GameSpot's Movie Of 2022: Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

2022 was the year of the multiverse, but one movie stood out from the interdimensional pack.

One of the first big fight scenes in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once involves Ke Huy Quan slinging a fanny pack around like a meteor hammer inside an IRS building, and things only get weirder and more specific from there on out. In fact, about midway through, you realize very clearly that fanny pack-based combat is actually one of the most grounded things the movie has to offer. It follows it up with hot dog fingers, sentient rocks, a protracted Ratatouille joke, and improvised sex toy gags. Yet somehow, despite all of this (or maybe because of it) Everything Everywhere All At Once managed to stick the landing and run away with the title as GameSpot's Movie Of The Year for 2022.

It's strange to think that, in an era of endless big-budget Marvel blockbusters and nonstop franchise building, the idea of a "multiverse" has become as close to old hat as it's ever going to get. The idea itself has become less of a story building technique and more of a way for billion dollar companies to cram as much of their IP into a given release as they can--which, don't get us wrong, can make for some pretty fun opportunities to point at the screen and say "hey, I know what that's from!" But Everything Everywhere took that idea and turned it on its head, not by reinventing the multiversal wheel, but by using the trope itself to craft what amounts to an intimate, personal, and above all original story about a family of extraordinarily regular people.

The Wangs aren't superheroes. They own a struggling laundromat. They're in trouble with the IRS. There's the potential for divorce brewing between mother Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) and father Waymond (Ke Huy Quan). Their daughter, Joy (Stephanie Hsu), is struggling to get her parents to accept her sexuality and her girlfriend–a problem made all the more apparent with the arrival of Evelyn's father, Gong Gong (James Hong). It's the makings of a family melodrama, not an absurdist comedy or a sci-fi epic. But this all changes when, suddenly, Evelyn is thrust into the middle of an interdimensional plot full of alternate realities and alternate versions of herself and her family trying to track down a cosmic evil that threatens to unmake all reality.

From there, things very rapidly spiral into absurdism and comedy, spliced in with some genuinely incredible martial arts fight scenes and surprising visual effects. Everything Everywhere had a fraction of the budget and the manpower behind one of the major franchise blockbusters that hit theaters this year, and still managed to look and feel polished and immaculately well made. It dips deliberately into meta-references and nods to other movies, but they're not the hallow winks and nudges of Easter Eggs like you'd see in something with corporate IP coming out of its seams, instead they're earnest attempts to flesh out the world and the characters by linking them to both the actors playing them and the movies that inspired them.

In short: It's just plain, good-old-fashioned filmmaking, on top of some truly outstanding acting, and top-tier cinematography. It just also happens to feature an extended scene of Michelle Yeoh making out with Jamie Lee Curtis while they both sensually caress one another with their hot dog hands. It's art, just trust us.

Absolutely worthy of the Best Picture title (it will win); and best of all, it's a movie that's a load of fun and not just your normal Oscar Bait fare.

@jaydan: "it will win".

If you mean Oscar for Best Picture, I seriously doubt it. Not because I don't think it's great, but because it's not mainstream enough for the Academy.

I hope I'm wrong.

@thecupidstunts: I am also afraid of this as well. Some can argue that the Academy has really opened up more to sci-fi, comedy, and even super hero movies. But when you look back 10 yrs, 20yrs, and 40yrs worth of movies .... it is still very closed off to the traditional 3 act play that is centered on traditional stage play acting. Like long expositions of character actors - which is fine. But dammit these 70yr olds, opinions..., does not represent the landscape of movies today.

@thecupidstunts: If they'll recognize a small movie like Nomadland and give it best picture I wouldn't put it past them to notice Everything Everywhere. And Nomadland was one of the most boring ass movies I think I've ever seen.

@mooglestar: Nomadland starred Frances McDormand, that instantly got it recognized.

@mooglestar: But that is the thing.... the academy with mostly still 70+ yr old theatre centered professionals.... still prefer a character driven and traditional 3 act play movies. They do not like sci-fi, comedy, animated, or super hero movies. Yes, they may award a wild movie here and there, but when you compare what kind of movies they give any award to over many years.... you will see it is a rarity and not a norm.

And smaller movies do just fine as compared to 100+million movie that has fantasy, or rap, or action.

Oh uh, Nomadland was pretty good, though. I still think 3 Billboards was her best vehicle, and deserved more awards.

@jenovaschilld: I suppose. I haven't watched an award show in many, many years. I just hear the winners usually.

