God of War movie a step in 'bold' new direction - Report

God of War film writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan say that the project will be different from films like Clash of the Titans and Immortals.

The upcoming God of War movie from Universal Studios will aim to differentiate itself from other films with similar themes.

Kratos' big-screen debut is being written by the minds behind the latest Saw movies.
Kratos' big-screen debut is being written by the minds behind the latest Saw movies.

According to the film's writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (who previously wrote Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D), the big screen adaptation of Sony's popular gaming franchise will improve on films like Clash of the Titans and Immortals by taking a step in a bolder direction.

"Those movies can inform the God of War to step in a more bold direction," Dunstan told ShockTillYouDrop.com.

"Not to join those ranks, but to stand head and shoulders apart like other reinventions have done within that genre. The satisfying element is to look at those movies as a commentary on the genre, and now say something different."

Melton also revealed that Sony encouraged the duo to make the movie different from what's already out there in the same genre.

Charles Roven and Alex Garnter, producers of the forthcoming film based on Naughty Dog's Uncharted action franchise, are producing the God of War movie via Atlas Entertainment.

No mention was made of a director or actors for the film, and a release date has not been nailed down.

God of War: Ascension is due out in March 2013. It is a prequel to the original trilogy, and the first entry in the series to sport a multiplayer component. For more on the project, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

@jeffbordonaro @connorx94 Exactly. No one thinks that Mortal Kombat is a bad game just because the movie sucked. In actuality when a game is being turned into a movie it is usually a good game that sold very well. You don't see movies being made of bad games that don't have a fan base.

Personally, GOW does not need to be a movie.

Secondly, the writers of Saw IV and up are writing this move.

-shakes head- I do not see much promise in this even if they claim they will have this movie be a step in "a bold new direction"

Just what is this bold new direction, then? Oh, there's no word on that. So does this honestly qualify as news when it's essentially just the writers saying that their film is going to be better than all of those 'other' films in its genre?

I can't help but wonder what they're planning on doing differently (if they really are), though. I can see them getting rid of elements which feature in the other films - a love interest, 'good guys', all protagonist dialogue which isn't very, very angry - but I'm not sure what they could add to it other than intensifying the gore & the yelling.

@Hairygrim Bold new direction is usually code for nothing like the source material except for the character names.

@Carpetfluff The 'bold new direction' here is in relation to other films in the genre, rather than the GoW series itself.

I'm hopefully optimistic. The problem is that '300' has already been done. It's basically going to have to be a '300' style movie except with an epic quest and an absolutely horrifying protagonist.

Either way, I vote Brendan Sinclair for the role of Kratos. He seems to have a very good understanding of his emotional range =).

@ExtremePhobia Except the era I don`t really see the resemblance between God of War and 300. A God of War movie has the potential to be pretty awesome...odds are it won't be, though. Because it's a game-to-movie and the movies these two did suck.

Im sort of hoping for a film that is very '300' in style. But I do always hate games being made into films and vice versa so I have very little expectations for this.

Quote from writers, "I actually have not played GOW but the cover is cool man! There's like this angry bald guy. I can really work from there. I want to write a totally new story because we need to appeal to a wide audience. This will be a bold move. It will be a bit of everything, lots of romance, comedy, a bit of sci fi elements and 1 or 2 musical scenes. It will be set in present day middle east. This will be totally different from Clash of the TItans. I'm very excited to be making this historical film, God of War: Bald Dude F***ing Shit up!"

Yes, nothing spells "bold" in Hollywood like dudes who are called in to squeeze the last few million out of a franchise after it has already started to suck. Why not just give up entirely and bring in Uwe Boll? At least directors like Paul WS Anderson and Christophe Gans love the games they're mutilating for the big screen.

Game has everything they need to make a movie adaptation without fucking up the story. I'm just sad to see the "minds behind the latest Saw movies" won't be a shallow, boring gore fest. Seeing how far the latest Saw movies strayed from the original (which was actually good) doesn't give me good hopes for God of War, but it's one of my favorite game series so I'll keep looking for news on the movie.

@snova9308 It`s not. I fucked up the writing in the original comment, what I mean to say is that the latest Saw movies were shallow and overall terrible movies. If the ones behind those movies are responsible for God of War we might be in for another failed video game to movie attempt.

I know there are lots of gamers and all, but this isn't exactly a Marvel or DC superhero movie. I don't think the box office results will be all that good even if it turns out to be a good movie. I could be wrong, but unless the general non gaming public sees it as a cool sci-fi/mythical or action adventure movie, one would think that the only turn outs will be gamers and young adults (18-35 mostly males). I am not suggesting that the movie will fail only because of this, but I think the odds are already stacked against them IMO.

Clash and Wrath of the Titans were passable action movies with lots of flash and very little story, but Immortals was just a bad film in my opinion. It was trying too hard to be 300, and for some inexplicable reason they portrayed the Titans as weird, zombie looking things trapped in a box. God of War shouldn't have to try very hard to surpass all 3 of those films but I'm not happy that these guys wrote many of the worst Saw films (Saw 2 being the absolute worst). Lets hope the God of War film series isn't a convoluted disaster of impossible plot hole fillers.

I would rather see an animated version than a live action adaptation. I am not sure how well live actors and special effects will work for a God of War movie.

@Total_mischief @ZOD777 I know what you mean, but there are epic boss battles that are not really live actor friendly if you follow the script somewhat. There will have to be some major special effects other than blood like 300. I am not so sure that it will be any better to watch than Clash of the Titans in the end. 300 didn't take much to pull off.

@ZOD777 To be fair, Wrath of the Titans was ten times better than Clash of the Titans, and they pulled off the Chronos thing pretty well I think. My main worry are the two directors, the last Saw movies were terrible. And just as a side note, it took a lot of work to pull off 300, everything but the characters and a few props is exclusively VFX.

This movie by all intent and purpose should be insanely badass. It just sucks we are talking about Hollywood and their ability to screw it up to the point where you have to ask yourself, how, just how? You wonder how incompetent some of them really are.

@tightwad34 Yeah. I'm not even going to mention the Uwe Boll movies, but even the Hitman and Max Payne movies were pretty bad. Max Payne. They fucked up Max Payne. The story was laid out on a silver platter for them and they fucked it up. How did they even do that ?

How is it that every time I hear about a movie adaption of a game, when I read the details and find out who they have working on it, my first reaction is almost always abject horror? They announce a Deus Ex movie, I think, "sweet, that has promise." I read the article. "I never asked for this." They announce a God of War movie, I think, "not my cup of tea, but fair enough." I read the article. "God help us all."
