High Voltage opens The Conduit

Leisure Suit Larry: Magnum Cum Laude studio readying Wii-exclusive first-person shooter, due Q1 2009.

Headquartered in suburban Chicago, High Voltage Software is best known as the developer of the 2004 revival Leisure Suit Larry: Magnum Cum Laude, the 2006 Family Guy game, and this year's Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. Today, the company unveiled an all-new IP for a change: The Conduit for the Nintendo Wii.

The Conduit will center on a "conspiracy-laden story" involving shady government shenanigans and "terrifying aliens." Players will portray Ford, a Secret Service agent armed with an array of futuristic weaponry and aided by a Sauron-esque intelligence-gathering device simply called the "All-Seeing Eye."

Though The Conduit's story sounds reminiscent of Deus Ex and The X-Files, High Voltage is hoping its technology will be truly groundbreaking. Using its self-developed Quantum 3 engine, the studio is hoping to dispel the perception that Wii games are visually substandard when compared to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The Conduit is also notable for the fact that it is one of a somewhat rare breed: a Wii first-person shooter. Its developers are touting the fact that they are aiming to avoid the pitfalls that have befallen some previous first-person shooters for Nintendo's console, which is best known for its party games and host of first-party titles.

"Too many Wii owners have been told that the Wii is a casual platform with no room for serious games or top-tier graphics," High Voltage Chief Creative Officer Eric Nofsinger said in a statement. "With The Conduit, we intend to prove that theory wrong by providing gamers with the kind of title they imagined back when the platform was first announced."

The Conduit is currently slated for release during the first quarter of 2009.

I like how Eric Nofsinger talks about the gaming industry in the Wii. He sounds like a real hardcore gamer.

It almost sounds a little bit like a Halo for Wii. A hardcore alien shooter with lots of online? I dunno, I'm just reading.

"Too many Wii owners have been told that the Wii is a casual platform with no room for serious games or top-tier graphics, with The Conduit, we intend to prove that theory by providing gamers with the kind of title they imagined back when the title was announced." -Eric Nofsinger Now that I agree with there, many people say "Wii's to family friendly, none of the good stuff is on that platform." Well Wii does have hardcore stuff, but not as much as people want, so The Conduit is a hope to prove that wrong. So High Voltage says Wii is for hardcore as it is for families.

It looks absolutely beautiful. I mean, a more action-oriented shot is what the Wii needs, seeing as how Metriod Prime 3 was done so well, the same kind of theory needs to be applied to a game that's primarily a shooter, rather than centering on exploration or puzzle aspects of MP3. We still have the best to look forward too! (BTW, I loved MP3)

The All Seeing Eye? I saw a trailer of it and noticed that there was something similar to it- it's called The Lens of Truth from Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Same thing- being able to see objects in a room that you wouldn't normally see. High Voltage is certainly taking advantage of the Wii Speak announced yesterday at E3 for online, now The Conduit needs to not disappoint us fan boys with what they plan to offer.

Developers should be inspired simply by the installed base of Wii consoles and the resulting software sales. High Voltage is going to laugh all the way to bank.

I like that last thing he said: "With The Conduit, we intend to prove that theory wrong by providing gamers with the kind of title they imagined back when the platform was first announced." That is awesome. I'm hoping for a good game because the Wii doesn't have enough great 3rd party games. I just want more REAL gamer type games on the Wii! MORE GAMES NINTENDO!!!!!!!!!!

this game has promise and looks like something i might look into. and i'm glad that they are trying to make graphics that live up to the wii's standers and not get lazy with them. but i don't want them to focus on the graphics only but gameplay because the gameplay is most important

Oh, I'm so glad more and more developers and publishers are making new and exotic titles for the Wii....it seems like the perfect console for a shooter, but not many developers have explored the Wii's power. The trailer for it though was basically just gameplay, but it looks really good. You can find it on IGN.com. I'm keeping an eye on this one.

I heard it will play 60 frames per second, thats the rate of a 360/PS3 game. If it has those graphics and fun gameplay, it is a must buy for me. i have seen the trailer on IGN and the game looks amazing.

