GameStop: Consumers unlikely to buy next-gen console that blocks used games

Specialty retailer says purchase intent would be "significantly diminished" if new platforms prohibited secondhand games.

Gamers would be unlikely to purchase a next-generation platform that blocks used games or limits other activities, a GameStop representative told Bloomberg.

No Caption Provided

"We know the desire to purchase a next-generation console would be significantly diminished if new consoles were to prohibit playing pre-owned games, limit portability, or not play new physical games," GameStop vice president of public and investor relations Matt Hodges said.

Hodges' comments come after GameStop shares slid more than 6 percent yesterday following a rumor that Microsoft's Xbox 720 would block used games. This would be potentially problematic for GameStop, which generates a significant portion of its revenue from the sale of secondhand games and goods.

The analyst consensus is that future platforms from both Microsoft and Sony will not block used games. Official word is expected soon, as both companies are rumored to announce their next consoles in the coming months, with the PlayStation 4 possibly coming out of the shadows as early as this month.

Stop the spread of console STDs.

Avoid used games. Purchase only new/sealed or download your games directly.

@WDBmasamunezero What do you think is the REAL cause problems like RRoD? I guarantee 99% of those systems were infected by USED games.

@houtx1836 @WDBmasamunezero How can you guarantee that? Do you have any evidence to back up your declaration? You can't make an assertion like that without evidence.

@houtx1836 I prefer to have a physical copy thank you very much. Digital download is like renting and not owning. You really do not own the property. You are basically renting it. Just wait until that game console is no longer supported, the console dies, you can no longer download that title that you paid good hard money for. Digital is way too hard to keep track of as well. I prefer to showcase all of my games and physically pick them up, open the case, read the booklet, inspect the box art etc.

@houtx1836 @kackarat24 That's going to be HORRIBLE for people with limits on their internet. With next gen games going so huge, Imagine having to buy 5 games in a month. I suspect they'll be at least 5 to 10 GB's if not a lot more. That's at least 25-50 GBs not including movies, music, flash games at 4 in the morning. haha

i'll buy the game system that offers physical games, and that does not block used preowned games. I get a lot of my games second hand, that's the only way i can get to try some of them out. I usually choose to buy second hand games on games that i'm interested in but not enough to pay $60. I find it unfair that every game gets that $60 price tag no matter the quality or effort put behind it.

@Deadman_est1982 Half price doesn't seem viable or believable. $10 off would be acceptable. Plus I don't have to go anywhere at for a physical purchase.

@houtx1836 @Deadman_est1982 They're selling it for 400 whatever; going to take a hit at first just like with Ps3. They get a lot of money from game sales. I think they will do the opposite and start charging $70. You guys obviously don't knwo where you live. This is America. Land of Capitalism. Profit is their only goal. Not our fun.

@Andy72774 It's like giving away a razor so you can sell blades. Pretty much the same concept. Game prices eventually will rise. Like everything else. It's a good question though. What will the games cost? If the 2nd hand market is done away with on the upcoming generation, they sure as hell better not raise the standard retail price.

In a way, I'm okay with this. But let me download the games to all my own consoles and bypass the disc.
Most games I buy new anyway. Maybe Game stop would have to adapt somehow - like improving their customer service model.

Gamestop is only saying what most of us are thinking. Forget the fact that they make most of their revenue via used game sales, what they said is absolutely correct. And, their statement is inline with my thinking and the majority of a forum thread I participated in and read yesterday evening right here on Gamespot forums.

Sure so games start being cheaper on consoles.

The bigger issue is that without used game sales Gamestop would have been out of business years ago. So of course they will say that, and they are wrong. People would buy them. Especially if they balance them price wise.

@CHROMEFLAMIN Actually, you make a good point. Publishers could theoretically block used games from playing on consoles by use of licenses/product key codes.

@bizzySGS I will pay full price for a game as long as it is worth it. I would prefer to have my games new anyways. But, there are always going to be that one you let go or did not have enough money to pick up or you are a collector of sorts, or the game you want is still priced way to high new and it is a deal to pick up used etc etc etc. There is a market for used games. I buy used games when the need arises.

The video game market will never be the same if MS and Sony put into place a mechanism to block used games. There will be a revolt of sorts, at least a revolt against buying the new consoles. I would not buy a new console if they go that route. I am sure MS and Sony will not do it as they will alienate a massive fan base.

If they do go through with it I hope that both of them hit rock bottom and end up like a Turbo-Grafix 16 and then a new console maker rises from the ashes and brings forth a revival of gaming! Or, something like that.

Actually GameStop, I'll still buy a PS4 or Xbox 720 cause I don't purchase used games anyway. GameStop is just scared cause most of their business comes from used games. The used games issue wouldn't even be up for debate if publishers/developers got a piece of the profits retailers make from used game sales. Which they should in my opinion.

No they should not, they already sold the game once.

The sale of used games never did hurt, even in the NES SNES eras did ppl complain then, no they din't.

And i think the market was why more fragile then.

What about clothing cars and houses...

If you buy nothing but used games then MS and Sony don't give a shit about you and frankly they'd prefer it if you didn't even buy their consoles. For the first few years of every console life cycle the actual hardware is sold at a loss. It costs more money to make then they sell it for. They make that money back through games. But if you're buying used, the developer, publisher and console maker don't see any of it.

Every time you buy a used game you're giving a big middle finger to the people who actually made it.

@WDBmasamunezero @redroach No, there is no middle finger. The game sold new. What the owner does with afterwards is no business of yours. The owner can choose to sell it to someone else etc etc etc. I am all for supporting a developer for a game that is worth it. I will pay full price for a game that I feel is worth my hard earned $60. Problem is not all games deserve that $60 price tag

@redroach I don't think developers actually get money from each unit sold. Developers are paid to make the games. The profits go to the publishers. If I buy a used Mustang, am I giving Ford a big middle finger too?

@ppettie @redroach Exactly! Maybe of the gaming industry took the stance to price their games according to the content and how good they are the used game market destroying the industry discussion would not be going on right now.

I would pay $60 for Halo 4 and Aliens Colonial Marines or Gears of War, but I would not pay $60 for Naruto, Marvel Ultimate Alliance or Lost Planet (maybe $25 - $30) Price the games accordingly.

It sounds to me that publishers/manufacturers secretly wish to release nothing more then garbage products and take no responsibility for said garbage. If they are so intent on the anto-consumer, pro DRM crusades then they better be held responsible for all that garbage their industry will be about to create.

You make a single use product, you now have environmental and social responsibilities to literally deal with. Just like every other industry is held to such high standards. This isn't Mickey Mouse baby stuff if they are secretly bent on this happening, without the world of resale, the responsibility costs suddenly are quite real.

This industry has been babied and sheltered from reality for far too long. Let their idiotic anti-consumer console race commence. It won't be all roses and wowwipops for publishers or manufacturers when they release single use generic products which end up filling the garbage bins and landfills due to substandard non-existent outlets to recycle the product.

@PStrife Used games are actually part of the reason quality has dropped; devs' revenue is down and they need that revenue to develop good games.

The rest of your argument is valid.
