts they all readily admit they finish very few games....and I don't mean don't get all the achievements/ trophys...literally that they play the game for a few hours and move on to the next game because they have to for their job....and some of those games they rank as 8+...how can this group make rational decisions?

Look, I will unlikely agree with consensus on GOTY this year, the year of the shooter, but I trust the masses of gamers far more than I trust any gaming site.

@mpl911: well, sure. I guess you are right.

Perhaps I've gone a bit overboard. My morning started a bit off, so it might have reflected things badly on my comment.

I meant no desrepect, but actually felt disrespect towards very good titles coming from this list.

But still, some of these things are just pretty absurd, and goes beyond the realm and measures of opinions only.

For instance:

Total War: Warhammer is regarded as a very strong RTS and an achievement in the genre. DOOM is praised for revitalizing and reigniting the good old-school shooter genre's spark, received very positively by many players across the board, technically solid to boot.

FF 15 is wildly positively received, despite some disagreemens here and there. It's a very large scale game, with lots of history, technical achievements and uniqueness. It is also an example of a game that constantly inproved and evolved during development taking lots of player-feedback into account. It deserves a much higher ranking. I didnt play yet, truly, but it might just be my top to come at 2016 - even though I will probably only finish it by 2017.

Dark Souls III is kinda mixed but again received much positive feedback, it's a strong SOULS title, which already make it stand out with it's uniqueness. But the level of polish, very strong gameplay and depth - puts it apart from other games. There's no way an average Hitman (Episodic game mind you) will rank higher by any standard.

I think part of the reason the list looks like this ia because of the website's management's choice of reviews. Clearly it goes to the one with most ties and favors.

They let Peter Brown review FF15 -who was negative and skeptic about FF from the start and doesn't seem to know much about FF either.

They let Mharady (pardon spelling) review Dark Souls - and the guy knows nothing about Souls.

I am sure other games suffered similar fates.

But you are right. I am not that troubled with it .

Just game on and have fun. I stopped reading reviews a while ago, unless it's a game I really know nothing about. I decided to judge things as open mindedly and individually as possible with as less game info as possible to avoid spoilers and experience things - my way. I do however - repesect USER FEEDBACK a lot more than Gaming Site's reviews these days. Like Steam's user feedback & review section.

Seems like they are going to hand over the prize to either Dishonored 2, which could be fair but I dunno - it had a poor buggy release on PC, or The Last Guardian. But the notion of No Man Sky might making their top 5 makes cringe. lol

Edit: oh also I don't plan on getting any new games on Christmas. I don't play that many games (in terms of quantity of different games) and don't finish as often. Because I focus on 1 or 2 and invest a great deal of time on them. I am still trying to finish, step by step, my TW3 1st and lrobably only playthrough with over 470 hours of gameplay or so.. i n 2015-16 I also played: MGSV TPP for 600+ hours and DDDA for 420 hours. All single but super comprehensive, slow and enjoyable, very thorough playthrough playthroughs. Oh and I also played The Talos Principle this year for like 65-78 hours. All great games. That's year.

I have a massive backlog of games (ranging back from 2013) with priority to play FF15, and Dark Souls III and maybe DOOM and/or Dishonored 2.

I am looking forward to Nioh (which I will probably play right away) and Horizon Zero Dawn. Which will make my list even longer. LOL.

@GunEye: Yeh that Horizon Dawn looks pretty sweet. Sadly I won't be able to play it (along with any of the UC games) because I'm on the One.

But I know what you mean about putting the time in...the best game I've ever played was Fallout3 where I wasted - I mean invested - more than 400 hours in 3 playthroughs. So far on Fallout 4 I've spent more than 7 days, as it reliably informs me everytime I load the bloody thing up. Also, The Long Dark has robbed me of many, many days. I'll get MGSV TTP sometime in the new year and probably spend something like that amount of time into that too. I was very surprised FH3 and FF15 were so far down the list, and stuff like The Witness were so high. Doom seems to have been really well received...and I though they were going to make a right dog's dinner out of that one! I only ever tried DS1 - and it drove me bloody crazy because I was sooo rubbish at it so you'll never see me on a list of people waiting to buy DS3.

I would think this year's top awards will go to UC4, Dishonoured 2 or Overwatch, as most others think. Maybe Deus Exs might sneak in the top 5 somewhere.

