GOG.com courting indie developers

Independent game developers offered perks to promote submissions on GOG.com website.

Digital games retailer GOG.com is encouraging submissions from independent game developers on its website.

No Caption Provided

Games that are accepted will be sold on GOG.com (GOG), a platform that distributes games free of any form of digital rights management (DRM). Developers are also offered the opportunity to opt in for an advance on royalties from game sales made.

GOG is providing new releases free promotion on the site's front page and via its social media channels as part of a marketing campaign. Additionally, developers are able to gain feedback on their game from GOG, regardless of whether the submission is accepted or declined.

Several independent game developers currently utilise GOG's platform. Developers of games such as To the Moon, Defender's Quest, and Driftmoon appear on the video supporting the site's approach.

GOG is a PC game retailer and distribution service owned by CD Projekt Red. The platform has been advocating its DRM-free stance since 2011.

I love GOG. They made it possible to play many of my old favourites that (for one reason or another) just would not run in my main PC anymore (from my original discs).

GoG and CD Projekt Red - my two favorite things are actually one thing... or like a siamese twin where one body handles GoG and the does game development. Either way, I like them both and this is a really good thing, sounds much better than Steam's Greenlight procedure.

I'm a fan of Gog.com's DRM stance, so I hope that more developers start using their service.

Someone please tell WayForward this, I'm tired of Shantae:Risky's Revenge being in Steam Greenlight purgatory.

Is this article an advertisement paid for by GOG?

@bouchart I'd be a tiny bit surprised as far as Gamespot facilitating it. CDPR on the other hand, maybe you were around when they admitted taking their site down without notice once was a shameless way to draw attention to their revamped site. well if they weren't kidding at least.

Most indie games on PC have a DRM free version by default anyway (Monaco does, don't stave does, numerous kickstarter games also do). I assumed these titles were already available on GOG but I guess not. I hope this promo goes well because indies + GOG seems a good combination to me.

I have to say, i didn't know CD projekt red started/ran GOG. Consider me schooled in that regard :p

@AshTrai CD Projekt is a whole group of companies: CD Projekt RED (developers), GOG.com (digital games store), CDP.pl (digital store, but also distributor of movies and retail video/board/card games, Polish market only).

I know DRM is a dirty word around these parts but if its done well it's great. I mean Steam is DRM and what it gives us is a great unified service. I love having things like trading cards, achievements and unified friends lists for my PC games. It basically gives you the best of PC and consoles at the same time.
So that's why I don't bother buying my games on GOG

But why would you buy an OLD game on Steam? Like why buy Deus Ex on Steam when you can get it on GOG? There are no achievements or trading cards, so it's not like that stuff even matters. And you can still launch it from Steam. Just add the shortcut. I'd rather have a DRM free copy that I can back up on a DVD and can take with me and play anywhere. Also, you can download it as many times as you want from their website. With new games, I get your point. But I see no reason to get all of your games on Steam.

@Lost-to-Apathy Often old games still get steam achievements and sometimes even trading cards or cloud saves.

@Lost-to-Apathy also GOG offers games that steam doesn't, like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and countless other "Good Old Games".

Indy is more or less a recent development for GOG. Its not their main focus. Their main focus is too get games which are hard to find let alone getting them to run on your pc, into the customers hands with ease.

There's no such site called Good Old Games. GOG used to stand for that, but they dumped the full name a couple of years ago, and are now just called GOG...

I have a GOG account but I don't think I have bought a single thing there as I found it cheaper elsewhere and on top of that most of the games there totally suck. If they add Indie games and give me crazy prices once in awhile like Green Man Gaming, Steam and other sites do then maybe I will give them some of my money. Until then GOG hardly matters.

@DeViLzzz I have to admit the prices usually aren't great. The classic games are too expensive in my opinion, even on sale. If they would run sales where they bundle a bunch of classic games for like $20 I'd buy more. I guess the prices are high since without DRM they get pirated so easily.

@DeViLzzz GOG has sales all the damn time, like there was just all the D&D-games on sale. Sure, they mostly focus on old games or indie, so obviously their collection won't be anything like Steam or GMG, but if you're not looking for oldies or indies then why would go to GOG in the first place?

@Dictatroll @enartloc He clearly meant mecha, but misspelt it. No way does he mean the city concidered sacred to muslims, he must mean robots instead.

@Dictatroll It is the holiest place as far as the Muslim religion is concerned so people of the Muslim faith take a pilgrimage there all the time. So yeah you have the right idea.

@enartloc Their support system is great too, as is the community. They are totally what the industry needs at the moment. A service like GOG has been LONG overdue.
