God of War movie a step in 'bold' new direction - Report

God of War film writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan say that the project will be different from films like Clash of the Titans and Immortals.

The upcoming God of War movie from Universal Studios will aim to differentiate itself from other films with similar themes.

Kratos' big-screen debut is being written by the minds behind the latest Saw movies.
Kratos' big-screen debut is being written by the minds behind the latest Saw movies.

According to the film's writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (who previously wrote Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D), the big screen adaptation of Sony's popular gaming franchise will improve on films like Clash of the Titans and Immortals by taking a step in a bolder direction.

"Those movies can inform the God of War to step in a more bold direction," Dunstan told ShockTillYouDrop.com.

"Not to join those ranks, but to stand head and shoulders apart like other reinventions have done within that genre. The satisfying element is to look at those movies as a commentary on the genre, and now say something different."

Melton also revealed that Sony encouraged the duo to make the movie different from what's already out there in the same genre.

Charles Roven and Alex Garnter, producers of the forthcoming film based on Naughty Dog's Uncharted action franchise, are producing the God of War movie via Atlas Entertainment.

No mention was made of a director or actors for the film, and a release date has not been nailed down.

God of War: Ascension is due out in March 2013. It is a prequel to the original trilogy, and the first entry in the series to sport a multiplayer component. For more on the project, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

I could see Jason Momoa as Kratos. Now if fans want the video game voice. they can do two things. either have a voice over with Terrence TC Carson who is kratos voice in the game or mess with his voice a lil on the computer. They did voice overs plenty of times. I think director wise the saw writers are wrong. Frank miller who did 300, Sin city, and upcoming movie the wolverine. He would fit good. I would say the writers from the game but writing a game and movie is two different things. I didnt like the writing in clash of the titans but the actions and good use of the gods were good.

Well, with the superbowl commercial they have shown us that they can bring Kratos to life. and like so many others, i also waited for movie(s) based on GOW games. But as the years goes by and more games come out, how will the movie really be like. We already know the Kratos story and that we do not know we will find out in Ascension

And remember just because writers suck, does NOT mean they will suck very time. Still i wonder, why arent they hiring the people behind the script of the GOW games to write the movie(s)? If anyone can write Kratos script, it is them.

I am not sure what went wrong with Clash&Wrath of the titans or Immortals. I have to say that "titans" are better then the immortals. and i guess it has to be the storyline. I first saw a teaser of immortals - i went WOW, this is how GOW should be like and after i seen the film i realzied ONCE again that the makers of the trailer are better at their job then the once behind the acctual film. if they are the same person(s) then those sure are better at making trailers then movies. Immortals was a huge fail, it could have been epic.

Well i say that take the best parts from "titans", immortals, 300 and even sparatcus (tv). and really go out on a limb to make the movie(s) as close to the games as possible; as it would be if it had been made in animation. Meaning, they should not ONLY hire the writers, but they should hire the director and who ever else is needed to from the game studio(s). if they can make awesome games, they sure will be able to pull off the same caliber movie(s), with the right help and budget.

I have been hoping for a God of War Movie ever since the first game came out, there's a lot of potential in the GOW concept to make one hell of a movie (or movies), but seeing who the writers will be I think I will pass. I mean come on, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan??? What were you thinking giving a master project into the hands of these guys! I think I'm gonna cry. No offense but you guys have a tendency to turn diamant into stinky poop!

If you want to turn this into a serious movie I would suggest people like Christopher Nolan and/or Zack Snyder.

God of War could be a great action movie. The franchise does actually have a story that could be transformed into something entertaining and worth watching, unlike many other action movies that aren't based on games. I was disappointed about how Clash of the Titans ended up being, but I haven't watched Immortals. Anyway, I like that they're trying to make it stand apart from other films in the genre. That kind of thinking seems to be severely lacking both in the movie and game industry, although there's no point in making something different if it's not good enough.

@Bladestop I think it is at least a good indication that it will be as gory as a God of War movie has to be- my biggest fear was that they'd dumb it down to a PG-13 (which was the biggest problem with the Titans movies as well as the biggest strength of 300 and Immortals). I'm not saying that it will definitely be incredible as these guys aren't exactly known for writing oscar contenders, but at least they are known for writing very bloody stuff

Immortals was sooo bad I dont know where to start...so I just wont...and The Wrath/Clash of the Titans...way below average...very poor acting and waste of special effects in my opinion. Hopefully they wont waste this franchise.

They should get Nicolas Winding Refn on it so he completely ignores the script that the saw guys made and makes his own movie like he did with Drive.

@squidracerX He tore like over half the script out of the movie and rearranged/changed a bunch of scenes. He might as well have ignored it lol

@squidracerX @Germandude2 Yeah Valhalla Rising is a bit of slog- the first 15 minutes or so are awesome but then it commits hard to the "journey to hell" metaphor and puts the audience through some weird emotions. In a way it is effective, but it's kind of like Requiem for a Dream; objectively it's well made and very unique, but once you've seen it once there is really no reason to put yourself through it again. Drive on the other hand seems to get better every time I watch it.

@Germandude2 He is the same guy that did Bronson right? I loved Bronson too! Then I bought Valhalla Rising and I was not as impressed, it had huge potential but was sooooo slow... Severed Ways was very similar but better, (still slow). And I don't mind slow movies. Heck Drive was kinda slow. I love Japanese movies and those are not "American pace". But Valhalla Rising just had pointless shots.... I was falling asleep. Especially when it started so high with good bloody fights...

A film like this to me would need directors more like Zack Snyder (300) or Stephen Sommers (The Mummy 1 & 2, Van Helsing, G.I Joe), James Cameron (Avatar, Terminator 2) or possibly Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy) or Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) or even Guillermo Del Toro (Blade 2, Hell Boy 2) ....1 of these guys perhaps or some other awesome director can make me atleast have some faith in the success of this film as the writers already don't exactly have me all hyped for the story!

Hehe, oh okay i see!! I think that whoever is the director along with the writers should work closely with David Jaffe to atleast take a step in the right direction and execute this adaptation the way it should be! I'd need to see a preview clip before i'm convinced about my thoughts on what this will turn out like though!

@Viral-venom13 haha well its opinion, so you aren't wrong if you like them (or if you hate them). Critics can be wrong too. But GI Joe left me angry that I watched it and someone got paid to write it. And the Mummy moved me from being indifferent about Brandon Fraiser and Racheal Weiss to hating both of them. Out of the group, IMO, Van Helsing was okay, but again, didn't live up to the commercials for me. I actually don't even remember it that well? BUT I am a movie snob, so I am overly critical, i admit it!

@onyxdragon7 Now that's a hard one! Michael Jai White, Dwayne Johnson or Vin Diesel do have the body to play Kratos but their acting isn't exactly of an adult level. Djimon Honsou would be a good choice but it's not logic for Spartan general to be black. Maybe a pumped up Tom Hardy would do the job? Even a Jake Gyllenhaal could be up to the task after seeing him in End of Watch. Anyway I would stay away from all the Expendables Action heroes and similar.

@onyxdragon7Anyway, if they are going to stick with Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to write the movie they could take Shia Labeouf to play Kratos for all I care. It won't be worth watching anyway.

Nolan, Snyder... save us please!

I think its a good call, as we all know how the story plays out and ends. Some changes and differentiation will make the movie worthwhile to watch. However, it is also very risky to alienate and ruin the story, so its a very delicate matter.

When the writers of the Saw movies say they're taking something in a bold new direction, expect a sub-10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
