Halo 4 nearing completion

343 Industries entering "super crunch time," says campaign playable from start to finish, Spartan Ops missions and multiplayer maps now being polished and bug-tested.

More than four months separates today from Halo 4's November launch date, but it appears Microsoft is nearing completion on the new shooter. According to the latest Halo Bulletin report, developer 343 Industries is entering "super crunch time" on the project, now focusing on bug-smashing and polish.

A first look at Halo 4's Longbow multiplayer map.
A first look at Halo 4's Longbow multiplayer map.

According to Microsoft, the Halo 4 campaign is playable from start to finish, with some levels approaching "near-complete" status, while others remain in need of polish and bug eradication. Additionally, Microsoft said the first wave of Spartan Ops mode missions find themselves in a similar state, as is the case with the 10 multiplayer maps that will ship with Halo 4.

Not only is Halo 4 nearing completion, but the new live-action series Forward Unto Dawn is wrapping up. Microsoft said the cast and crew for the series recently finished their last day of shooting in Vancouver and are now entering the final stage of production. Forward Unto Dawn launches in October, and more information on the series will be shared at Comic-Con 2012 next month, Microsoft said.

Also in this week's Halo Bulletin, Microsoft shared news on Halo 4's newest revealed multiplayer map, Longbow (pictured). The company explained that it has a long history of snow-themed maps, specifically calling out Snowbound and Avalanche from Halo 3, and that this theme will continue with Longbow in Halo 4. This map will showcase one of Halo 4's unannounced game modes and saw a number of revisions before Microsoft decided on its final setup.

Longbow is a mid- to long-range map that supports vehicles like Warthogs, Mongooses, and Ghosts in its current form, and sports a number of close-range combat opportunities around base structures. For more on the map, check out the full, detailed blog post.

Halo 4 is due out on November 6 for the Xbox 360. It is a direct sequel to 2007's Halo 3 and has players taking on the role of supersoldier Master Chief. For more on the project, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

@MajahretDiviera Lol Reach showed more promise? It was by far the worst HALO game released as soon as bungie released they left to activision and left the game the way it was.

@TheTHCGamer i was mainly referring to, the development process leading up to its release which made it seem promising, but inevitably as you stated, Bungie's departure sealed its fate, so hence why i didnt bother buying it.

@MajahretDiviera haha what, both of you have no idea what you are talking about. I would like both of you to explain to me how Halo: Reach was bad. PS Bungie had announced that Reach would be their last Halo game before they even announced Reach. If you're one of the people who are complaining about the battle-rife, grow up. Bungie only left to Activision because of Microsoft trying to screw them over.

@DIGN "the fact that all the maps were direct rips from the campaign"

That's not quite accurate. The maps were created first for multiplayer, and then inserted into campaign levels. For example, Reflection, which is a remake of the Halo 2 map Ivory Tower, but is also a section of the New Alexandria level.

@MajahretDiviera Yeah I agree with you, but from what I've heard Bungie has been trying to expand to more platforms and Microsoft was restricting them, so they dropped it and I assume Activision gave them an offer that they couldn't refuse, but you never know Bungie might be that one light in the dark and still make good games.

I completely agree with you, CoD was destroyed by Activision, so I am also a little afraid of what might happen to Bungie, but I trust Bungie to do the right thing they probably wouldn't have agreed to the deal if they didn't have a plan of some sort.

And Reach-ways, there were only a few bad things, the fact that all the maps were direct rips from the campaign, they planned DLC maps pre-launch and sold them shortly after release. I think it's a full improvement from the other Halos, Halo 2 was my favorite(it felt 100% complete to me.) The Sprint mechanic adds a whole new dimension to the game. I didn't see many things wrong with it, most of the rants I heard were about the DMR replacing the BR and somehow it became broken because of that.

@Spartan_418 ahh, thanks for being one of the few to admit that. I agree with some of those, Armor Lock was an unbalanced ability considering all the exploits people found on it. I only used sprint so I wouldn't know much about the other ones, I like reache because sprint added a whole new dimension to the game and room for more strategy.

I too didn't like the fact that they removed the skill based MP Ranking, but they did implement something similar in the ARENA playlist.

ODST was the worst in my opinion.

