Here's What Overwatch's Director Thinks About Mouse-And-Keyboard Controls On Console

"The Overwatch team objects to the use of mouse-and-keyboard on console," Jeff Kaplan says.

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has spoken out about mouse-and-keyboard controls on console for the popular shooter.

In a forum post (via Polygon), Kaplan said, "The Overwatch team objects to the use of mouse-and-keyboard on console." He went on to say that Blizzard has reached out to Sony and Microsoft to express its "concern" about this, as well as input conversion devices. Kaplan said Blizzard wants Sony and Microsoft to either prohibit the use of mouse-and-keyboard controls and conversion devices or officially add support for those control setups for everyone. He also called on gamers to share their thoughts with the platform-holders "in a productive and respectful way."

No Caption Provided

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One do not officially support mouse-and-keyboard controls, though people have found ways, including converters, to make that setup work. Regarding a full, officially supported mouse-and-keyboard setup for Xbox One, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently said he hopes this will happen in part to help RTS games grow in prominence on console.

Mouse-and-keyboard is considered a superior control setup for precision aiming, among other things. No game is ever perfectly balanced, but console players using a mouse-and-keyboard setup would surely have an advantage over those using a controller.

Before Overwatch came out last year, Blizzard explained that there is no cross-play between PC and console in part because PC players would have an advantage with mouse-and-keyboard controls.

In other Overwatch news, Blizzard recently announced that the game has crossed 25 million registered users. We may learn more about how the game is performing from a business perspective this week when Activision Blizzard reports earnings on February 9.

When I play a console game (I own a console and a PC), I want to kick back on a couch/on my bed with a controller. I don't want the competitive aspect to be ruined because some little try-hard wants to get an "edge" over the competition by using a keyboard and mouse.

I understand there are people that want the plug and play nature of a console but don't like using a controller. The thing is, they have the choice to play on another platform where KB+M are supported. If consoles adopt support for KB+M, it takes away the choice for anyone that wants to play competitively with a controller.

Yes, before someone says it, I'm sure you're amazing with a controller and can pwn KB+M players all day long. The point is, overall mouse and keyboard is a more precise input device for the vast majority of people, so mixing it up isn't fair on the vast majority of people that play using a controller.

If you're someone that plays on consoles and just can't get the hang of these dang tricky controllers, at the end of the day that is your problem. Get better or save up for a PC. Using a KB+M emulation device on console is basically cheating and odds are you wouldn't fare so well on a platform where everyone else is using a KB+M.

PS4 doesn't support keyboard and mouse controls without adapters? News to me, since I've been playing Final Fantasy 14 on PS4 with a usb keyboard and mouse from day one without any issue. Seems to me the support is there, just the developers need to use it.

@EightBitNinja83: It's just another badly researched article from Eddie, nothing new here other than that the Xbone doesn't support those devices. Really? How can this be a thing on a Windows console?

@Atzenkiller: it's not really as in demand on xb1 as ps4. I would also go with mouse and keyboard if my only option was a dualshock 4.

@H0RSE: I wreck pc players all the time with an elite controller. A good player can overcome a keyboard and mouse and can become more agile in games like gears of war. I can use a keyboard and mouse like a pro,but it's much more challenging with a controller.

@neoistheone: GOW 4 has a max turning speed, aimassist and other speed and movement restrictions so matching k&m on that game isn't that impressive, so yeah I trust you do well with a controller on that game. Try a fps without restrictions, especially a fast game where you can turn on a dime. You'd have to suck balls with m&k to not have an advantage over controllers in such games.

But even if you would "wreck pc gamers" all the time, you'd be th 0.1%, for the vast majority it would be a bad experience with a controller vs m&k. That is why all these devs never do crossplay in games that do give m&k such an advantage and speak up against it. Because it is a proven fact.

"console players using a mouse-and-keyboard setup would surely have an advantage over those using a controller."

Not true. Back when some games went cross platform like Shadowrun, the console gamers with controllers did just fine against the PC's M&K.

All the mouse does is give better aiming at a fixed point. If you have to do a quick 180...you're screwed. You have to swipe your mouse across the pad like you're ironing a shirt in a hurry. Plus, after just a couple of hours your hands start to hurt using a keyboard. (Carpal Tunnal Syndrome).

The only thing consoles gamers want from a M&K is to play RTS's and MMO's more effectively for the HotKeys. Dont get it confused.

@lithus:

Shadowrun was "balanced" in favor of controller players when the game came out. There were several articles on it. The game was tweaked to either give m/kb a handicap or to give controllers an advantage. It wasn't just raw talent m/kb vs controllers.

As for your "quick 180," if you can't do this with your mouse, you're doing it wrong.. I can do a 180 moving like an inch in either direction, and I'm a low sensitivity player...

Play at a higher DPI setting and quick 180° turns are extremely simple, also if your wrists and more or less horizontal, your wrists will be fine. I have adjustable arm wrests on my desk chair that allow this.

People playing (fighting games) with fighting sticks have an advantage too. That shouldn't be a problem.

If you really want to play at the very edge you'll fork the money for a ps4/xbox mouse+keyb setup. If you don't, matchmaking will do its job and eventually you'll be matched with equally skilled players.

Interesting food for thought, there is already an officially licensed by Sony mouse and keyboard setup that works with all games right out of the box. The fact that Sony licensed this product clearly shows their stance on the issue. What are your thoughts?

Horsesh1t, Kaplan. You just don't want to PAY to add it to your games.

