Now Playing: God of War - E3 2016 Gameplay Trailer

The trailer of the game opens with a long-bearded Kratos and his son, Charlie, hunting through a snow-laden forest. It moves on to depict a dramatic battle against a titan, in which Charlie misses his target and accidentally fires an arrow into Kratos's shoulder.

The gameplay video can be found above.

Smaller details in the gameplay demo show what appears to be RPG elements, such as archery knowledge points, as well as a Spartan Rage timed-ability during battle.

Later the gameplay briefly switches control between Charlie and Kratos. The trailer concludes with a tantalising glimpse of a dragon flying over Kratos and Charlie, foretelling a grand battle later in the game.

As leaks suggested, the game will be based on Norse mythology. No release date was given.

Nice job GameSpot...the kid's name isn't Charlie, Balrog himself confirmed that. Thanks for spreading false information!

I'm wondering if the blue ice type (magic) glowing through his axe and the boys arrow explosion as it hits the troll is Hope, as in GoW3 he defeated Zeus with Hope, though Kratos ended his life and Hope left his body into the heavens... Maybe it's a Nordic ice magic? ?

The Giant is probably one of the firegiants from Muspelheim (fireworld in the south). He could even be the giant Surt who wants to conquer Niflheim (Iceworld in the north).

i always did love God of War games including this one. no doubt i am pre-ordering this bad boy. will it have button presses. the only thing that i didn't like about the games is that sometimes you had to rapidly press circle or L1 and R1 so you didn't get squished.. like in the first God of War at the beginning where you have fight a statue and you had to rapidly press circle in order not to get stepped on. i apologize for what i say in this because i love the God of War games. i just do not like the rapidly pressing...

from the trailer i saw, it does look very good and i can't wait to play it but i do not like the rapidly buttons presses. sorry.. what i mean is that i like buttons presses but those rapidly presses are hard...

once again... i am sorry...

I never played god of war with Kratos because I find it a sci-fi manipulation of real stories and myths.. lol

Kratos is one of the sons of one of the most powerful and ancient goddesses in the universe. Much more ancient than Perseus and Medussa era. It is said the spyral of the whole cosmos that all universes are inside it, its like waters and its the waters of immortality. These waters are ultradimensional and all gods fear Stigos, because she controls these waters. These waters can give you eternal death or eternal life. Gods used it as a punishment to other gods as well...

Seeing Kratos against gods and getting like an old man and dragons fly by him, looks so reptilian fantasy/sci-fi thing, a dragonian fantasy thing... Stigos and her family are Zeus allies and there is no way any little dragon to dare fly by them... Powerful gods and little weak dragons, dont fit. These Gods always had dead reptiles for their hobby...

So I dont like what I see.

I am surprised that they kept Kratos. It's a reboot into Norse Mythology with different plot and gameplay. It's a chance to use a new character. If they are drawing in people who have never played GoW, whether it's Kratos makes no difference. People who have enjoyed GoW may not like this new Kratos. Some already don't. I look forward to seeing what effect Sony Santa Monica is trying to achieve.

Why they turn GOW into a copy-paste of The Witcher and games alike? why they think we fans of GOW´s hack&slash will be excited for this crap? seems like a Horizon Zero Dawn featuring Kratos, Santa Monica screw it up for good this time

Is The Witcher a hack&slash game? or more like a RPG one? this GOW looks like that, if you read I say "games alike"

@KiriharaZro: You said it was a copy/paste of The Witcher, but I'm not seeing anything about that demo that looked like any of The Witcher games. It looked like a cross between God of War and Dark Souls.

@KiriharaZro: The Witcher is regular third person, not in over the shoulder. And you can gain XP in tons of games; it's not a meaningful similarity,

Sorry to burst some of your bubbles but this info by the director Cory Barlog on a youtube live -stream:

  • The gameplay is being re-imagined, but the storyline is being continued within Norse Mythology.
  • We play as Kratos for the whole game.
  • The game is set “many years after God of War 3
  • It’s a much more intimate and player-controlled experience.
  • The accessibility should be the same as previous game, but the gameplay is totally different.
  • It’s a big game, but it’s not an open world.
  • “More to come” on more characters that will be included in the game.
  • The game will be released “soon,” not this year.
  • Quicktime Events won’t be included in the same way they were in the previous games.

@KiriharaZro: Well I mean he still has some Godly powers so he probably ages slower than humans. So yeah many years for him could be a millennia...give or take a century or two.

Although I liked what I saw I'm also worried it is not the "God of war" I want. I want the fast and furious combat against multiple enemies and epic settings and humungus and cool bosses. This looked more like a open world rpg with slow combat and set pieces. I won't diss it now before I see more but... I'm worried.

@lucariomew: Well because the combat shown was slow... so that kind of means it won't be both. And it is confirmed not be open world but still. I'm sure it's cool but I like the old style of gameplay.
I'm most likely still going to buy it.

imho looks pretty cool so far. I'm not really up to date on GoW, so is it that:

since he's the GoW he can just materialize whenever there's a war and favor a side, this time in Norse mythology (instead of Greek)?

God of What?

War? What War? Where's the over the top action, where's the high octatne Hack and Slash Gameplay, where are the larger than life bosses?

This is NOT God of War, it may wear the skin of Kratos but it's more of a Last of Us wannabe than a true next gen followup.

Now I'm really hoping PlatinumGames will make Bayonetta 3 because I can't think of anyone else that can do Hack 'n Slash justice.

Looks absolutely incredible. Definitely a day 1 purchase / pre-order for me. Never been disappointed by a GOW game yet and I don't see any reason this one will disappoint. The graphics are absolutely stunning and the combat looks very, very fluid. Totally looking forward to playing this!!! I just hope there's no crappy, uncalled for MP component tacked on and I also hope the kid isn't around for the entire story. Kids in dramatic stories typically = baggage......

If this is Kratos somehow losing all his powers yet again and working his way back up, I won't go anywhere near it. Hopefully it's about the kid growing up and becoming the new God of War, with Norse mythology and all new weapons, enemies and characters. I refuse to play the same GoW template again.

@youre_a_sheep: Is it really all that different if you're gaining new powers as Kratos because he lost them or gaining new powers as a kid because he never had them? I'm guess that this is Kratos like Link is always Link, and this isn't part of the same history where he was a massive, unlikeable ***hole in ancient Greece, but an alternate story about him.

@Mogan: If you watch the gameplay footage closely you see that his moveset has greek names. Like in the troll fight, you got a notification to use the move (a quick time event) Spartan rage.

This doesn't necessarily have to be a different Kratos. Did everyone forget that the end of God of War 3 alluded to the possibility of Kratos being alive? Who's to say that with the ancient Greek Gods destroyed and the world set ablaze, a new set of Gods couldn't have arisen from the void to fill the power vacuum? Heck these Gods could've even been here this whole time but unable to do anything because of Greek sovereignty. So maybe this takes place years later, with an aged Kratos who traveled the world and settled with a Nordic tribe.
