Horizon Forbidden West's Free Upgrade Means You Shouldn't Buy The Standard PS5 Version

Since Sony is offering a free upgrade for PS4 owners, there's no reason to pay the extra $10 for the PS5 version.

Last week, Sony officially opened up preorders for Horizon Forbidden West ahead of the game's release on PS4 and PS5 in February next year. Curiously it was bound to be the first exclusive from Sony without a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade path, forcing you to purchase the $80 Digital Deluxe edition if you needed both. Sony has since reversed that decision, which has inadvertently made the PS5 version of the game a less sensible purchase, especially if you're buying digitally.

Right now, the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West retails for $60, while the PS5 version is listed for $70. This isn't too surprising--all of Sony's exclusives outside of launch titles that are also cross-gen have followed this pattern, including Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut most recently. Unlike those, however, the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade for the PS4 version is going to be free following Sony's announcement over the weekend, making the $10 premium for the base PS5 version a costly option for what it gets you.

In fact, paying $70 outright for the PS5 version might be a worse value proposition too. With the PS4 version of the game and its inherent free upgrade, you are getting Horizon Forbidden West for two consoles. The base PS5 version is only for Sony's new console, so you lose out of that additional platform while also paying $10 more, which makes little sense. If you're buying the physical version, you do get the PS5 case and disc, which might be important to you if you're proud of your physical collection.

It's clear that this is something Sony might address in the coming weeks, since it's a little confusing now to those without context as to why one version is more expensive than the other (especially since the PS4 version on PSN doesn't make the free upgrade option that clear). It could be that Sony is devising a method to compensate for preorders that occurred before its reversal before aligning the prices of both versions.

Either way, take this as a PSA to only preorder the PS4 version if you are planning to before launch, since there's no reason to pay any more than that for the standard edition. I guess it's something Sony anticipated I'm sure. I'm not sure why they went totally free instead of just offering a $10 upgrade plan. Maybe they thought the backlash was too much?

This is a dumb article because you are forced to play the PS5 version digitally with the PS4 disc inserted. Plus, who the heck wants a PS4 case on your shelf in 2022.

@ps5gamer: me, I do. With the PS5 backwards compatibility I'll be holding on to all my physical PS4 games for the foreseeable future. If I can have both the PS4 and PS5 version of the game for the cost of one game I'll take it. Physical is also always better, and will always be superior IMO. (You can share it, sell it, and always own it. In the case of movies the data rate is higher and the movie quality is superior.) In this case the PS5 version will be digital, but you can always play the PS4 version on the PS5.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that there's no reason to purchase the physical PS5 version. Remember when, mere months ago, Sony was trying to shut down digital stores for some of their consoles/handhelds (the PSP store was shut down, by the way)? Yeah, something about putting all of the eggs entirely in the PSN basket seems like a bad long term strategy.

So... don't preorder. Got it.

Meanwhile, get it together, Sony. You have time, but you're doing bad things to the dog right now. Get it sorted.

And this is exactly why they now want to charge 10€ for each upgrade. Unless until everyone has enough PS5s to justify not releasing games in both generations at the same time.

"No reason"

Here are two reasons: I don't play games on my PS4 anymore, since like most people I didn't double-dip or late-adopt and get a Pro and everything is better with HDR, and those games are freakin' huge, so I'd rather not put the entirety of a huge open-world game on my hard drive.

You created an entire article about saving ten bucks. A proper HD costs exponentially more than that

@id0ntkn0w7: But here is the thing:

$60 get you PS5 version and PS4 version of the game.

$70 get you the PS5 version.

Why would you pay $70 for the PS5 version when you can pay $60 for it instead?

@dhracox: Because the $60 version of PS4 + PS5 requires a digital purchase, whereas the $70 version of just the PS5 you can purchase on a disc - thus saving your PS5 hard drive space.

Additionally, you can purchase the disc version for PS5 cheaper on the secondary market, which is currently impossible on the PS4 + PS5 deal. You can also RESELL the PS5 disc version once you are finished with the game.

