Ghost In The Shell Star Scarlett Johansson Comments On "Whitewashing" Controversy

"I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person."

Ever since the live-action Hollywood adaptation of the classic anime film Ghost in the Shell was announced, it has attracted criticism for the casting of a white American actress in the lead role as cyborg cop The Major, who has previously been portrayed as Japanese. Now star Scarlett Johansson has commented on the "whitewashing" controversy.

No Caption Provided

In an interview with Marie Claire, Johansson suggested that she wasn't actually playing a Japanese character."I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person," she said. "Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive.

"Also, having a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is such a rare opportunity. Certainly, I feel the enormous pressure of that--the weight of such a big property on my shoulders."

Johansson's comments follow those made last year by the publishers of the original Ghost in the Shell manga. Sam Yoshiba, director of Kodansha's international business division, explained that he believed the casting would in fact benefit the film. "Looking at her career so far, I think Scarlett Johansson is well-cast," he said.

"She has the cyberpunk feel. And we never imagined it would be a Japanese actress in the first place. This is a chance for a Japanese property to be seen around the world."

The latest trailer for the movie was revealed during the Super Bowl last weekend--check it out here.

Ghost in the Shell is directed by Rupert Sanders and also stars Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, and Michael Pitt. It hits theaters on March 31, 2017.

get over it. this is a hollywood adaptation of a japanese property. naturally, many liberties are going to be taken just like with ANY adaptation. on to the second point... in hollywood, you cannot sell a big budget movie to the masses unless it has a a well known actor starring in it. there are literally no A-list japanese actresses working in hollywood at the moment who would be able to bring people to the cinema based on their popularity in the way scarlet can. for a movie to be greenlit and be given a large budget, you need these crucial pieces to be in place otherwise the film will never get off the ground.

so there are two answers here. scarlet was cast in the role for business reasons and due to the fact this is not a direct adaptation of the source material but rather a loose one just like every other anime/manga/game adaptation we have ever seen. when akira finally gets greenlit, the same situation is bound to happen. no need to cry about it.... prepare yourself now.

Producers can choose whoever they want in any movie, Ripley in aliens was originally a man, and Joseph Feinnes is playing Michael Jackson. Moreover, Motoko Kusanagi was a robot in Hong Kong, but her name is Japanese.

However, with that said I would have preferred to see a Asian female lead as Motoko Kusanagi and I am sure there are literally thousands of great Japanese female actors that fit the role and look similar to Mamoru Oshii's version of Kusanagi.

Now that I think about it, Fan Bing Bing from China would make a great Kusanagi, she is beautiful and a great actor. Many people here may not know her, I think she was in one of the Xmen films, but I saw her in a Chinese TV drama series as the Empress of China, she was great. I think you can watch this on YouTube.

But to Johansson's credit, she was great in Lost in Translation, still on my top 10 best films I have ever seen.

A black actor takes the place of a historically white superhero (ie...Human Torch) and the interwebz crashes in rage.

A white female takes the role of what has been a Japanese female and its just a movie.

Sounds like a bit of a double standard to me.

@beantownsean:

What are you talking about, a lot of people are enraged about this situation. There was even a petition to dismiss Scarlett Johansson from the role: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/apr/15/scarlett-johanssons-role-in-ghost-in-the-shell-ignites-twitter-storm

Both sides are hypocritical if they feel it is acceptable for one side to do it and not the other. That is fact. If Scarlett can play this role, then Zendaya can play Mary Jane.

@doctor_mg:

I was referring to some of the comments in this thread primarily, though I was unaware of the public backlash over Johansson.

I just remember there being shit load of backlash in these forums specifically over the Torch as well as criticism over the notion of a black Storm Trooper in the Force Awakens trailers.

I personally don't care who plays what role.

People were upset over the black storm trooper Finn?
I didn't know that at all. I thought he was one of the more redeeming characters of the movie.

I agree with your sentiments. I don't personally care either.

@doctor_mg:

Before TFA released, there was some discussion about whether Finn was a Storm Trooper or not. Now, some of this was undoubtedly because no one knew his exact role at the time, fair point.

However, there were some who felt a black Storm Trooper was out of place in the Star Wars Universe, assuming they were all white.

A quick search on the web will quickly pull back results for backlash against Boyega.

The most well known Storm Trooper face is Jango Fett, played by Temuera Morrison who is identified as Maori.

Aren't actors supposed to be acting like a character? It's all pretend...They can be any color, sex, size, it doesn't matter, they can still pretend to be anyone they want. If you don't want to see it, don't see it. Everyone was cool with men playing women in Shakespeare...Get over it.

Wow.... the political correctness is strong with this actress. The "weight of such a big property on my shoulders"... right weve never seen a femal protagonist in a nerdy film. Resident evil, Super Girl, agents of shield, catwoman. Given, none of these were anime, but they are comics...

Of course Japanese people won't make a big deal about a white actress playing one of their characters in an American film. To them Americans are white people. That's like if Japan was to make a marvel/dc film, all the actors would of course be Japanese (Asian decent). So the argument that oh the director/Japanese people don't care so we shouldn't either is moot. And plus Scarlet has shown she can sell tickets on her own so I doubt anyone who would be gaining money would doubt the her pick. Personally Scarlet is a little too much famous for this. It's going to be more about her than the actual story, example see Lucy. Was it a good movie or was scarlet just good in that movie?

