GOG.com courting indie developers

Independent game developers offered perks to promote submissions on GOG.com website.

Digital games retailer GOG.com is encouraging submissions from independent game developers on its website.

No Caption Provided

Games that are accepted will be sold on GOG.com (GOG), a platform that distributes games free of any form of digital rights management (DRM). Developers are also offered the opportunity to opt in for an advance on royalties from game sales made.

GOG is providing new releases free promotion on the site's front page and via its social media channels as part of a marketing campaign. Additionally, developers are able to gain feedback on their game from GOG, regardless of whether the submission is accepted or declined.

Several independent game developers currently utilise GOG's platform. Developers of games such as To the Moon, Defender's Quest, and Driftmoon appear on the video supporting the site's approach.

GOG is a PC game retailer and distribution service owned by CD Projekt Red. The platform has been advocating its DRM-free stance since 2011.

Good Old Games: both the bane and savior of indie titles.

The website alone will keep piracy around for forever!

@experience_fade @numbes Getting rid of GOG altogether is not going to save any developer shutting down due to lost profits. Their bad game will sink them at launch months if not years before it's on GOG. The alternative is they can squeeze at least a little something from a distributor that has a happy customer base behind them. And honestly all developers are counting on piracy anyway, a project does not go anywhere before making allowances for that because it isn't going to go away with or without GOG.

@experience_fade You're just seeing one small point of the whole picture though, lots of companies these days treat PC gamers like criminals (and the rest like dirt, money-making dirt)

GOG actually shows love to gamer community, by selling games DRM free (which for many people is a serious plus) along with tons of extra free goodies.

In a nutshell, they show a rare kind of respect towards gamers and in return gamers show respect towards them, meaning that yes, although there stuff is out there being pirated on torrent sites, lots of people will actually consider buying it instead. Heck I know lots of people who only pirate that even support GOG.

@numbes I'm not suggesting games are cracked "easily" -- at least not without GoG's help.

That's likely why they have to "court" indie developers, because a DRM free copy of any title means more piracy.

There is still a game-by-game learning curve for piracy, for the most part. Many people find it too complicated, believe me.

GoG removes this complication, as I said. With GoG versions of games, it's as simple as installing the title, and that's it. Done deal.

@experience_fade @Gamesfetch @RC-Sev not many are for drm you even admit it will be cracked so how do you defend developers spending she loads of cash developing it rather than games when it will be cracked very quickly anyway

@Gamesfetch @RC-Sev @experience_fade Given that the game isn't out yet, and will be on a new, next gen console, I'd wager it won't be pirated for at least six months, give or take.

But make no mistake, there isn't one game on a 360 or PS3 that can't be pirated.

@RC-Sev @experience_fade GoG makes it infinitely easier, is my point, my fellow, three replying users.

Once the GoG version of a game is uploaded, boom: that version becomes pirated, and it's quite easy.

Understand that, half of the reason piracy isn't more rampant than it already is is because of the difficulty and complicated process of successfully completing it.

GoG removes that difficulty altogether. Yadig?

@experience_fade @RC-Sev you are so hilarious man,you know how long a game stays uncracked on average?8 hours, that's it.You know what the crackers did when CDPR released both a drm and free drm versions of Witcher 2?They cracked the one that had protection, just for the lulz.Piracy is difficult? Then why are 99% of games pirated on the day they launch?

@experience_fade there's not a single game on GOG that ever had a DRM version that is not cracked on piratebay,so no,it will not keep piracy forever.

@experience_fade People go that site to BUY games - if you are insinuating pirating a 30 year old game was hard before GOG.com, you are mistaken.