This is very, very good. The only reason I went with the 360 this generation was the dwindling support of third parties and the more serious games that I like. While I did enjoy the underappreciated Geist and Killer7, those were titles (at least for a bit) were exclusive to the GC. The GC was seriously lacking in original content, all the ports were killing me. Besides the fact that most of the games were very tame compared to what was being released on the xbox and ps2 at the time. While I believe that has only gotten extremely worse this generation for the wii, especially with its fruity Mii's and childlike games and interface on its consoles, names for its games and consoles, and sounds they use for said games and pretty anything they publish. I do respect a good publisher for their production values, but their concept of expanding the gaming community by just focusing on the casual gamer is absurd. While the 360's arcade greatly enhances that console, its not the same for Nintendo. Its like I came up with the concept of manufacturing expensive televisions for people who do not watch tv. With the announcement with this game, it gives me a better reason to buy a wii, while I also wait for Sadness and Disaster to come out. I can also enjoy the few good games that came with the gc. I will miss the gba player that I use with it, of course, I might get over it. And while I am venting, I hope Nintendo is reading this, I hope that when they make their next console, handheld and home console, that they consider implementing large screen usuability. Meaning that like the psp, you can hook it up directly to your tv and play a game. While it will be hard to do this with the current generation ds, it could be implemented into the next one. A next generation Nin console with GBA slots would be excellant!

Im confused; when the Wii was first released RED STEEL gave people the impression that the Wii remote was bad for shooters but, I think the Wii has already proved to be a good console for shooters because, of Call of Duty 3, Metroid Prime 3 and most importantly Resident Evil 4 which people actually complained that aiming was too easy on Resident Evil 4 and, that playing it with the Wii remote voided the spirit of the game. Although it will be nice to have a shooter with online gameplay on the Wii.

Here's hoping it plays as good as it looks. If a game like this is a success, it could compel other developers to start taking the Wii a little more seriously.

Ah finally, some more news about this game. I've heard that the hype machine about it has been going so strong that publishers are knocking on high voltage's door to publish it. It has a lot of potential. Can't wait to see how it'll turn out.

Yea IGN has been on this game from the start and High Voltage is located in Hoffman Estates in the Chicago Land area. I have a couple of people that work for the company and lets just say, they had nothing but good things to say about this title. It really is going to be a hit, just not a sleeper hit I hope.

It is really nice to see that a 3rd party is FINALLY putting some real effort into the Wii , I really have high hopes for this game and it is looking good . But for some reason I am afraid that the AI will be lacking in this game . We will have to wait and see .

Jesus on a pogo stick... I hope this is good, as I agree with most previous postings; the Wii is in serious need of good 3rd-party support. And if anyone so much as suggests Mii capabilities I'm going to cry... haha.

Not really impressed by their credits, but sometimes a studio can do poorly with one genre and come up with something really great in another genre.

Sounds pretty interesting. If it is anything like Dues Ex as they mentioned, I will probably like it a lot. It doesn't sound like The Conduit has the most original story, but as long as the gameplay is great, it doesn't need a superb A+ story. Hopefully it will turn out for the better.

Good to see High Voltage is putting the effort! Kinda makes me angry how some (or most) 3rd party devs seem like they're not taking the Wii seriously, which results in a crap load of half-assed games. I just really hope I can have the refreshing, hardcore experience with The Conduit like I had when I first played Super Mario Galaxy.

Yay, another shooter. Hopefully it'll live up to the expectations that they just gave us. Otherwise sometime when I have free time, I'm going to go and start beating people up that made the Wii seem bad when it's not. And I completely agree with you Owner, if it has multiplayer, it needs to not have friend codes. On a side note: I may have said Owner but you don't own me. Don't try to be sneaky like that devil monkey was last night. It didn't turn out so well for him.

Oh I just remembered as well, I bet a lot of Wii gamers aren't playing it on a 16:9 LCD TV with a componant cable (like me). I can tell you it gives the games a sharp, clean and smooth picture. It look gorgeous. Judge it's graphics after playing it like that, not on a 4:3 standard definition TV or LCD TV with the composite cable.