All PS5 games get copied to the SSD, even if they are on disc, (that's how the load times are so wicked fast). 🙂

@CyberEarth: How does having it on a disc save on storage? You still have to install the whole game to your internal storage to be able to play it.

@dhracox: Well yes, if you are opting for digital, then buy the PS4 version and upgrade to PS5. If you're going disc, then the PS5 version is the proper one (assuming you have a disc-based PS5).

It's an interesting choice, but in the long run I think gamers will opt for the physical media, as the price will drop on physical media quicker than digital. Only day 1 pre-orders will really be affected, but after many of the day 1 debacles lately nothing will make me pre-order a game these days. But I guess we'll see! Sony definitely wants to push digital as they save both on distribution costs as well as eliminate secondary markets.

Except the upgrade is digital, no? So if you want the physical PS5 version you buy the PS5 version. Don't act like there's no reason to have a physical copy.

@Thanatos2k: this is a good point. But who knows if the PS5 discs will even work on the PS6. Seems like Sony didn't even want to do backwards compatibility with the PS4. With the push towards digital (which I'm against) I'd be surprised if the PS6 will even come with a disc option.

@Thanatos2k: Either way you're likely going to need to download a day 1 update to get the game working properly. If you're going to do that you may as well get the ps4 physical version for cheaper and install the upgrade patch imo.

Got to say Microsoft have them on all this cross gen, but on the other side Microsoft are making everything cross gen and are yet to actually release a current gen title

They're probably rushing to get a PS5 "Directors Cut" version together with extra-extra features for PS5 for $10+ more.

So this upgrade is for the optical disc and digital version?

After Dawn Forbidden West all Sony future PS4 titles will require a $10 upgrade for the PS5 version, Sony is probably not going to support PS4 much longer anyway…

No sense to even talk about it as its 6 months away from release. Unless you just need to fuel rage. As I've been burned with preordering shat games lately and this one seems awfully too identical to the first I'll wait for release to consider buying.

PlayStation Dumb Delivery™ continues to baffle

It's as if they're still adjusting to and figuring out how to handle this shocking new concept of digital content purchases... that everyone else grasped just fine ~15 years ago.

@m4a5: Remember how it was way too easy for PS5 owners to download the PS4 versions of games by mistake? (don't know if this has been fixed yet.) Or how transferring save files between PS4 and PS5 can be a tedious multi-step process involving installing both versions of a game (whereas Steam and Xbox cloud save systems make it completely seamless and you barely even have to think about it)?

Looking at the bigger picture, including these other issues, no I don't think Sony knows what they're doing

@Spartan_418: Oh, don't get me wrong, I've been seeing Sony do the bare minimum this generation (getting by on the goodwill they've garnered).

But downloading different versions and transferring save files doesn't exactly earn Sony money. Getting their customers to buy another game version conveniently does.

This upgrade system sony has is the definition of a clusterf'ck, and that's coming from someone who has the system since day one.

But the digital upgrade is a 1-time thing right?

So if you plan on playing & reselling the physical version, which version you buy might be something to consider.

@kintoneo: Is the physical PS5 version going to sell for over $10 more than the physical PS4 version? You are already buying it at a $10 loss, so it is generally harder to recoop your value by buying the more expensive version -- especially when people don't need it.

@TrueLink: The PS5 version will be $10 more than the PS4 version. But say you buy the PS4 version, use the 1-time digital upgrade to play on PS5, then go to resell it. Someone who wants to play it on PS5 cannot play it without also purchasing the $10 upgrade.

Sony is bound to use a loophole to lock 4k textures under a paywall or any PS5 exclusive feature. No way they are going to lose the 10$ extra.

Worst case scenario this just means they will be all the more willing to port it to PC ASAP to recoup the cost, while charging 60 to PC as well, would make a killing for Sony. Then they can spin their PR BS tale about being the smartest decision.