Like any custom peripheral device, it should be permitted and supportable on a title-by-title basis. If you don't want to add it to exiting games, then simply don't. (...and potentially suffer your fans' wrath when they go play something else that does.)

Sony & MS should officially support it. There's a market for it and the consoles aren't just video game devices anymore. I also would love more cross platform play. I know people on PC who don't use M&KB. You will get less accuracy with a controller, but you will also get less accuracy with a cheap mouse and/or tiny mouse pad.

This is something that has never mattered IMO. The people who care about getting the highest accuracy will practice the most and spend more money to help them be as accurate as possible anyways. If you don't care as much, do what you wanna do. It's just a game. If it's more important to you, you'll treat it that way and take advantage of whatever helps you become a better player.

No reason to complain about what others do. We're talking about competitive games, so be as competitive as possible or just have fun and don't worry about it. Don't expect other people to be less competitive so the game is easier for you.

@PS2fweak: You can't "have fun and not worry about it" if you're at a considerabledisadvantage compared to other players. You have a choice, play competitive on PC with M&K or play competitive on console with a controller, that's it. There's absolutely NO need to mix things up. Sure, they can make like a "dualshock m&k" and make it supported by strategy games or other isometric ones in general (like Divinity OS, Wasteland or Tides of Numenera), but don't even think bringing it into competitive.

Played Discworld 1+2 and Xcom1+2 on the PS back then with a mouse...it was more comfortable.

I have no probs with M&K on consoles for singleplayer modes but multiplayer has to be regulated...pad vs pad,mk vs mk

@sladakrobot:
they could just setup different servers that support each method:

pad v pad
m/kb vs m/kb
mixed

this way if they choose to play on a mixed server, it's on them, not the game.

Nah you gotta keep consoles controller only. As soon as you allow mouse you give people willing to use it a huge advantage and condemn anyone sat on the sofa in a more relaxed position with a controller. Is either better? Well you could argue a controller is more realistic considering on a mouse I can do a 180 in 1/10th of a second, unlike real life... Ultimately I think either are fine and both are a learned skill, but they really shouldn't be mixed as they change the way you play the game. Mouse is always going to be vastly superior with 2 players of equal skill. There's also a lovely PC version of the game, you want mouse, go play it. And you'll get 150fps+ and 1440p on a midrange PC which feels sublime. A console would need a rock solid 60fps to be smooth with mouse and still feel a bit laggy, just not worth it. I love my consoles and my PC for different reasons, I don't need them mixed or crossed over.

@mattcake: Well it's already mixed on PC and there's no problem. I have friends playing from 30-240fps, all types of different M&K setups and sensitivities, some use controllers, some use speakers or headphones. We act like it's one thing for PC, but it varies so much and it's proof there's no problem. What you use is based on what you have, what you want, and/or what you think is necessary. You can have fun with whatever. Limiting console gamers should be a thing of the past.

@PS2fweak: Consoles are a level playing field, it's the main reason to play multiplayer on them. It shouldn't be taken away. If someone is having fun using a controller on the PC version then good for them (I use controller on PC for lots of games too) but they honestly won't have a hope in hell against even an average mouse user, but it's their choice. That's why no one cares what people use on PC, because it's inferior to the mouse (which the majority will use).

However, the majority of console users are on controller. If they start getting beat by a mouse user, there will be a massive reaction. You can't expect everyone on console to go out and buy a mouse to get a level playing field, and setup a desk and a keyboard etc. and sit upright and close to the TV etc. A mouse user in a game of controller players will have a HUGE advantage, something MS and Sony wouldn't like (or anyone else) as it makes the game unfair for most of the players.

Like I said, I like both control systems, but one is clearly superior to the other (when it comes to FPS anyway). They'll never mix fairly, and that's just fine imo.

I would like to see M&K on consoles, but only on games for which they were intended; surely the software could detect and enforce this.

There's lots of PC-only games (e.g. wargames) that I would like to play on console that seem to be PC only, possibly because of console controller limitations. I wouldn't want to play against M&K users in a shooter when I was using a controller.

Hilarious! It's not like they can stop Mouse and Keyboard on console anyways.

And the even more hilarious thing is that PS4 does support KB/M right out of the box.

The reason why there's no cross-play between PS4 and PC is because Blizzard can't control PS4 users. Cheat? Aimbot? Auto Head Shot? Modded consoles? PS4 users can get away with it. On PC, you have to connect to Blizzard servers.

I'm okay with M/KB on consoles, but I think it would be good if the player who chooses to use a controller could select that he/she only wants to play against controller players. Each game would have to support it, but at least it would be fair.

Matchmaking will take care of this naturally. If you're good on a controller (read: below average player overall) you'll be matched with other people who are good with controllers in addition to crappy players using mouse and keyboard.

I'd say let them. Just having a keyboard and mouse won't do you much good if you're not familiar with them. They're drastically different from controllers. Controllers are simpler than keyboards, thus you have familiarity. A keyboard has so many keys that if you were to misplace your hand or something, it could throw you off for a bit.

This is kind of interesting, if MS and Sony goes threw with Mouse & Keyboard on Consoles for FPS and RTS games. Then i personally believe that cross-platform gaming is gonna be bigger between the PC and Consoles in the future :-)

What I don't get is competitive multi-players are going to find a way to use what ever helps them 'win' no matter what the game or console makers do. So why penalize your average player who just might like to see a few more games on consoles that need mouse/kb?

@sellingthings: Hardware, maybe. Control quality should never, ever, EVER be restricted by hardware.

Besides, you'll never achieve a perfect environment in online multiplayer because lag is different per person no matter the hardware.
