God Of War Ragnarok Ending The Norse Saga After Two Games Is Like The Lord Of The Rings Box Set, Barlog Says

"Being able to condense it and feel like that experience I had when I got the extended edition box set of The Lord of the Rings."

God of War: Ragnarok is the second and final entry in Sony Santa Monica's Norse saga, and now series veteran Cory Barlog has shed some light on why the studio is planning to wrap things up with Ragnarok. Speaking to Kaptain Kuba, Barlog said there are "several reasons" for this, the first of which is that games of this size and scale simply take a very long time to make, and Barlog doesn't want the saga to drag out too long. Also in the interview, Barlog compared the God of War Norse saga to the extended edition box set of The Lord of the Rings.

"I think one of the most important reasons is the first game took five years. The second game, I don't know how long it's going to take, but I'm just going to throw out that it's going to take close to a similar time to do this. And then you think, 'Wow, a third one...' we're talking a span of close to 15 years of a single story. And I feel like that's just too stretched out. I feel like we're asking too much to say the actual completion of that story, taking that long, just feels too long," Barlog said.

"And given where the team is at and where [director Eric Williams] is at with what he wanted to do, I was like, I think we can actually do this in the second story."

From the beginning, Barlog wanted to tell a story about Kratos and Atreus--they are the "core of the story's engine," as he put it. The complexities that stem from that relationship have plenty of room to grow, but Barlog didn't want to stretch things too far.

"The complexity radiates out, like ripples in a pond. We could make it an ocean, and have those ripples just go for thousands of miles. But is that necessary and is that beneficial, or are we feeling like you know what, it's just spreading it too far apart?" Barlog said. "The ripples get too far apart and you sort of lose the plot a little bit."

Being able to condense the God of War Norse saga story into two games is similar to how you could sit down and watch all the Lord of the Rings films and feel like you were told a complete story that had a strict beginning and end.

"Being able to condense it and feel like that experience I had when I got the extended edition box set of The Lord of the Rings, and I was able to say, I can sit down and have like 13.5 hours of this experience playing them one after another back to back, and I just thought that was fantastic. Amazing," he said. "So to be able to say, you could start God of War 2018 and then play God of War Ragnarok and feel like you're getting the entirety of the story. And I kind of want that to happen before my kid is in college."

Barlog also said a two-game arc for the God of War Norse saga felt right for what Eric Williams, the new director, had in mind for the game.

While Ragnarok is the final entry in the Norse saga, Barlog said he plans to make a "big splash" with a different project as his next game, though he didn't share any details.

Ragnarok launches in 2022 for PS4 and PS5. For more, check out GameSpot's roundup of everything we know about God of War Ragnarok.

i heard in the beginning of the second game thor kills kratos with a golf club to the head over the events of the last game, and then atreus goes seeking revenge on thor and kills all his godly friends in the process, and in the halfway mark u switch to play thor and u realise that revenge is bad.

I would like to see Santa Monica do something else besides God of War. At one time, there was supposed to be a game about space that was started eleven years ago, but then everyone on that team was let go. What else does Santa Monica have in besides God of War and a publishing arm for indies on PlayStation? Same thing with other studios. Guerrilla has been working on Horizon since 2012 or so. Will there be a third game, or will the team move on to something else? San Diego will always make sports game just Prolyphony will always make Gran Turismo. I am sure Sucker Punch is working on Ghosts of Tsushima 2. Media Molecule probably won't develop games anymore. I would say that the team will move on to software and engines. The people came together and did what they wanted to do, and I could see them moving on to other things.

It would be very interesting to see all existing IPs wiped away and everyone start from scratch to see what would become popular. No Mario, No God of War, No Halo, No Call of Duty. What would gaming look like if every game made was a new property?

@laurenriley3332: I think It is fine to release sequels of AAA games, other studios should come and try to compete with their games by releasing fresh IPs. While on the matter, AAA games shouldn't be extended like what Ubisoft is doing with Assassin's Creed, their Origin, Odyssey & Valhalla have different settings & amazing nonetheless, but the attachment to the Title "Assassin's Creed" doesn't go well.