Oh and FYI for the comments, race and nationality are different. American, British, Japanese are nationalities (places) and not a race.

@dcoutten: I've never watched the anime and I have to agree with you in one point, this film could have success because of her. I won't watch it because I'm not really interested in anime turned into action movie (the only one I watched was Parasyte and was really great but I watched it because I wanted more :_:)

However, Scarlett is hot and this tight skin colored suit makes her hotter. That's the only thing I enjoyed in the trailer >>

The hypocrisy of people and the double standards. "it's racially insensitive to play another race" blah blah blah. I don't hear anyone complaining whenever an american plays a european or vice versa. Or how will smith was playing a white guy in suicide squad. This isn't real people, grow the hell up. People get roles for a reason.

Considering "Motoko Kusenagi" wasn't confirmed to be her real name and the cyborg model she uses is of a european design, people harping on about white washing baffle me. She's white in the animes, ffs. Not to mention the people behind the original animated movie said Scarlet Johansen was a fantastic choice.

But then there I go assuming people are getting up in arms without doing any research or having any understanding in the subject and we all know that doesn't happen.

"Don't worry guys, we made everyone white."

Pretending to be another race is not what whitewashing is, that's called blackface. Replacing other races with white characters is the issue.

If they're telling a Westernised version of the story set in New York or something rather than the fictional Japanese city because it's a film for Western audiences, then it's not necessarily a bad thing. The Departed was great & that was a Western version of Infernal Affairs. They just need to be open about what they're doing.

In terms of ScarJo 'benefiting the film', I'm sure her name sells a lot more tickets than say, Doona Bae but I don't think anyone would argue against that. Do we need to be less scared of having non-white leads & give other the chance to have the kind of star power that will sell more tickets? Furious 7 did pretty well.

@louixiii: Yeah, pretending to be another race. That's what I said.

Casting a white person in a black character's role & having them go full Robert Downey Jr (as satirised in Tropical Thunder) to play them would be blackface. There isn't really a word for pretending to be Japanese so I was generalising. Yellowface maybe, but it's not so well a recognised term.

To be fair, whitewashing a colloquial term & there isn't a real definition for this use, though it has plenty of other definitions. Either way, dismissing allegations of whitewashing because they "never imagined" casting a Japanese actress in what was traditionally a Japanese role is completely sidestepping the point.

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: True...there really isn't a term to describe that. It's sad that we have words like this to begin with. I wish we were all f***king color blind because race and color is one of the biggest reasons why we can't achieve world peace. The smartest creatures on earth...yet we can't achieve something as simple as that...smdh. Why do I feel like an experiment gone wrong?

Not all the characters are white though.

Boma* is being played by an East African (Black)

Saito is being played by Japanese person

Daisuke is being played by Japanese person

Togusa is being played by a Singaporean

*Edit, was Batou, but I meant Boma.

@doctor_mg: You sure? It looks like Batou is being played by a Danish guy.

Of the top 5 actors on the IMDB page, two are American, one is Candian, one French & one Danish. All pretty white looking. There are definitely some Asian looking names further down the list but the point is that Hollywood execs are scared or non-white leads, not diversity completely.

Sorry! I meant Boma.

Also, Togusa, Daisuke, Saito are incredibly imperative to the show. They are lesser known actors in America, so IMDB probably sorts the lesser known actors towards the bottom.

Togusa is the second most popular character from the show.

"Whitewashing" smh she is an actress she can play whatever/whoever she wants including a Japanese women since it's just make-believe any proof that an equally qualified Japanese actress was passed up intentionally?

This sort of reverse racism divides people and is only helping the far-right. Racism can not be fought with racism.

I use to feel the same way as people who complain about whitewashing but if you think about it, most anime/manga characters may be based on japanese people but at the same time, they do not all look japanese. Matter of fact, the look of of anime characters tend to look westernized. I mean Goku's supersaiyan form is blood with blue eyes, ever seen a blond japanese person? For that matter ever seen a japanese person with green, red, purple hair or eyes...

@coldice: I think pink purple etc is different. But I agree! If they are basing this character off the anime, then blame the creators of ghost in the shell. Cause the character doesn't look definitively Asian. In the cartoon she looks closer to white. Added with the FACT that many Japanese fawn over white people like white on rice. It's a social problem in Japan. They don't even know why they appreciate Caucasian features more than their own. But I have seen 2 Japanese women argue why whites are placed on a pedestal in Japan.

Girl on left: I think it's because the features are nice and accepted.

Girl on right: Bitch, you fuckin crazy...

@x_darksouls_x: They do fawn over white people, tbh it's more like worship, it's just a fact unless you're talking about older generation of japanese people. Of course, this doesn't apply to all japanese people but it applies to most definitely. I mean Jeez, you can rent white people in China for godsakes to promote your new business or hotel or pretend to be a doctor...look it up if you don't believe it.

Very convincing argument there but I dont have to I have lived there as a white person all because they are welcoming you as a guest or want to emulate western fashion trends does not mean they "worship white people" not every country is full of uneducated xenophobes.
