Here's What Overwatch's Director Thinks About Mouse-And-Keyboard Controls On Console

"The Overwatch team objects to the use of mouse-and-keyboard on console," Jeff Kaplan says.

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has spoken out about mouse-and-keyboard controls on console for the popular shooter.

In a forum post (via Polygon), Kaplan said, "The Overwatch team objects to the use of mouse-and-keyboard on console." He went on to say that Blizzard has reached out to Sony and Microsoft to express its "concern" about this, as well as input conversion devices. Kaplan said Blizzard wants Sony and Microsoft to either prohibit the use of mouse-and-keyboard controls and conversion devices or officially add support for those control setups for everyone. He also called on gamers to share their thoughts with the platform-holders "in a productive and respectful way."

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One do not officially support mouse-and-keyboard controls, though people have found ways, including converters, to make that setup work. Regarding a full, officially supported mouse-and-keyboard setup for Xbox One, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently said he hopes this will happen in part to help RTS games grow in prominence on console.

Mouse-and-keyboard is considered a superior control setup for precision aiming, among other things. No game is ever perfectly balanced, but console players using a mouse-and-keyboard setup would surely have an advantage over those using a controller.

Before Overwatch came out last year, Blizzard explained that there is no cross-play between PC and console in part because PC players would have an advantage with mouse-and-keyboard controls.

In other Overwatch news, Blizzard recently announced that the game has crossed 25 million registered users. We may learn more about how the game is performing from a business perspective this week when Activision Blizzard reports earnings on February 9.

Call for m&k support on console is long overdue.

Playing fps with a controller is so awkward in comparison.

@Richardthe3rd: Then you can just aswell play on PC idiot... Consoles are currently the only platform that offer controller only multiplayer FPS gaming. You can't do that on PC, if you don't want to be decimated by the other 99.999% of players that play with M&K. The vast majority console players don't want to sit in a fixed position in a chair behind a desk. The reason they bought a console for in the first place is that ALL games can be played relaxed from the couch with a controller.

@Berserk8989: LOL I love hearing the "Gowrsh, I want to be comfortable on my couch while I play, hyuk!" excuse for the 15 billionth time!

Relatedly, I showed up to a pick-up basketball game the other day wearing my bathrobe and slippers, because I think it's completely comfortable, but no one wanted me on their team! I did have trouble getting the range of motion I normally do in a jersey and everyone kept tripping on my belt, but it was...

So.

Damn.

Comfortable!

Seriously, I could give 2 shits about dumbasses who want to play "comfortably on their couch" in a competitive online game, even just casually. A gimped control scheme should never be required so you can destroy your lumbar on your la-z- boy.

Go play fucking skyrim if that's what you want to do and stop holding everyone else back in games like this. I use my controller plenty on games on PC where the control scheme calls for it. They don't belong in these games and they're only here because sony and M$ are band-aiding the experience because they don't want to actually fix it.

@sellingthings: they can, and they should.

The technology is literally there. They're may scared they'll lose their captive audience that pays for online subscriptions and $70 peripheralS in multiples.

See Plato's cave allegory.

They just don't want PC players that have consoles running from their precious battle.net if they can get the mouse and keyboard experience on ps4/xbone. Not everybody likes battle.net

Aside from fps rts and tower defence games I personally prefer to use controller.

@biggamerdude: I have always preferred mouse and keyboard as it provides a level of precision that is hard to get with a controller (especially on shooters). If you have a PC and want to try your hand at mouse and keyboard control, grab a free FPS from http://www.xonotic.org.

The game scales well - runs on my gaming machine and my i5 ultrabook with on-board graphics.

I don't play Overwatch, but every FPS I play on console I play with M&K. Mostly Destiny. Controllers are a no go for me. Google Xim4 if you are interested.

@Klevmore: Why aren't you just playing on PC then? Well, at least the other games, since Destiny isn't on it. You're contributing to an unfair multiplayer experience on consoles and are basically cheating by using an adapter (if you don't have any specific disabilities that is).

Absolutely not. M&k should be banned from consoles. If you want to play with more input devices, choose PC, simple.

On console you can actually play multiplayer games that rely on precision comfortably from your couch with a controller, on PC you're basically forced to sit in a chair behind a desk like everybody else and play with M&K if you don't want to be at a heavy disadvantage using a controller.

@Berserk8989: For single player games why does it matter?

Sure I understand your concern with competitive multiplayer. Not with singleplayer games.

What about RTS games on consoles... Ever tried those using a controller? It s a mess.

@Lach0121: Well, maybe if they could make like a "Dualshock mouse and keyboard" (speaking for Sony here) and then restrict it only for singleplayer strategies or other isometric games (like Divinity OS and Tides of Numenera) in general would be fine i guess.

@Thanatos2k: Coffee tables? Coffee tables normally don't have nearly enough height, playing like this in a fixed sitting position (which a m&k requires) would make you look like the hunchback of notre dame in no time.

There's nothing simpler than grabbing a controller, turn the console on with it and then perform a glorious couch dive and play comfortably in any position you want.

Hell yeah, that looks so damn comfortable... Said noone ever. Your movement is restricted, you have to sit still in the same position the whole time, you have to set it up every fucking time you play + it's pricey. With a controller, you have everything in the palm of your hands and your body is free.

With M&K support enabled, you can kiss casual competitive play with a controller goodbye.

@CyberEarth: No it's not. The antonym for casual is hardcore, not competitive. Every game in which you play against other people is competitive, but it can be either casual or hardcore competitive, that's how i understand it at least.

@DARREN636: That's why BLizzard is calling for official support from MS and Sony instead of a hack. Another option would be to give gamepad gamers the option to only opt into games that have no keyboard and mouse setup to play on a level playing field. A similar issue will happen with people playing on vr helmets. That offers a really precise aiming control scheme, look and shoot, so, addressing this now, without banning players is the only option in my opinion.

@consolehaven: No, Blizzard is wanting Sony/MS to do their jobs for them. Blizzard wants to capture console gamers, but has no actual control over what goes on. Same thing happened in Diablo 3. Hacked items? Duplicates? Massive stats? Ehhhh... can still play on console! LOL.

@DARREN636: well that's kind of unfair in competitive shooters because M&K have the edge. I don't know about banning the thing, would it be even possible? I'm sure someone would come up with a controller mod that you can solder on or something and make M&K work...

@Thanatos2k: Interesting analogy, and I see your point.

However, with shooting games, the difference between KB/M and controller is more pronounced than between a normal control pad and a professional arcade fighting stick.