Am I the only person just now noticing that his last name is NOT "Balrog," and that it took him mentioning LotR in order to break the spell?

@Pyrosa: The typo will still exist whenever they mention his name. The only solution I can find is to just ignore him. He’s too much of a melt for me to have any patience for him anyway.

You’re absolutely right, and this idea that whenever someone has high standards or expectations it’s just ’entitlement’ is so stupid and like the enemy of innovation.

I fully support making it just the two games. I always hate the feeling of, “Well, great… Now I have to wait several more years to get the next part of this thing.”

As long as they keep making God of War games and keep Kratos around, and just continue doing different settings and mythologies.

@stickemup: He's in FNBR, so his epic tales will never end You haven't known Kratos until you've stood atop a mountain doing The Macarena, flowing into a Conga Line, a few dozen meters of Gagnam Style, then finishing up with a Hot Marat alongside Kylo Ren, Snake Eyes, and The Predator.

@Pyrosa: I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. Is any of that even a sentence? What is FNBR?

What is with gamers making up acronyms for every game and assuming everyone knows what they’re talking about? You can do that if it’s a comment thread about that specific game, but FNBR can mean anything.

That's because the Lord of the Rings is one complete story. Despite common belief, it is not a trilogy. Tolkien wrote a single novel, it was broken into three parts for practical reasons by the publisher and has been that way ever since.

That's why Idia is out of the question. I too would like this to go in India after Egypt, but its just not happening. The word is too soft, and by the time we would get to GoW set in India, it will be even softer than it already is.

@hardwenzen: Games with a desert setting will be everywhere after Dune sends everyone into a flurry of ecstasy. Egyptology has only two realms but it would be good to see the franchise return to it’s brutal roots.

@bloodbornelore: I'd argue there have already been too many desert-based games, and that most of them have been boring.

Even suffering through ~15 hours on Pandora so we could finally enjoy new locations in Borderlands 3 was too much.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: I just told you. Vertical level design after Loki obtains Freya’s Falcon suit.

There are nearly 4,000 gods one can worship. There’s no point coming up with another one when we now have thousands of silly superheroes to fill that void.

I'm totally fine with it being 2 games, but what a horrible comparison.
Lord of the Rings is exactly what you should never point to as a concise, well paced story.

More to the issue at hand though, they made some nods to egyptian gods in the previous game... if we are wrapping up the Norse stuff it would be way cool to venture off into that. Way more fascinating than greek and norse mythology, that's for sure.

@skyhighgam3r: The original book was a delightful series of run-on sentences and what we now call "off-screen action."

The films "captured" all of that off-screen action, but also captured the run-on sentences somehow.

Good, I'm actually glad we're getting a complete story in less than a decade. Meanwhile, Square Enix is promising to FF7R story in 15-20 years? **** that.

And to quote the LOTR comparison, at least movies watchers only had to wait 3 years to get the complete masterpiece. Those were the days.

There is something weird about saying it makes sense to end after the 2nd part while using a trilogy as a comparison.

@pillarrocks: Ugh. No. That means you get an incomplete game. It was amazing not having DLC on the last one. More games need to go back to that. I remember the days where when I paid $40-$60 I got a complete game. DLC needs to go back to just being something that gets put in the next game, at least most of it, like it used to be.

there can always be couldveshouldve ideas with people, but thats a different thing that even dlc might not fulfill

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: How, you ask? By including at least most of the epic battles and main players of Ragnarök. If you weren’t so against reading it, I wouldn’t have to elaborate and explain that Angrbrodr is too young to be the mother of monsters. Nobody wants to acknowledge that a 14 year old has given birth to three “monsters” because despite the fact that teen pregnancy exists, it’s distasteful to include it for that particular Jötunn. Am I talking gibberish here or do you know Ragnarök? I can never tell.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Because the subtitle is “Ragnarök” and nobody wants to see another neutered Ragnarök. Those battles would be a shame to leave out.