Also can you honestly tell me you enjoyed Nomadland more than movies like The Green Knight, Minari, Power Of The Dog, The Last Duel, Stillwater, Pig, Sound Of Metal, Nobody, Lamb, In The Earth, Dune. I believe those are 2021.

LOL, oh god no. Everyone of the movies you mentioned were better.... no, no were... more entertaining, then Nomadland. But like, say a riding lawn mower, that was super well made, dependable, tons of safety features, and corrosion resistant coatings. Meanwhile, my uncle Sammy (true story) just brought over a zero turn mower, he put a Chevette motor, with only 2 gears ... 'fast' and 'all out'. The reverse .... iffy. A john deer seat with arm rests, no safety off if you leave the seat. Camo paint job, and speakers and amp, system that made it louder then the mower. .... I will not lie, I way more enjoyed my uncles lawnmower, then anything Ive seen since.

The thing with this award is to give it to the best made movies, not fan favorites... which would see Fast and Furious as the most award winning series in history.... it should be about the best made movies. And that is regardless of what genre, they are in like say, sci-fi animated, comedy, superhero, etc. Like say... ET, Shawshank redemption, the first LOTR movies, anything Samuel Jackson has done, any Alfed Hitchcock, most foreign films, John Hughes, Princess Bride, Amy Adams/arrival, and so many more. These were incredibly well made and acted movies.... but in genres, that are not well appreciated.

@thecupidstunts: of the last 20 years I've accurately predicted the Best Picture winner 18 times. I only got it wrong one time (The Green Book) and the other time I didn't bother predicting at all (Coda). I predicted and stood by films that were against all odds, like the historical first foreign language film (Parasite) even when people told me it couldn't win because foreign language films "can't win".

I don't listen to people like you, I pay heavy attention to the film industry and I know what kind of buzz goes on in the industry, and Everything Everywhere All at Once is getting the exact preemptive buzz that all these previous Best Picture winners also received before winning the award.

Remember I said this and come back to me when it wins.

@jaydan: "I don't listen to people like you".

OK. I'm just one person with one opinion, I don't have some kind of special insight into it.🤷‍♀️

"Remember I said this and come back to me when it wins."

I don't think this is as important to me as it is to you. But congrats to you if you're right. 👍

@mattock1987: Yeah. Take a look at the current awards trail aggregator: https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/article/awards-leaderboard-top-movies-of-2022/

Everything Everywhere All at Once is leading by a landslide.

The Golden Globes, and it comes with not much of a surprise that it didn't get the Best Picture awards. Golden Globes rarely ever aligns with the Oscars or Critics Choice Awards. I really love The Banshees of Inisherin and it's on my top list of 2022 films, but it's your typical and expected Oscar Bait film that GG loves.

Keep a lookout for the Critics Choice Awards, because it's that one that is a pretty good indicator of what we can expect at the Oscars.

@mattock1987: Well, I know. Lol

I know there's been a lot of naysayers that jump on that bandwagon for the sake of being on that bandwagon.

For me though, I stay true to what I believe in based on my intellectual understanding of how the film business and these awards ceremonies work. I have a great track-record of predicting the best picture winners as well. My methods are pretty well-rounded and not just based on my personal preferences.

With that said: it's not over yet. I can tell you the biggest threat to EEAAO is The Banshees of Inisherin. Also one of my favorites from last year, but to me it's too much of an expected pick, which I don't think the Oscars are really going for that this year when EEAAO is easily the biggest Hollywood success story from last year.

The Fabelmans has the third best chance, and Spielberg might win an award or two, but best picture I think is unlikely.

Top Gun and Avatar have no chance whatsoever. They are only there for technical awards that they will have a good chance winning, but also the mainstream picks just to boost viewership.

Elvis, decent music biopic but no chance winning.

Tar, Women Talking, Triangle of Sadness are all expected choices, but none of them have enough buzz to make me even consider them having a chance.

Great to see All Quiet on the Western Front there, but not gonna happen.

Absolutely agreed -- it is the only AND final multiverse-themed movie that ever needs to be made, and it has EVERYTHING in it. Absolutely worth the watch, in glorious surround w/a big 4K screen and subwoofer.

Fair warning: If your brain cannot handle simple concepts like keeping track of 10+ plotlines at a time, just log back into Disney Plus and watch a Marvel movie. You won't be able to handle this.

@kyungsunorr: I can see why it was too weird for some, but I found the weirdness so incredibly entertaining. It was unlike anything I've ever seen, mostly in a good way.
