High Voltage opens The Conduit

Leisure Suit Larry: Magnum Cum Laude studio readying Wii-exclusive first-person shooter, due Q1 2009.

Headquartered in suburban Chicago, High Voltage Software is best known as the developer of the 2004 revival Leisure Suit Larry: Magnum Cum Laude, the 2006 Family Guy game, and this year's Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. Today, the company unveiled an all-new IP for a change: The Conduit for the Nintendo Wii.

The Conduit will center on a "conspiracy-laden story" involving shady government shenanigans and "terrifying aliens." Players will portray Ford, a Secret Service agent armed with an array of futuristic weaponry and aided by a Sauron-esque intelligence-gathering device simply called the "All-Seeing Eye."

Though The Conduit's story sounds reminiscent of Deus Ex and The X-Files, High Voltage is hoping its technology will be truly groundbreaking. Using its self-developed Quantum 3 engine, the studio is hoping to dispel the perception that Wii games are visually substandard when compared to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The Conduit is also notable for the fact that it is one of a somewhat rare breed: a Wii first-person shooter. Its developers are touting the fact that they are aiming to avoid the pitfalls that have befallen some previous first-person shooters for Nintendo's console, which is best known for its party games and host of first-party titles.

"Too many Wii owners have been told that the Wii is a casual platform with no room for serious games or top-tier graphics," High Voltage Chief Creative Officer Eric Nofsinger said in a statement. "With The Conduit, we intend to prove that theory wrong by providing gamers with the kind of title they imagined back when the platform was first announced."

The Conduit is currently slated for release during the first quarter of 2009.

I think EVERYONE should buy this game. Wii, 360, PS3, even PC owners, I mean everyone. Think about it, if this game sells well, then maybe developers will start to take the Wii seriously. When that happens, the 360 and PS3 games are going to get better to prove that they are still superior to the Wii, and then seeing all this improvement in console games, PC games should start to get better as well. Everyone wins, so buy this game!

@ShadowTheHHFan - Define hardcore audience? The two games you describe are violent and aggressive. Is that the sort of game for the hardcore audience? I am hardcore but wouldn't buy games for these features. Does that make me a casual?

You know, I think I should buy The Conduit merely for the fact that High Voltage are out to dispell all the crap about the Wii being for casuals only and has sub standard graphics. Which is most definitely not the case.

Bravo! A developer is finally making an effort to make a decent looking game for the Wii. I hope this sets a precedent for other devs.

This, and Madworld seem to be the only games that are coming out towards the hardcore audience, Hopefully they do good so other companies will make some more hardcoreish games for the Wii. Enough with useless shovel wear like Wii Ski.

I'm going to be cautious about this game because I don't know much about High Voltage... However, it looks impressive from what I've seen. If it really has controls like Metroid Prime 3 and Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, and has graphics that pwn even Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I'm sold. The Wii doesn't have 360/ PS3 capability, obviously, but it has much, much more than people think. Gamecube ran Resident Evil 4. And the Wii can do double that. C'mon Conduit!

Little late to the game there GS? Keeping my fingers crossed that this turns out to be a great game. It's definitely looking better since the first screenshots were released. I love how all the haters complain that Wii has no good quality games, yet when a company actually works hard to make one, all they can do is bash it. Good job, tools! Be glad someone is FINALLY making an effort and it looks good!

Ya saw the new screens a while ago. For a game in its early stage, it looks pretty good. I cant wait to see the finished version. Since they are releasing it Q1 09, Do you think they would include VC if Nintendo reveals it in E3 this year? or maybe even DLC.(if HDD is announced) :D:D Hopefully it will use all that the Quantum engine has when the game is finished. Imm more interested in the gameplay though. Need more info on ONLINE.:D:D ------------------------------ Is this the first time GS posted anything about the Conduit?(havent been paying attention)

The wii can finally be a revolution. No first party game besides Mario galaxy/metroid (barely) were big jumps over gamecube. The motion control didn't add enough but the games were still good. I like it when devs aim high especially early in console life. It helps seperate the cash-in devs vs the real deal. Family guy and liesure suite larry were rated bad but you could tell lots of effort was put in making the game (except brians levels lol)

Wow, GS took mighty long to get up on this game. I'm glad for developers like High Voltage. Lord knows the Wii needs more titles targeted towards the hardcore like this.

Given the developer of the game, I wont be disappointed if this turns out bad. On the other hand, it could be great and a nice escape from the casual games that dominate the Wii. On a side note, while I do think this is one of the better looking games on Wii, I actually thought the tech demo of the game's graphics engine looks better than the game itself, just my opinion though.

the first screens looked like crap a few months ago. Now, the game is beggining to look 'pretty' good. i at least give them credit for trying to break the Wii "casual console" perception. If it turns out good, I might just buy a new Wii. By 2009, Nintendo HAS to have the supply problem under control.

Looks pretty cool, great to finally see a 3rd party Wii exclusive FPS. However, the graphics certainly don't blur the line between the Wii's power and the other next-gen consoles like High Voltage seemed to aim for. But really, that's an unreasonably high goal to set up for themselves, as it is simply impossible to pull off. I think that the closest the Wii has come to matching the other consoles was with Mario Galaxy. What a beautiful game. PS. IGN has posted confirmation of online mode.

At first glance, I thought this is coming out for PC, PS3 or 360. The best looking game on Wii. Period.

This rocks!!! I really hope this turns out well. I'll at least rent it no matter what, but I'm hoping it's worth a purchase. One thing though: They said they wanted to push the graphical boundaries of the Wii. Judging by those screens, they still have a ways to go. I hope they succeed, though!!