I wouldn't worry about NMS - can't see that one bothering the scorers!

I hope your day gets better.

@mpl911: Hey friend, sorry for the super late reply. Horizon looks like it has fun gameplay, an interesting settings, gorgeous graphics and PERHAPS an interesting story - However - graphics and basic gameplay isn't enough: My biggest concern is that it turn up as a generic SandBox game. I am talking about the curse that is the SandBox game/world design - that is a repetitive, ever-going cylcle of copy-paste objects, sub objectives, and fillers.
I am talking about Infamous Second Son, Shadow of Mordor, Assassin Creed, Far Cry, etc:
Save some prisoners, Clear some areas, Get some hidden treasure, climb some view point.
Just look at that trailer where she climbs that dinosaur - that was the worst: I really loved the concept of a moving living tower - however - it appears that she will have to do it like 30 times - exactly like Farcry/AC/Infamous/SoM towers and view points and outposts. That will get boring, generic and lack any drive, focus or purpose - FAST. I just can't enjoy these type of games anymore.
I really really really hope they won't end up building the game like that - but I fear the worst.
Better to keep expectations low,eh? The base of the gameplay looks very good though. The movement, weapons and gadgets. And the enemy diversity and variety seems like it has a huge potential. I love the main character banter.

I highly recommend you to give Dark Souls 1 a go again one day, just be patient and carve your path wisely. Game has a certain openness to it. Be sure to take the paths that you are the most prepared for and leave greater challenges for later, and don't rush it. I can't recommend this game enough.

Doom sounds pretty good, and once I'll have some space for it I will play it.

GS gave OS the winner and that's a total BS joke. Seriously they couldn't have picked a more generic, mass-appeal, "e-sport" casual audience type game, from a company that make mass appeal multiplayer games - that really goes to show what GS gamers are capable of and what's their worth. They don't have the heart or patience for something more serious.

@GunEye: First off, No Man's Sky really isn't going to make the top 5.

Also, the list looks like this because they put all the staff in one room and let everybody make their case until they come to a consensus, meaning that games that resonate most with the staff will end up high on the list. It has very little to do with the choice of reviewers or with general consumer response.

This is why Rocket League was so high on the list last year. The entire staff was playing it. Same with Evolve. People thought it was ridiculous is was even included on the list, but early on in the year it was clear the staff was having a lot of fun with that game, so to me it was no surprise it was on there.

They explain it here: http://www.gamespot.com/videos/how-does-gamespots-best-of-2016-work/2300-6436190/

They've been taking this approach for quite some time now and personally, I like it. If I want a best of list based on metacritic or consumer reception, I can easily do that myself.

Problem is, GS's explanation is easily glossed over, because people just click on the list. Also, such a list requires knowing the staff a little. And that's part of a bigger problem GS is facing, in my opinion, namely that it's floating somewhere in-between a mainstream website (for example IGN) and a personality driven website (for example Giant Bomb). The turnover rate is too high for people to really get to know the staff and the website is also focusing on mainstream appeal, all the while retaining staff members with distinct views, tastes and personalities. I think most people who come here don't really know what to expect.

@loafofgame: "Also, the list looks like this because they put all the staff in one room and let everybody make their case until they come to a consensus."

Exactly. If one wanted to hear "how the sausage is made," though with a smaller pool of editors, listen to the fifth day of the Giant Bomb Game of the Year series, where they actually record the arguments and discussions in coming up with their Top 10 list. You'll hear many variants and synonyms for the phrase "Is (game) the hill you want to die on?" so many times.

@zmanbarzel: Yeah, that's part of what I alluded to when I said GS is swimming somewhere in-between an IGN and a GB. GS has personalities and with this list they take a GB approach, but that's unclear to a lot of people. And you can't blame them, because that approach is really only explained in one short (and pretty hidden) video.

Of course, it would be hard to do a GB thing with such a large group of people, but it wouldn't hurt if GS was a little bit clearer about their aims with this list and maybe show a little bit more of the process behind it.

I mean, GS is a very mainstream website in many ways, but this list is quite uncharacteristic in that regard. It's not what people expect, I guess.

Totally brainless list. The best Warhammer strategy game ever produced is four spots away from a roller coaster sim, and it's a sure bet that a Blizzard cashcow will get the number one spot. I used to respect this website.