@DIGN ill comment on your last point first. Activision will screw them over any way they can, since that seems to be the trending thing for them to do to the studios that rake in the money. im not one who cares for COD, but it was a shitty thing they did to the devs at infinity ward. not saying MS is any better, but that's like going from one evil to an even worst evil.

anywho, no didnt care much for the rifle or had any issues with it. things did seem promising for the game while it was still in development, but when the final product came about, i just didnt think that they improved enough things to warrant my purchase. that was all there was to it. sure they added new things, modified other things, but none of that was enough for me to bother with it, especially for how much of burn 3 was. 2 was still ok, but no where near as complete and great as 1. and ODST was just a joke to me. again these are all my personal opinions and reasons for not bothering to get those games. much like i can accept those who liked the game, i would expect the same them to accept my not liking them.

@DIGN

The main reasons people didn't like Reach were:

-reticule bloom, which added an element of randomness to gunfights, and made skill less important

-pretty much all of the Armor Abilities. People thought they were all unbalanced in one way or another, and "ruined" Halo's gameplay.

-lack of a skill-based ranking system

-small number of original maps, lots of remakes and Forge World maps

I don't actually agree with any of this, mind you. While bloom perhaps wasn't a great idea, I liked Armor Abilities and thought they added a layer of depth to the gameplay. None of the changes actually made it a "bad game" to the extent that the haters want you to believe.

i was really disappointed with how halo 3 turned out, which made me not bother with ODST and Reach(though reach did show more of a promise). but a fresh start with a new studio who has been doing a great job thus far with the franchise is what i needed, in order to get back in the game and purchase another Halo game, and well for that matter another game for my 360 which has not been used in about 2.5 years, but come November it will be getting dusted off and be played. I tried stepping away from the series, after Bungie left, but... *sigh*

Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in.

@brylynt

I'm on my 4th Xbox 360, none of my previous Xbox's broke! I still have 3 of them in my house right now. Xbox 360 Original 20gb, Xbox 360 MW2 Edition 120gb and Xbox 360 Slim. I've also owned the Xbox 360 Resident Evil 120gb edition, but sold that one to buy the MW2 version.

Anyway, I'm guessing you had some really bad luck with your Xbox 360's. I've never had a problem with mine.

I also have over 60 xbox 360 games.

I'm a fan. :)

My Wife's pretty awesome, thank you!

Try getting your Wife hooked on games like Animal Crossing for the Wii and go from there. :) My Wife and I play all kinds of games together, Gears of War, Halo (all of them), several RPG's, she's also big into Skyrim. We even play Dead Island co-op on the PC and tons of Minecraft. :)

Oh, she's also a big fan of Assassin's Creed.

@Landsharkk I've tried but with nor real success. I managed to play Rockband with her because she likes to sing but other than that... nope! She gets dizzy just watching FPS and she hates repetitive noises. She's really not a gamer. To bad... otherwise she would be the perfect woman :) (Just joking honey!)

@Mrod1212 I'm with Mrod on this, Halo is my favorite multiplayer FPS but the stories were nothing to brag about and Bungie has never been able to storyboard them well either -- too many awkward transitions that would be a no-no in filmmaking. But then again until the audience expect higher standards, sh*t like that is passable in the video game industry.

Why would you lose faith after the first one? The others just kept improving on what was awesome about the first one, odd little man.

New map looks cool. I figured around this time the game would be done and they would be working on bug fixes. I was correct.!

Halo 4 should be an excellent swan song for Xbox 360. I have enjoyed the Halo series. I have every game. So this is a November day 1 purchase for me. Yes this series is overated. But I don't mind so much. A fun First person shooter. Which is the whole point of a videogame.

@ShadowOfKratos Halo 2 was released on PC. The 360 ones probably won't be, at least not until the next Xbox has launched and 360 sales have slowed down. The Halo movie never got made because of disputes over profit sharing between MS, Fox and Universal.

You're right, I'm not. It's hard to when it's the only exclusive worth following on the 360 (GoW or Forza aren't my taste), especially when one doesn't have the console. No offense though, just my opinion. ;)

@ShadowOfKratos Halo 2 was also released on PC. My guess is that MS wants Halo to be its system mover for Xbox 360, and thinks PC versions might detract from that.

If Halo 3, ODST, Reach and 4 are ever released on PC, my guess is it'll be sometime after the next Xbox launches, when 360 sales have slowed down.