@GreySeven: "The best Warhammer strategy game ever produced is four spots away from a roller coaster sim"

It's almost as if both games are from genres with niche appeals that few among the editors/producers played yet were of a high enough quality that those who had played them got the others to agree that they deserved at least spots on the list.

@GreySeven: Hyped? Posting a bunch of studio-provided trailers, supplemented by videos and a few non-news articles spearheaded seemingly by just a single person? ("Total War: Warhammer" coverage was nearly all the work of Dave Jewitt, a producer/host out of the UK office. Similarly, the "Planet Coaster" beat was Joey Yee's, out of the San Francisco office.)

Now put the two of them in a room with a dozen or so other people with their own horses in this race — some of which are common between multiple people — and you see why those two games landed in the area in which they did.

"Planet Coaster" at least had the benefit of the reviewer Edmund Tran to back it up. As "Warhammer" was reviewed by non-staff, the reviewer couldn't be there to make his case.

10 and 9 look ordinary but apparently they're better than FF15, Gamespot have no clue what they're talking about trying their best to come across as an enthusiast I mean the entire list they've gave out so far is pretty atrocious.

Should let the fans decide by poll the 'experts' don't know what they're talking about because if they did those so called number 9 and 10th ranked games would be outselling the likes of the ones they've rated it above..

@Keitha313: I'd normally say that a fan vote is worth jack squat, except "jack squat" actually has some value, primarily for health and biological purpose.

"10 and 9 look ordinary but apparently they're better than FF15"

So, you haven't actually played "Inside" and "The Witness" yet are weighing judgment upon them? And you wonder why Gamespot (and most legitimate sites) don't let fans vote for anything important.

@zmanbarzel: You're just a fanboy just like the people who upvoted your irrelevant comment, If number 9 and 10 were as popular and quality weighted as some of you reckon then lets compare sales statistics and the volume of people playing it to get a good opinion on it.

So put down your sanctimonious, hypocritical wagging finger the fans know more than you think they do and Gamespot like I said are trying their best to come across as elitist but they're failing terribly I along with many others can tell what they like and dislike from gameplay videos so no I wouldn't put my money towards something I know I'd not enjoy just to merely say "Well I played it so I know I don't like it".

@Keitha313: "then lets compare sales statistics"

So..."Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" is the Game of the Year? "Finding Dory" or "Rogue One" will be walking away with the Best Picture Oscar?

@zmanbarzel: Those games are critiqued harshly because they have a wide variety of players playing it, If those two games we're talking about were played by the masses it would be rated very low obviously worse than a COD game.

Damnit, The Witness all the way down at 9? I'm sad. It's my second favourite game of all time next to dark souls.

Uncharted 4 is going to be Top 5, Forza should've been up there too.

I'm genuinely curious now what the top 5 is going to be.....

Uncharted obviously....but other than that.

Deus Ex? Overwatch? Dishonored? Last Guardian? Pokemon?

I would have thought those would definitely appear SOMEWHERE on the list. Shame to see the seeming lack of Fire Emblem on the list (doubt it'd make top 5). Also a shame we didn't see Tyranny mentioned at all, not even a mention on the PC list. That game is a tonne of fun.

I'm surprised The Witness ranked so highly. Especially for a game I doubt most people completed.

I'm starting to realise that I've purchased a lot less games this year. I'm sure part of it is that I have a mortgage now but looking at the list, all the "best" games are niche indies that are overpriced at launch (imo) or shooters which is not a genre I enjoy. It looks more & more likely that Overwatch will top this list but it's a game I know I would never find gripping.

Can we just have a Witcher every year? Or at least something of that caliber? I guess that's too much to ask for.

I never liked Doom but i ended up buying this years version after renting it for weeks and not wanting to give it back.

Its a pretty friggin good game.

I dont get the love for "Inside". Its another one of those seemingly unanimous "Best of 2016" selections that never appealed to me....even a little. I didnt like Limbo much either, though.

Ive obviously not agreed with all the Gamespot picks but its a solid list, so far. Im reallly curious about their top 5....and i hope Overwatch doesnt win.

Most overrated game of 2016, IMHO.

I found it tedious within an hour.....and for what....a new outfit for a character i probably would never use. I dont get it.

But hey, smoke 'em if ya got 'em.
